PERSONAL STATEMENT

As a child, I had a strong desire for discovering the reasons/principles behind why and how things worked and operated. From
decoupling toys and household items sometimes beyond repair to fixing a radio set at an early age of 7, an interest in
Engineering was developed. I gradually developed an interest in Petroleum Engineering due to the challenges my country
faced in its efficient exploration, production, distribution and utilization of its petroleum resources. I had a strong desire to
contribute lasting solutions to these challenges because I believe that a person has not truly lived until he contributes something
to this world and proffer solutions to ageless challenges. My decision to study Petroleum Engineering for my undergraduate
degree stemmed from my drive to solve the challenges.
During my undergraduate at Covenant University, I was groomed in a lot of courses such as production engineering, mass and
heat transfer, numerical methods, drilling engineering, fluid mechanics, reservoir engineering, process design and computer
modelling which heighted my exposure to technical knowledge and equipped me with the skills I needed in order to begin
my quest. Through the five (5) year period of my undergraduate program, I gradually gained vital knowledge about the oil and
gas industry both in my country and the world. I then observed that my interest in courses like fluid mechanics, reservoir
engineering, production engineering, numerical methods and computer modelling were higher than the others which caused
a positive impact on my academic performance and then deepened my understanding and passion for Process Systems
Engineering.
In the five (5) year period I was doing my undergraduate program, I had internship opportunities at both private and
government owned oil and gas companies such as Mobil Oil Nigeria (now 11plc), the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC) and Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) where the challenges in production,
distribution and utilization were experienced first-hand. My exposure to the technical knowledge of mathematical modeling,
process design, production engineering and fluid mechanics enabled me proffer lasting solutions along with process and
chemical engineers, to the production, distribution and utilization challenges the companies were facing.
Although I was able to satiate a bit of my drive to solve the challenges faced in the oil and gas industry in a few companies in
my country, a higher drive still remains to solve the challenges on a national scale. Working alongside process engineers who
were in charge of designing and optimizing complex production processes, fluid transfer processes, biological and chemical
processes and an efficient automation of those processes made me understand that studying Process Systems Engineering
would equip me with the knowledge, skills, resources and mindset needed for me to be able to accomplish my life long goal.
After carrying out a lot of research on various schools around the world, I have decided that University of Regina in Canada
is the best choice for a Masters in Process Systems Engineering. The courses offered by the schools’ department of engineering
in advanced reaction engineering, advanced mass and heat transfer and its research area in fossil fuels processing and refining,
alternate energy production and waste treatment piqued my interest and I hope to be able to gain a lot of knowledge in these
research areas as well as make valuable contributions to it.
