1100 Series 1 Issue 1
Replacement Electronic Control Module October 2009

This Service Letter is a Product Improvement Program for installing a replacement Electronic Control Module
(ECM) on certain six and four cylinder engines, models PJ, NH and NJ.

Notes:
The campaign number for the six cylinder engine, model PJ is C09/018.
The campaign number for the four cylinder engine, models NH and NJ is C09/017.
The termination date for both campaigns is the 31st December 2010.
The information supplied in this Service Letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program.
Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your
Perkins product support representative.
All faulty Electronic Control Modules should be returned to the Part Return Centre in Peterborough with a
copy of the warranty claim on an urgent basis.

Problem
A component change was made within the ECM that causes the FET transistor to fail on 24 volt applications,
which in turn impacts the high voltage supply circuit. In some applications, diagnostic codes will be detected
on the fuel injection pump solenoid and in other applications the ECM will fail, causing the ECM supply fuse to
fail.

Parts Required
A fuel cooled ECM (Perkins part number 28170119) or an air cooled ECM (Perkins part number 28170120) is
required. Order the relevant ECM for your engine.

Repair Time Schedule

The total labour allowance for these campaigns will be a maximum of two hours for each engine.

Solution

A
The effected range of the ECMs that were supplied is between May 2009 and Sept 2009, with the first four
digits of the ECM serial number prefix (A1) between 148 9 and 264 9.

Rework Procedures
Scenario 1 - An ECM that has not failed (copy config file)
1 Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic connector.
2 Use the “Copy Configuration ECM Replacement” function from the Electronic Service Tool. If the “Copy
Configuration” is successful, proceed to Step 3, if not, proceed to Scenario 2.
Note: Record any Logged Faults and Events for your records.
3 Remove power from the ECM.
4 Remove the ECM. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, ‘Electronic Control Module – Remove and Install’.
5 Install the replacement ECM. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, ‘Electronic Control Module – Remove
and Install’.
6 Download the flash file.
7 Connect the Electronic Service Tool to the diagnostic connector.
8 Select “WinFlash” from the “Utilities” menu of the Electronic Service Tool.
9 Select the downloaded flash file.
10 If necessary, use the Electronic Service Tool to clear the rating interlock. To clear the rating interlock, enter
the factory password when the Electronic Service Tool is first connected. Activating the “Test ECM” mode will
also clear the rating interlock.
11 Use the Electronic Service Tool to program the parameters.
12 If the “Copy Configuration” procedure was successful, use the “Copy Configuration, ECM Replacement”
function to load the configuration file into the ECM.
Note: During the following procedure, Factory Passwords may be required. Contact the Parts Help Desk at
partshelpdesk@Perkins.com.
Scenario 2 - An ECM that has not failed (unable to copy config file)
1 Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic connector.
2 Record the following parameters:
Record all of the parameters on the “Configuration” screen.
Record all of the parameters on the “Throttle Configuration” screen.
Record all of the parameters on the “Mode Configuration” screen.
Record the serial numbers of the electronic unit injectors. The serial numbers for the electronic unit injectors
are shown on the “Injector Trim Calibration” screen.
Note: If the parameters cannot be read, refer to Senario 3.
3 Remove power from the ECM.
4 Remove the ECM. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Electronic Control Module – Remove and Install”.
5 Install the replacement ECM. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Electronic Control Module - Remove
and Install”.
Configure the parameters individually. The
parameters should match the parameters from step 2.
12 Perform the “Fuel System Verification Test”.
13 Check for logged diagnostic codes. Factory passwords are required to clear Logged Events.
14 Configure the parameters individually. The parameters should match the parameters from step 2.

15 Perform the “Fuel System Verification Test”.

16 Check for logged diagnostic codes. Factory passwords are required to clear Logged Events.
Scenario 3 - Failed ECM (engine parameters required from PTMI)
1 Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic connector.
2 If the parameters cannot be read, the parameters must be obtained elsewhere. Some parameters are
stamped on the engine information plate, but most parameters must be obtained from PTMI on the Perkins
Secured Internet. If this data is not available, contact the Global Technical Support team for assistance.
3 Remove power from the ECM.
4 Remove the ECM. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Electronic Control Module – Remove and Install”.
