1.2 Functions

Measuring function
This function can measure voltage (rms value, mean-value or DC) and its peak value,
current (rms value, mean-value or DC) and its peak value, and active power.
Voltage range : 30V, 60V, 100V, 200V, 400V and 600V
Current range : 0.5A, 1A, 2A, 5A, 10A and 20A
External shunt input range : 50mV, 100mV and 200mV

Computing Function
This functions can compute and display crest factor (CF), apparent power (VA),
reactive power (var), power factor (PF) and phase angel (deg) by using the measuring
values for voltage, current and reactive power.
When the measured current more than 20A is input from the external input port, the
measured results can be converted to real values directly for displaying only by
inputting the calculation value for the used sensor.
When performing measurements with external PT and CT, the scaling function is very
P184623TS1381113

useful. It can convert the measured results to real values for displays directly. An
averaging function is also available when the tested signals are unstable and the
reading is difficult. This function is used to take the average of the measured results
before displaying them.
There are two methods for option: Exponential Averaging (EXP) and Arithmetic
Move Averaging (MOV).

Frequency Measurement Function

When connecting for the measuring circuit, operating with power ON is

strictly prohibit.

Be sure that the connection of measuring circuit is connected with voltage

and current terminal reliably, do not loose or fall off.
P184623TS1381113

The connection should far away from the instrument, do not contact.

Be sure that the signals of the object to be measured do not exceed the
maximum measuring range.

Turn ON the power when using, wait for self checking of the instrument then
provide power supply for the equipment to be measured. After measuring, cut
off the power
supply of the measured equipment at first, then turn OFF the power supply of
the instrument.

Use thick lead wires appropriate for the current to be measured.

 When measuring high currents, or currents ant voltages that contain

high-frequency components, wiring should be made with special attention paid
to mutual interference and noise problems.
 Keep the lead wires as short as possible.

When applying a current to be measured directly to the input terminals of

the instrument, make sure that the external shunt cable is not connected to
the instrument.

In above diagrams, the current which flow through the thick wires is bigger,
so that need the wires thick enough to insure the biggest current and reduce
the consumption. Otherwise it will affect the measuring accuracy, even arise
unpredictable serious effect.

2.2 Wiring method when Using External PT/CT

Use of a PT (or CT) enables measurement of voltage or current even if the maximum
voltage or maximum current of the object to be measured exceeds the maximum
measuring range.
 If the maximum voltage of the object to be measured exceeds 600V, connect an
external potential transformer (PT), and connect the secondary side of the PT to
the voltage input terminals.
 If the maximum current of the measuring object exceeds 20A connect an external
current transformer (CT), and connect the secondary side of the CT to the current
input terminals.
In the diagrams below, the thick lines represent the current circuit, and the thin lines
represent the voltage circuit.
P184623TS1381113

When applying a current to be measured directly to the input terminals of the

instrument, make sure that the external shunt cable is not connected to the
instrument.

When using an external CT, make sure not let the secondary side of the CT to
go open circuit while power is supplied, otherwise an extremely dangerous
high voltage will be generated on the secondary side of the CT.

A load current flows in the thick lines shown in the diagrams; therefore, a wire
with sufficient current capacity must be used for these lines. Otherwise that will
affect the test accuracy, even cause unpredictable serious result.

 Use of the scaling function enables direct reading of measured values on the
display. Please refer to section 4.2.5.
 It must be noted that measured values are affected by the frequency and phase
characteristics of PT and CT.

2.3 Wiring method when external shunt

In cases when the maximum current of the object to be measured exceeds 20A,
connect a voltage-output type current shunt having the desired rated current to the
external shunt input connector.
The sensor must be the voltage-output type
and have appropriate frequency and phase
characteristics.
An external shunt is shown as below, which
1-pin connected 4-pin inside the instrument
is input terminal H; at the same time 2-pin
connected 3-pin inside the instrument is
input terminal L.
Since 50mV(50A) 、 100mV(100A) and
200mV(200A) ranges are available for the
external shunt, use an external shunt whose voltage drop matches these ranges. If an
external shunt that does not match these ranges is used, convert the measured values
on the display to input current values using the scaling function. Refer to section
3.1.7.
P184623TS1381113

In the diagrams below, the thick lines represent the current circuit, and the thin lines
represent the voltage circuit. The area indicated by shadow must be as small as
possible to minimize measurement error.

Do not connect anything to the input current terminals (A,  ) of the

instrument, otherwise damage to the instrument or personnel injury may be
resulted.

When using an external shunt which is resistance, do not allow the resistance
shunts go open circuit while power is supplied, otherwise an extremely
dangerous high voltage will be generated on the shunt, and connect to the

EXT SHUNT interface.

A load current flows in the thick lines shown in the diagrams; therefore, a wire
with sufficient current capacity must be used for these lines.

 To avoid the effects of common-mode voltage, the external shunt must be

connected to the grounding side of the power source.
 If the measuring object is high frequency and high power and is not grounded,
the effects of inductance present on the shunt connecting cable will be
increased. In this case, use an isolation sensor (CT, DC-CT, clamp etc.).
