of their assigned political organization.

POLITICAL ORGANIZATIONS
1. BAND is typically formed by several families living together based on marriage
ties, common descendants, friendship, affiliations and members usually have
a common interest or enemy. The main source of integration is kinship by
blood or affinity. The political structural of bands are less hierarchal because
family members are seen to be equal.
2. TRIBE is a band that have increased its population, survived fission and social
velocity, and adopted multiple forms of livelihood. It is often headed by a
village headman but with no absolute power. He derives his authority from
having senior position, coupled with an ability to force others to obey him.
3. CHIEFDOM is defined as a political organization that is more defined. It has a
formal leadership and authority rests solely on the members of a selected
family. It is composed of a number of communities that is ruled by a
permanent paramount chief coming from the elite family. Social classes exist
and are differentiated according to the level of their power in relation to the
permanent ruler.
4. NATION is a cultural and identity-based term. It has no exact territory but
members share the same culture, values and practices with each other.
5. STATE refers to a political organization bounded by a territory, and headed
by a government. The government is headed by people voted by the citizens
or can also be hierarchal for those that are led by a royal family.

PROCESS QUESITON:
1. How do the political leaders exercise its power?
When talking about power, we tend to be confused between authority and legitimacy.
Both are vital aspects in leading a society. Authority is the power to make binding
decisions and issue commands. Legitimacy is a moral and ethical concept that bestows
on who possesses power the right to exercise such power since such is perceived to be
justified and proper. Thus, for authority to be binding and stable, it must be legitimate.

PROCESS QUESTION:
1. Why do other political organizations fail in leading its people?

PRACTICE:
I. Enumerate the 5 Political organizations and explain each.
II. How are Authority and Legitimacy related to one another?

ENRICHMENT:
With the same groups, let the learners identify and portray the differences and
similarities of each political organization.

EVALUATION:
1. Do the political leaders in our country exercise its authority legitimately? Why do
you say so?
2. Is our political organization today effective? Why or why not?
