First-Ever Exhibition of Abstract Artist Dorle

Lindner To Be Held In Singapore

Singapore, 13 November 2019 – 25 Paintings of a German-born abstract artist Dorle Lindner,

some of whose earlier works had drawn the attention of Pablo Picasso, will be exhibited for the
first time in Singapore at Miaja Gallery.

The exhibition is the culmination of a series of serendipitous events that had led the young Dorle
to New York in 1966, a chance encounter there with a famous photographer who brought her
works to the attention of the Spanish master and – more than half a century later – the ‘discovery’
of her artistic genius in the unlikely setting of her son’s home in Singapore.

While Magic Worlds of Fantasy – a book on abstract works which featured her among four artists
– was published in 1978, Dorle has remained virtually unknown until now. The mysterious hand of
destiny which had shaped her life journey prompted a decision of her two sons Nicholas and Nelson
to curate up to 100 known works of their mother, and to hold this first-ever exhibition.

The exhibition will be open to the public 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on 22 November (Friday). Artworks
to be shown will include oils on canvas, scraperboard pieces (similar to those shown to Picasso),
mixed media (oil with gold leaf and sand).

About Dorle Lindner

Born in 1942 in war-time Berlin, Dorle Lindner is an artistic genius who has long been fascinated
by spirituality and fantasy. Her artistic quest is to peel away the layers of external reality abstract’s
‘core of the matter’, the elusive truth beneath the veneer of everyday life. She abandoned a fine
art education and fled to New York without her father’s consent. There she met David Douglas
Duncan, a photographer who knew Pablo Picasso well, and immediately recognised the conceptual
and intellectual similarities between the Spanish master and her.

“I was asked by the young mail clerk of my hotel (Dorle) whether I was the photographer who made
a book called Picasso’s Picassos and if I would please look at her portfolio… I later showed Picasso
the pictures, which had been given to me. Upon handing them back he looked up with those
unblinking eyes, and nodded. ‘She has her own world, too’.”, Duncan wrote in Magic Worlds of
Fantasy.

Dorle was highly inspired by Picasso, Kandinsky, Miro, Monet and Chagall. While painting, she
draws inspiration from them as she combines pain and euphoria, often diving deep into feelings.
Her paintings range in size from 1.0 metre x 1.5 metre to as large as 3.0 metres x 2.0 metres. Dorle
uses a variety of mediums, such as oil, scraperboard, and chalk pastels. She recently combined oil
painting with gold leaf and sands of different colour sand. She found various effects from using
different mediums fascinating and encapsulating.

Today, Dorle lives in a small village in England, where she continues to paint with gusto and relish.
Most of her original paintings gifted to David Douglas Duncan are now stored in University of
Humanities at Austin, Texas.

Despite much persuasion Dorle had refused to exhibit her artwork until now. Instead, her paintings
were gifted to friends, family, universities and galleries. To read about how and why some of her
works ended up being exhibited the first time, visit www.lindnerart.com.
