Average Housing Costs in Canada

Canada has some of the cheapest housing in the developed world. The country has huge forests and
timber is readily available as a building material. Houses in Canada are typically timber-framed
and, because of climate extremes, the housing stock is usually high quality and well insulated.

Province City Average House Price

British Columbia Vancouver $10,08,000
Ontario Toronto $7,10,000
Alberta Calgary $4,69,000
Ontario Ottawa $3,74,000
Quebec Montreal $3,49,000
Saskatchewan Regina $3,15,000
Nova Scotia Halifax $2,93,000
New Brunswick Frediricton $1,82,000

Canadian housing is cheap compared with other developed nations – the average house price in
Canada is around seven times the average annual wage. Prices are highest in Ontario and Alberta
(six to seven times the average wage) and Vancouver (eleven times the average wage). People
moving to Canada with the proceeds of house sales from countries with more expensive housing
can often buy a house in Canada with a considerably reduced mortgage.

This leaves more of their income for other activities and significantly lowers their cost of living.

Average Monthly Household Expenses in CAD$

Cost of living in Canada is 175.61% higher than in India (aggregate data for all cities, rent is not
taken into account). Rent in Canada is 428.61% higher than in India (average data for all cities).

Indians in Canada:

The Indian community in Canada has a fascinating history spanning more than a century. Starting
with just a few immigrants landing ashore in Vancouver, British Columbia, Indo-Canadians now
comprise one of Canada’s largest and most well-integrated immigrant communities.

Tens of thousands more come to the country to visit, work, or study. In 2016 alone, 1,60,600
Indians were issued permanent resident visas. 14,000 students arrived in the country, and a full
130,000 came to Canada as visitors. Canadians of Indian descent can be found in every city and
province in the country. The largest populations, however, are concentrated in Ontario and British
Columbia.

Toronto alone is home to almost 600,000 Indo-Canadians. Indo-Canadians are the third largest non-
European immigrant group in the country, after residents of Chinese and Filipino descent. It is also
one of Canada’s most prominent and well-integrated communities. Indo-Canadians are well
represented in all areas of Canadian society. From politics to sports, and everywhere in between,
Canadians of Indian descent have been integral to shaping the face of Canada to the world.
