Abstract
Write abstract in 150 – 250 words. Abstract is not indented. Align text in justified.
State the rationale/purpose of the paper. State the main thesis statement of the paper
as well as the highlight of the arguments and evidences cited in the entirety of the
paper. State the implications suggested by the paper. State the conclusion and future
direction of the topic.
Introduction
For the first paragraph of the introduction, start by narrating a general premise or an
existing or past condition or event about the chosen topic. This start of an introduction is ideal
in catching first the reader’s attention by narrating an event or condition that would lead to the
main thesis statement at the end of the introduction (3rd paragraph).
For the second paragraph, discuss what is lacking/problematic/dissatisfying in the
existing or past condition or event (general premise) you narrated in the first paragraph.
Explain the main issue or issues related to the topic that would lead to the main thesis
statement in the next paragraph.
For the third and last paragraph of the introduction, state the main thesis statement or
main argument to set the tone and direction of the whole paper. This can be done by first stating
the claim and the substantial reason for it. Explain what you really mean in the thesis statement.
This explanation of what the thesis meant may take 2 to 3 sentences. Then, explain why this
topic is significant to discuss. This shall signal the end of the introduction and the start of the
body of the paper. Avoid oversimplification of ideas in any part of the paper.
Write here the title of the first theme/evidence
For the first paragraph, start each theme by narrating a specific premise. The premise is
the existing or past condition or event related to the theme or evidence you will cite. For
example, if the main thesis statement is “Drug addiction should be decriminalized in the
Philippines as it is a case of mental disorder rather than a criminal act”, the first theme could be
“Link between drug problem and mental health in the Philippines” and its premise is narrating
present drug-related mental health conditions in the Philippines.
For the second paragraph, state an argument about the theme by writing a claim followed
by reason. For example, if the premise narrates drug-related mental health conditions in the
Philippines, one claim could be “Drug addiction is caused by psychological disorder since its
used is triggered by cognitive and emotional dysfunctions like depression.” Explain what is
meant by the claim. Then, cite evidences that would prove the claim. Carefully explain and
point out how these evidences establish your claim.
For the third and last paragraph, discuss the possible implications of the claim made
about the theme/evidence. Implications are possible effects or results of the assertion that you
have made in the claim. In relation the sample claim made, an example of a preliminary part of
the implication would be, “Since cognitive and emotional dysfunctions seemingly induce drug
addiction, rehabilitation and counseling through mental health intervention is needed rather
than criminal punishment.” This example tries to make inference on what would be the effect to
the drug problem in the Philippines if the claim that drug addiction is caused by a psychological
disorder would be accepted.
Add new sections or themes if there are other evidences to be discussed
In case of another evidence to be presented, repeat guidelines in writing the theme as the
body of your argumentative paper.
Conclusion
Summarize the relevant points of the paper. Then, make synthesis or state what idea can
be drawn if you will try to make connection on all of the claims and implications you have
made. Lastly, state what else can be explored in your chosen topic as the future direction of the
paper.
