INTRODUCTION & UNITED NATIONS
As per United Nations Climate Neutral Now guidelines, we are integrating sustainable practices
and renewable energy technologies for carbon neutrality in a marriage reception.

“Climate Neutral Now is an initiative launched by UN Climate Change in 2015 to encourage

everyone in society to take action to help achieve a climate neutral world by mid-century, as
enshrined in the Paris Agreement.

To avoid the worst effects of climate change, science tells us that we must limit global
temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial
levels, which is also the central goal of the Paris Agreement. To achieve this objective, relying
solely on governmental action will not be sufficient. We all have a role to play.”

CARBON NEUTRAL EVENT

Events are an integral part of human life: we gather to connect with each other, to celebrate
achievements or to share ideas. Similarly, to any other human activity, events entail a significant
climate footprint.

Organizers can achieve the carbon neutrality of their event(s) by following these three simple
steps:

a. Measure the event's greenhouse gas emissions

b. Reduce these emissions as much as possible by taking adequate measures,

c. Compensate the emissions that are unavoidable, by using United Nations Certified
Emissions Reductions (CERs).

EVENT SUMMARY
The marriage function is a four-day event organized at Balasore, Odisha. The groom is Saswat
Sourav Panda, who is a solar industry professional with infrastructure, energy management and
engineering degree. The groom side residence and the reception is planned to be 100% carbon
neutral or near carbon neutral. Location is at Balasore Odisha.
OUR FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
All the activites are designed with the following principles:

1. Carbon Reduction alternatives usage

2. Sustainable project deployment
a. Financially viable
b. Technologically Feasible
c. Socially Acceptable
3. Deployment in rural and emergency situations
4. Socio-Economic Development of the region

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN
The marriage reception event is planned to be carbon neutral. We have identified the carbon
emission areas and have tried to address the carbon emissions.

All the activities are being managed by professions of solar photovoltaics, solar thermal and
solar cooking experts and green building experts.

Odisha state solar companies and Govt body, will inspect the projects and share their technical
reports with observations and findings.

All these activities follow our four fundamental principles and will give the society a diversified
display of technological adaptation in daily life activities such as marriage reception.
IMPACT OF EVENT: UN GUIDELINES
As per UN guidelines, we have kept community, environment and economics as priority in the
marriage reception.

Environmental co-benefits include:

Air: Improved air quality
Fossil fuel vehicles are parked at a far distance to keep the venue area air clean. Guest will
travel by electric car and electric cycle.

We are not using coal power or diesel generator.

We are using bio energy based fire wood and solar electricity compatible induction cooking
system for cooking.

Land: Improved soil quality or avoided pollution

For the reception, we are making the land clear of weeds, shrubs and bushes. These are
converted into manure by decomposing using Lactobacillus, Yeast and Photosynthetic
microbes.

Food waste from the reception and the four days of event will be put into composting pit
for manure making.

Water: Improved water quality or access

Collection of dew water for drinking purpose and use of coconut water as a source of
drinking water. 15 Coconut plants will be planted.
Spare Solar Water pump will be used at a few farm for irrigation and for house
construction of any needs person.

Natural resources: Depletable natural resources protection or enhancement

Coal and fossil fuels are natural resources which are to be protected. Odisha is one of the
major coal producing state and by going for solar electricity and solar cooking we are
conserving natural resources and enhancing renewable energy adoption.
Social co-benefits include:
Education: Education, research, awareness raising or distribution of information
The event will be attended by various guests which includes majorly villagers, farmers,
tribal community, Odisha solar industry professionals, politicians, business professionals,
technology students, doctors, bureaucrats, media and Governmentt Officials.

With direct ways (physical presence at event) and indirect ways (mount to mount publicity
& mass media) we will reach to more than tens of thousands of citizens creating
awareness. Our Odisha Solar Alliance members will be putting up stalls and will be
deploying volunteers to ensure all the guests of marriage get educated about solar
applications.

The event will be aired by the nation radio channel, Akashvani which is still the largest
mass media communication system of India.

Guest Lectures will be delivered to the students and faculties of an engineering collage.

Health and safety: Improved health and safety

The event is in the house of a doctor. Some of the guests with alignment will be given free
medical treatment and medicines. All guests will be asked to wash hands with hand was
liquids and be briefed on hygienic food eating practices.

Villagers will be demonstrated on how to use snake repellants and avoid mosquito larva
growth.

The guests will be given a basic safety & preventive maintenance on electrical appliances,
solar and lead acid battery.

Jobs: Job or income generation

All the activities of marriage such as coloring of house, labor, tent & decoration, battery
rental, vehicle rental, cooking staff, marriage reception necessities, vegetables & grocery,
and flowers etc. will be executed by the local community only ensuring expenditure of
almost 90% of marriage budget in the local community. 30-40 village youths will be
employed by our family, and will account for payment equivalent to their one-month
average income from conventional sources.
Two entrepreneurs are being funded by our family and a and supported by a solar
company to start solar products sales business in the locality.

Five engineering volunteers will be working on the project which will enhance their
experience and exposure leading to direct recruitment by the visiting solar companies.

We live in urban metropolitan cities, by organizing a marriage event at our ancestral house
which is at a remote location improves the morale of the rural community.

Odisha economy is dependent on tourism. By arranging a national level solar event at

Odisha, we are inviting all our family, friends and guests from across the country which
helps in promotion of our state as a tourist destination and possibility of carbon neutral
events venue. Also, this event is a gathering of the solar community of Odisha to formulate
the Odisha Solar Alliance.

Economic co-benefits include:

Energy: Improved energy availability or access
Grid Failure and power quality is a common issue at the area. Also, Diesel Generator is
unreliable due to failure rates, makes uncomfortable sound and creates air pollution.

Solar panels of 7 kWp will be used to charge lead acid and lithium ion batteries.

Solar lights of various sizes will be used for additional lighting.

Solar Pump will be used for water pumping.

Solar cooker increases our energy access for cooking.

We will also model the event and location for carbon neutral events of individuals,
corporate and government.

Growth: Support to economic development or stability

Many Solar products which are received as donation, once used at the event will be
donated to villagers. One solar entrepreneur is identified and we will get a few youths into
solar products repairing and maintenance. We are helping two UN partner solar product
manufacturing company to identify and support self-employment aspects in solar.
Balance of payments: Improvement of the country's trade balance
Impact Assessment not feasible.

Technology: Technology transfer or diffusion

We are testing five new technologies and various ad hoc engineering practices. All the
clean technologies which are feasible in the remote location are demonstrated. The
project report with details of technology, design, engineering and outcomes will be shared
with all the respective stakeholders.
