INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1

(To be submitted on 30/4/2019 after lecture class)

Chapter 1

Q1. A discharge of 16.0 m3/s flows with a depth of 2.0 m in a rectangular channel of
4.0 m wide. Determine the state of flow based on :-

(a) Froude number.

(b) Reynolds number.

Chapter 2

Q2. (a) Prove that the most efficient cross section for triangular channel is half
of a square.

(b) A concrete-lined irrigation channel with Manning's n = 0.020 is needed

to convey 12.5 m3/s of flow. The channel has a trapezoidal section
with bottom slope So = 0.0015. Determine the most effective size of the
channel if the side slope is restricted to 3(horizontal) : 1(vertical).

Chapter 3

Q3. An 8-m wide rectangular channel is conveying flow uniformly at a rate of

18.6 m3/s and depth of 1.2 m. A temporary short span bridge is to be built across
the channel in which bridge embankment is needed at both sides of the channel
causing the channel to be constricted under the proposed bridge :-

(a) Calculate the maximum channel width under the proposed bridge which
will not cause backwater upstream.

(b) If the channel width under the proposed bridge is 4 m due to the
unavoidable condition, calculate the expected flow depth under the bridge,
at just upstream and just downstream of the bridge.

(c) If the flow depth just upstream of the proposed bridge is to be limited to
0.2 m higher than the normal depth, calculate the channel width under the
bridge.
INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2

(To be submitted on 21/5/2019 after lecture class)

Chapter 4

Q1 A river 6 m wide conveys flow at a normal depth 2.0 m along a slope of 0.0002
and n = 0.035, upstream of a water fall. The flow reduces to a depth of 1.9 m just
before the fall. Taking N = 3 steps, determine :-

(a) Type of flow profile.

(b) Length of gradually-varied flow profile produced based on the

method of numerical integration.

(c) Sketch of the flow profile.

Chapter 5

Q2. A 1.5 m wide sluice gate with an opening of 10 cm is discharging water at a

rate of 3 m/s. Calculate the discharge if the depth of flow behind the sluice
gate is 3 m and the downstream depth is 2 m. Use coefficient of discharge
Cd = 0.585.

Chapter 6

Q3. (a) A centrifugal pump has an impeller of 200 mm with capacity 400 L/s at
speed 1200 rpm against a head of 12 m. Calculate the speed and
head of a geometrically similar pump with impeller diameter of 300
mm which is required to deliver 700 L/s.

(b) A turbine is to operate under a head of 28 m at 185 rpm. The discharge is

10 m3/s. If the efficiency is 87%, determine the performance (N, Q, P) of
the turbine under a head of 20 m.
