REACTION PAPER
EDUC 210 reorganization of the Philippine educational
system

Free tuition fee law

Education is vital for one’s social and academic well-being. It is a survival tool used

to improve ourselves and performs better in the society. But education costs a hefty price

and not everyone can afford it. So should education be free for everyone? What does

free education even mean? Is it really free? But nothing is really free in this world. We

might not pay for it with money but in other forms nonetheless and these are the

advantages and disadvantages of obtaining the free education everyone desires to

have.

R.A. 10931, or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act is an act that

will provide for free tuition and other school fees in state universities and colleges (SUCs),

local universities and colleges (LUCs) and state-run technical vocational institutions (TVIs).

This law is an act promoting universal access to quality tertiary education by

providing free tuition and other school fees in state and local universities and colleges,

as well as state-run technical vocational institutions. This law may provide free tuition fee

for everyone, but it doesn’t mean it comes easy. To be granted with this privilege, the

student must fulfill the basic requirements such as the following: Passed the entrance

examination and other admission and retention requirement in their preferred SUC or

LUC. The student must have not completed any degree from any higher education

institution, public or private.

Money can cause a lot of stress to a family. Getting an education shouldn’t be a

process of begging and borrowing money and later on having to make payments to get

an education. An education can be beneficial to the country as well as the individual.

In order to make money, you have to spend money, which does not make sense. People

shouldn’t have this type of burden upon them for wanting to have an education. This

discourages families who can’t afford tuition. Even though there are many types of

financial aid, families who make just enough to not qualify would literally be spending all

they have to send their child to college.

Students have a lot of financial problems to worry about going into college, such

as books, dorms and food plans. Having one fewer economic factor to worry about

would be a great stress-reliever and students wouldn’t have to worry about being in debt

for years afterwards. Students shouldn’t feel punished with multiple fees to be educated.

College tuition should be free for schools to show that education is important and

encourage students to get an education.

In this Free Tuition Fee Act students will no longer have to pay tuition and

other fees in government-funded tertiary institutions after President

Rodrigo Duterte signed on Thursday night the highly-contentious Universal Access

to Quality Tertiary Education Act.

The decision of the president to go against the recommendation of his

economic managers to veto the bill was met with praises even from his critics,

with aggressive students’ groups calling the development a victory for the present

and future generation of Filipino students.
