Self and Identity

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. There is no place in the brain that generates a self.
ii. People are more likely to assimilate when primed to use a collectivistic self-
concept and are more likely to contrast when primed to use an individualistic
self-concept.
iii. Sufficient difference from the self may be cued by information that is non-
normative or extreme and by information referring to a particular instance or
exemplar rather than to a broader category.

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought I and me are

just a pronoun. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that the self is an I that thinks and that me is the content of those
thoughts.
ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that me is just
yourself without any other definitions. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that me content involves
mental concepts or ideas of one who is, was and will become.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought personal

identities and characteristics have the same meaning. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize personal identities reflect
traits or characteristics that may feel separate from one’s social and role
identities or linked to some or all of these identities.
3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. Do people lose their identity?
ii. If yes, what is usually the cause of it?
iii. What happens when you lose your sense of identity?
