CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH

This chapter presents and discusses the introduction of the

study, its background and its important contributions to the

beneficiaries of the study.

Introduction

Classroom Management is part of the various roles played by a

teacher because it determines teaching

success. It requires wide variety of skills and techniques that the

teachers must apply to keep students organized, orderly, focused,

attentive, and academically productive during a class. Part of the

Classroom Management are the classroom rules and regulation which

is a crucial component, allowing teachers to be more successful in

the handling the class in a classroom. Classroom rules and regulations

set boundaries and provide distinct boundaries in the behavior of the

students. Classroom management using rules and regulations set

limits and informs students on how far they can push and develop and

ii
what will be tolerated in the classroom and it is challenging aspect for

the teachers.

The implementation classroom rules and regulations helps in

developing effective classroom management. Effective use

of classroom management techniques can dramatically decrease the

disruption in the class. Students in the class where there are

implemented and existing rules and regulations were might have less

disruptive behavior than those students in the class without existing

rules and regulations. Technically, students in classes where effective

classroom management were employed achieves higher and performs

better than those students in class without existing classroom rules.

The reasons that we considered in choosing this topic are: (1) to know

if there are possibilities in improving existing classroom rules and

regulations being implemented by members of the faculty in Bestlink

College of the Philippines, (2) to successfully engage with selected

students during lecture periods by making observation in a classroom,

by asking several questions related to the research and by assessing

the employed verbal and non-verbal teaching methods that has impact

on the focus of students, and lastly, (3) to establish suggestion towards

an sustainable orderly environment in the classroom. The purpose of

this study is to provide recommendation on how can the members of

the faculty, and the class officers improve existing rules and

regulations towards a better, applicable, and effective way

of classroom management. This study also aims to provide

suggestions towards the development of cooperation and better

relationship between teachers and students.

Background of the Study

Students are the stakeholders in the academic field and the

most essential resources in education. It is absolutely necessary to

direct students to exhibit acceptable attitude and behaviour within and

outside the school. In an attempt to achieve an organized and

peaceful school environment.

The problem of indiscipline in schools is a global issue of great

concern, traversing political, economic, geographical, racial and even

gender boundaries. There is a growing concern regarding indiscipline

in schools within the United Arab Emirates where teaching methods

were blamed for the children’s indiscipline.

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter presented the related local and foreign literature

and studies, the conceptual framework, theoretical framework and the

synthesis of the related review of literature and studies.

Local Literature

“Teachers must learn the specific behaviors that more likely

optimize the available instructional time and reduce time and energy

wasted with student’s misbehavior.” (Lopes, 2017). This statement

states that teachers should learn his/her behavior on how to manage if

the students are seeing misbehavior.

“Effective teaching and learning process is directly or indirectly

influence by organized classroom management.” “The classroom

management is crucial in the teaching and learning process in the

classroom”. Salary increase for the teachers and other form of

motivations are highly recommended.” (Mastul, 2017). These

statements state that to promote classroom management is the very

hard doing of a teacher because it follows the different process to

achieve this goal. And also it states that the teachers salary should be

increase so that they are motivated to do their task or job.

“The teacher’s skill's at instructional design and delivery” and

The teacher’s skill in classroom management.” (Marzano, 2017).

These statements state that every teacher should have the skills on

how the classroom to become more manageable and become

productive. They should have the skills on how to handle different

attitude. Every teacher should be expert on different ways for

example. The students are noisy or they are not indiscipline the

teachers should do something to become his/her student to become

discipline student because they can influence every student to have

their goals. The teachers should motivate or take initiative to become

the foundation of the students.

ii
Foreign Literature

Innovative methods for transforming common classroom

management struggles into opportunities for positive change and for

changing negative behavior into positive interactions are explained”,

“Classroom climate, expectation, motivation, and methods for

constructive reflection or mistakes are investigated to support teachers

in developing a positive learning environment” and “Difficulty managing

classroom behavior is a frequently recognized problem for teachers

especially teachers early in their careers.” Sieberer – nagler

(2015) Having an organize a classroom may encourage the students to

do well and to have a participation it may change their behavior

because they are all know that there are a rule and regulation to

follow. Everyone should discipline theirselves I order for them to have

better interactions in each other inside the room if your room is not

manage then it can cause a conflict and few of the students will be

affected.

The classroom management helps the students and teachers to

develop the learnings of the students. The teachers help the students t

o be motivated by giving them an advice so that the students can

appreciate the things they do inside the classroom. In different

classroom management they faced different problems especially the

ii
teachers because their students are different to each other especially

the new teachers because they don’t have any experienced in this kind

of problem so that is hard for them to organize the class.

“Sources such as classroom management as textbooks are

practitioners-oriented journal, articles recommended a number of

characteristics that make classroom rules and regulations effective,

unfortunately, these sources have not been uniform in

their recommendations. ”Results indicated that the two most important

characteristics of effective classroom rules and regulations by teaching

the rules to students and tying rules to positive or negative

consequences” . Alter and Haydon (2017) To have a better classroom

management, each school have a textbook or journal that related to

the study they do, and also it is advisable that all schools have a

uniform so that it will become organized. Every school should have the

rules so that the school will become organize and manageable or

orderly school that rules and regulations have positive or negative

outcome.

