Dear Mr. Alburger,

My name is Gabe Miller I am a junior at Pine Lake Preparatory and I will be writing a paper to
go along with my Pride Project next year. My topic for this paper will be careers in medicine. I
chose this topic because I am very interested in the medical field and would like to really
consider some of the careers that could stem from that. I hope that from writing this paper and
working on the project I will get a better idea of whether this is the career path I want to pursue. I
have found a really good book on the history of western medicine that is extremely detailed
throughout the recorded history. I have also found many detailed sources on getting licensed as a
doctor and following through a career in medicine. These sources should help me complete my
goal of writing this paper and understanding more about careers in medicine.

While writing about careers in medicine I will mostly focus on physicians and surgeons but will
write the paper in a way that anybody interested in a career in medicine could get a lot from it. I
will start my paper by writing on the history of western medicine and important figures in
western medicine. From there I will focus more on what someone looking for a career in
medicine should consider and do throughout highschool and college. After writing on how to
become a person with a career in medicine I will write about the day to day life as a physician or
surgeon and what to expect as far as pay. I will end the paper by considering the future as far as
potential growth and maybe some changes to come for careers in medicine. After writing all
these things I hope that I can gain a general understanding of what a career in medicine entitles.

After finishing junior year and moving on to become a senior I will be required to create a
project called the Pride Project which is used to display my understanding of the topic and apply
it to the real world. I will need a mentor for my project who can help me understand the life of a
doctor and what all the job brings with it. I am hoping to work with Dr. Heider and if shadowing
him is not feasible, I could shadow one of his dietitians. In my mentoring hours I would like to
see what patient care looks like and how his/her schedule is layed out. From this assignment I
hope to gain a better understanding of how vigorous work as a doctor is and what to expect on a
day to day basis. I think that a great product for my topic might be designing a diet plan for a
person looking to improve overall health.
