Sarker and Md. Hassan Tareque, 2016:Effect of Cow Manure on Growth, Yield and
Nutrient Content of Mungbean. Asian Research Journal of Agriculture 2(1): 1-6, 2016,
Article no.ARJA.29297

A. Introduction
Highlight

Mungbean is an important food crop because it provides a cheap source of

easily digestible dietary protein which complements the staple rice in the country.
Its seed contains 24.7% protein, 0.6% fat, 0.9 fiber and 3.7% ash. Pulses, being
leguminous crops, are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen in the soil and enrich
soil fertility and productivity. The low yield of mungbean besides other factors may
partially be due to lack of knowledge and nutrition and modern production
technology. Being leguminous in nature, mungbean needs low nitrogen but require
optimum doses of other major nutrients as recommended.

Comment/critique

The introduction of this article was not clear since the authors’ failed to
mention what’s really the problem of the study they didn’t give a clear objectives in
conducting this research study.
B. Materials and Methods
Highlight
The experiment was conducted during the period from March to June 2014
to study the effect of cowdung on the growth, yield and nutrient content of
mungbean. The experiment consist of single factor: Cowdung (3 levels); C0: 0 ton
cowdung ha-1 (control), C1: 5 ton cowdung ha-1 and C2: 10 ton cowdung ha-1. The
experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five
replications. Urea, Triple super phosphate (TSP), Muriate of potash (MOP) and
gypsum were used as a source of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and sulphur,
respectively. Five plants from each plot were randomly selected and marked with
sample card. Plant height and number of branches plant-1 were recorded from
selected plants at an interval of 10 days started from 20 DAS to 50 DAS and at
harvesting time. The statistical tool was used is analysis of variance. The
significance of the difference among the treatment means was estimated by the
Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability.

Comments/critique

The materials and methods of the study was clearly stated on how they are
going to conduct the experiment. It was also clear that author emphasized the
design of the experiment as well as the statistical data that been used in the study.
The collection of data was also emphasizes to give a reliable result of the study.
For me, I was amazed and interested to read and know the result of the study.
C. Result and Discussion
Highlight
The treatment that give the tallest plant height of mungbean was found from
10 ton cowdung ha-1 (C2), and for the number of branches 10 ton cowdung ha -1
(C2), was also observed that give the highest number of branches of mungbean.
Generally, the 10 ton of cowdung ha-1 (C2) give significant effects to the growth,
yield and nutrient content of mungbean.
Comment/critique
Based on the result of the study, the statistical tools that been used was
appropriate to this kind of experiment. And the result revealed that the manure
could give an influence to the growth, yield and nutrient content of mungbean.
Generally, the result of the study was enough to formulate a conclusion and give
recommendation to the readers.
D. Conclusion
Highlight
Based on the result the 10 ton cowdung ha-1 was found best in respect to
growth, yield and nutrient content of mungbean. Further studies may be carried
out with different doses of organic manure.

Comment/critique

The conclusion give clarity to the findings and result of the data that been
gathered and it will serve as justification on the application engage in the study.
However, the authors failed to mention for any recommendation but the author
encourage everyone to make a further research with increasing dosage of the
treatment.

Integrated Manure and Fertilizer Use, Maize Production and Sustainable Soil
Fertility in Sub Humid Zone of West Africa
A.A. Abunyewa, C. Osie, E.K. Asiendu and E.Y. Safo
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A. Introduction
Highlight
Many small holder farms in the savana zone of West Africa, decline in the
soil fertility resulting in low crop production is a major reason affecting food
security. Most of the farmers in savana zone of West Africa keep livestock besides
arable farming (Tarawali et al.,2004). Manure serves as one of the potential
sources of soil organic matter and plant nutrient in this zone.
Comment/critique
The introduction of this article was very, the objective and problems are
identified as the basis of conducting this study. For me, the authors’ emphasizes
well about the purpose of conducting this study and it is enough to sustain the
interest of the readers.
B. Materials and Methods
Highlights
The study was conducted at the Savana Agricultural Research Institute
experimental fields at Nyankpala, ner Tamale, in sub-humid zone of West Africa.
Soil and manure analysis was done by taken the samples in 20 cm depth at the
start of the study. And the application of cattle manure was done in two methods:
broadcast and spot placement at 10 cm from the seed. Inorganic fertilizer was also
use as combination of manure. The experimental layout was factorial RCBD with
four replication. The statistical analysis is ANOVA to establish treatment and the
interactions effect on maize grain yield, soil pH, total nitrogen, soil organic matter
and cation exchange capacity. Statistical analysis were performed with the
Statistical Program SAS Windows 9.1.
Comment/critique
The materials and methods was very clear and demonstrated all the steps
and preparation of the conduct of the study. The design, statistical tools and other
materials needed in the study was emphasized by the authors and that is very
important factor in the experimental study. However, the authors’ failed to mention
the dose of each treatment.
C. Result and Discussion
Highlight
Initial soil analysis showed that the soil is sandy loam and moderately acidic.
There was high variability in plant nutrient content of the manure used in the three
year period. In all three years, manure application significantly increased maize
grain yield. However, the challenge of farmers is how to get a bulk amount of
manure that will be used in the field as organic fertilizer.
Comments/critique
Based on the result of the study, the materials used in the study was reliable
enough to test the significance of each treatment. As the study revealed that 4 tons
ha-1 of manure could give an increased yield of maize compared to control
treatment. However, the increase application of manure could not influence to the
yield of maize.
D. Conclusion
Highlight
Continuous application of smaller amount of manure plus fertilizer would
increase grain yield and sustain soil fertility in sub-humid zone. The authors
concluded that the application of 4 t ha -1 of manure and supplement give more
yield to maize compared to 8 t ha-1 of manure
Comment/critique
Based on the result of the study the authors’ give an appropriate conclusion
and answer the objectives of the study. The authors also give recommendation to
the farmers.