“Evidence based classroom management

practices include active instruction and supervision of students

opportunities for students to respond and feedback to students.”

(Gage, 2017). Evidence based classroom management practices

include active listening and improves observation of the students right

to express their opinion about the lesson that being discuss and

reflection of the students on the classroom.

Local Studies

“The teachers hold a fundamental and greatest task of teaching

good values and sufficient knowledge of transforming every learner to

become educationally inclined and globally.” (Millapre, 2015).

Teacher’s goal is to become an educational student every meeting and

have a knowledge and good vibes.

“Teachers play a major role for effective classroom conduction”,

“The problem is normally related to students behavior and discipline”,

and “Many students today just don’t value their education.” (Chandria,

2015). The statements state that the teachers have the responsibility to

make his/her students to become organized, modern and productive.

The classroom will become manageable or organize if they will have

cooperative and they can grow in different ways. As they go further,

they will become productive because they can learn and they can

succeed together. They can express their thoughts, feeling or emotion

in everybody because they have trust in their classmates or

teachers. They will become discipline students because they are

controllable by the teachers and they have student – Teacher

relationship. They can be successful in terms of academic purposes

that establishing students self – control to promote positive student

achievement and behavior. Some students don’t value their education

because they lack of self-confidence or self-esteem and they are

influence by their friends to do nothing. If they will have a better

classroom management, they will be instruction by the teacher to have

their goals and they can be successful someday.

“To investigate the relationship between the efficacies of

the students of English as a foreign language. Their self- reported

practice of communicative language teachings and to examine the

impact of an in-service teacher education program on teacher’s

efficacy and self- reported and actual practice of CLT.” (Akyel, 2015).

These statements state that this study wants to observe the impact of

having service teacher education program on teachers efficacy and

actual practice of Communicative Language Teaching. The finding

state that after the in service education program, the teachers was

being more efficacious and improved their practice of Communicative

Language Teaching.

“Classroom Management is often a big concern for beginning

teachers. Beginning teachers often worry about how will uphold the

same level of classroom management as veteran teachers. Classroom

management strategies for beginning teachers will be discussed

including equipment protocols, classroom procedure, routines and how

to deal with inappropriate behaviors.” (Dan Grube, 2018) Being the

beginner in teaching is harder to have classroom management that’s

why they implement classroom management strategies to make the

students more productive and engage in learning experiences.

“This paper described a structured attempt to integrate the

flipped classroom model into a senior level course at the higher

education level. The purpose of this study is to examine and compare

the impact of flipped classroom versus non- flipped as a means to

contribute to the growing line of research on flipped teaching through

an evaluation of both methods academic outcomes, along

with students’ perceptions for their learning experience. Adopting

action research principles, this study use student grades, weekly e-

journal entries, guided final journal entries and focus group

interviewers as data collection tools.” (Adnan, 2017) .

their learning experience. They are using students grades, week e

journal entries, guided final journal entries and focus group interviews

as data or survey.

“This descriptive phenomenological study explored students’

experiences of flipping the classroom in two medical/ surgical courses.

Flipping the classroom is in contrast to a traditional class where lecture

is given in class and assignments are sent as homework. A lecture is

sent as homework and class time is devoted to active learning

assignment.” (Post, 2015). Nursing educator implement flipped based

classroom in surgical and medical faculty where the lecture is sent as

homework and the class hours is focused on active learning

that makes the lecture available to students outside of the classroom

and class time is innovative in learning activity.

Theoretical Framework

Glasser's Choice Theory (Glasser, W., 1998)

This theory states that all we do is behave. Glasser’s suggests

that almost all behavior is chosen, and we are driven by genetics to

satisfy five basic needs: love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun.

In choice theory, the important need is love and belonging because

connectedness with other is required as a basis in satisfying all other

needs. The classroom should therefore be a needs satisfying place for

students. Glasser's work imparts learning theory in a variety of ways.

It has been utilized in schools across the globe and has changed the

ways that teachers deliver instruction.

Synthesis

Based on the Local Literature written by Lopes, J.

& et al.(2017), Mastul, A.R. (2017), and Marzano, R. & et al. (2017),

they agreed that teachers has big role in implementing techniques on

classroom management as it is part of managing the students inside

the classroom. The salaries of the teachers should be increased

because they can make the classroom become organize and

manageable.

Based on the Foreign Literature written by Millapre,

M.(2015), Chandria, R.(2015) and Akyel, S.(2015), they agreed that

to have good classroom management, schools should have good

facilities so that students can gain more knowledge. Having a

conducive classrooms, together with an effective classroom

management makes the students motivated.

Based on the Local Studies written by Millapre, M.(2015),

Chandria, R.(2015), and Akyel, S.(2015), they agreed that teachers

have the biggest responsibility to make the classroom manageable.

Students should have trust to their teacher so that they can be

comfortable to each other.

COMMENT: if Millapre, Chandria, and Akyel are Local Writers with

Local Articles, how come their study were considered as Foreign

Studies?

Based on the Foreign Studies written by Dan Grube, & et

al.(2018), Adnan, M.( 2017), and Post, J.(2015), they agreed that

beginner teachers should need to have more patience as they

implement their techniques in classroom management. Beginner

teachers should have strategies on how he/she can make her students

become organized and manageable.
