 Ú ʺ , Freyssinet has signed
another significant contract in Newfoundland. Freyssinet has won the
contract to supply and install the prestressing for the Hebron GBS
(Gravity Based Structure) on behalf of oil company Exxon. This imposing
concrete structure, designed to store barrels of crude oil, will be placed
in the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 90 metres, 350 km off the Canadian
coast. The structure is made up of 130,000 m3 of concrete and will be
reinforced with around 3,000 tonnes of prestressing to ensure that it is
watertight and iceberg resistant.

The essentials
Ú×ÔäáàÙÔå
— The project: A 130 m-diameter
gravity base with seven storage
compartments, surrounded
by seven ice walls to protect
against icebergs.
— General contractor:
Kiewit-Kværner Contractors
— Implementation: Supply
and installation of 3,000 tonnes
of offshore prestressing, with
ducts laid during the slipforming
of the structure. The operations
take place in the dry dock and
then offshore when the platform
is floated.

(Freyssinet Inc. and Freyssinet Major Projects) worked
as the general contractor on the construction of a
suspended footbridge - the «CONSOL Energy Wing Tip

footbridge spans a nature reserve within the New River
Gorge national park, which played host in July 2013
to the National Scout Jamboree (held by the Boy Scouts
of America and featuring 50,000 people).

The essentials

— The project: a
suspended footbridge
approximately 30 metres

— Objective: to reduce
the time required to cross
the valley from 45 minutes

— Implementation: the
carrier tendons were fitted
using a travelling carriage
system along a temporary
cable made of strands,
allowing the locked-coil
cables to be supported and
moved above the valley.
A cableway was used to fit
the segments.

BUCHAREST
CITY HALL
Ø
  Ô Õ Ú, which was
built over 100 years ago. Isolating the structure
from its foundations is often the best solution for
protecting historical buildings in high earthquake
risk areas like Romania. The isolation devices were
successfully tested at the University of San Diego
and comply with new European Standard
EN 15129 on anti-seismic devices.

The essentials
ÔçÕÚÓä×åæÕÛæëÚÓÞÞ
— The project: protecting
a very old building against
earthquake risk.
— Implementation:
Freyssinet has installed
a total of 262 isolators.
Each device is over 1 m in
diameter and 58 cm tall, and
weighs more than 2 tonnes.
The team is also carrying out
the loading and load transfer
using flat jacks.
— Duration: the project
is scheduled for completion
at the end of 2013, after two
years of work.

ANZAC
BRIDGE

commissioned in 1995, holds the country’s
record for the longest cable-stayed bridge,
with a span of 345 m. Freyssinet won the
contract to solve the bridge’s structural
problems, namely abnormal stay cable
vibration due to wind and rain, the risk of
profound damage linked to the increas
e in the number of lanes on the structure
over the years, and fire protection of the
retaining cables.

The essentials
ÓàìÓÕÔäÛÖÙ×
— The project: repairing
and strengthening the
structure, which had
shown failings since it
was opened to traffic, and
solving a complex vibration 16
phenomenon.
— Implementation:

— Duration: approximately
three years; throughout the
work, the bridge’s eight lanes
remained open to traffic.

HAMMERSMITH
BRIDGE
Ó ˃ Þ, this road bridge
carries the A4 over the Hammersmith Roundabout. Following the
detection of a significant corrosion problem, the bridge was closed
to traffic in December 2011 and then partly reopened. After a short
design phase, Freyssinet carried out the emergency strengthening
work in record time ready for the bridge to be completely
reopened before the London 2012 Olympics.

The essentials
ÚÓßß×äåßÛæÚÔäÛÖÙ×
— The project: repairing
one of the oldest reinforced
concrete flyovers in
existence (completed
in 1961) at a strategic
London traffic point.
— Implementation:
additional prestressing
by post-tensioning was
installed above and below
the upper block.
— Duration: an intensive
schedule was put in place
to complete the work in time
for the London Olympics.
The project started at the
end of January 2012 and was
finished in May 2012, well
before the deadline set.
A second phase of work
took place in 2013.

PANNECIERE
DAM
ÓťŧŢ

ŪŢ , the Pannecière Dam is
one of a number of basins and reservoirs upstream
of the greater Paris region. It provides flood risk
protection in a densely populated area. The structure
also houses a hydrœlectric plant, and required
general strengthening, particularly to bring it into
compliance with new earthquake regulations.
Freyssinet has carried out several different types
of work in conjunction with other VINCI Group
companies, using its Foreva® repair solutions.

The essentials
âÓàà×ÕÛ×ä×ÖÓß
— The project: repairing
the structure, which no
longer complied with
standards and needed to
be strengthened in order to
meet the new earthquake
regulations.
— Implementation:
Freyssinet stabilised
and strengthened the
arches, installed braces
for earthquake protection,
decontaminated the
asbestos-containing facings
(MTS) and repaired the
structure’s concrete using
Foreva® solutions.
— Duration: the work
took 18 months and was
completed in early 2013.

the invention
The year of prestressing.

1928
Prestressing is patented
Eugène Freyssinet filed the patent for prestressing,
using the term «permanent pre-compression of
concrete». The patent is a turning point in the life
of the engineer, who decides to devote himself entirely
to research into prestressing so that it can become
an industrial reality.

was awarded to the Nuvia Travaux Spéciaux/CBN
consortium by the CIPN (French Nuclear Engineering
Centre) in October 2011 in response to French
Nuclear Safety Authority requirements. One of
the challenges of the project has been completing
the work on Unit 1 before 31/12/2013, failing
which the production unit could not continue
to operate beyond that date.
The structure, which is at the heart of the nuclear
island, rests on around twenty micropiles extending
to a depth of 25 metres, nestled between several
underground tunnels and installed in a tight space
on the surface by Soletanche Bachy. The foundations
are concentrated in a corner of the building and along
one façade, and support shear walls and deep beams
(with a 12 metre span). The 20-metre high steel
frame rests on the concrete structures and

  ţť – In early
2012, the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque
authority awarded a consortium of companies
a contract for port development work. Under
the contract, Menard is responsible for
strengthening the soil beneath the underwater
embankments at depths of up to 30 m, using
both land and marine treatment equipment.
The aim is to stabilise sandy, silty soil, which
is susceptible to liquefaction in the event of an
earthquake. To consolidate this heterogeneous
area, Menard has combined two techniques,
using vibroflotation for the sandy materials and
ballasted columns for the silty materials. 22
