When Tagore visited Europe in 1921, he was greatly disappointed. He had thought that Europe
the shrine of humanity. But he found the people to be greedy and materialistic. Factories had made
fellocmhs ugly. Every one was eager to grab as much wealth as possible. There was no love for nature or

The Voice of Humanity is a lecture he made in Italy during his visit to Europe j 6re the
outbreak of the II World War. In this lecture he speaks about the damaging influenc f terialism.
Europe had progressed on account of industrialisation and scientific progres or they had
forgotten to love fellow human beings or achieve the Infinite. There is no room wing expression
of the spirit. Only by realising the Infinite man can achieve happiness. Mat less alone cannot
make man happy. Every person has to find out the divine element in him and ccordingly. Then only
can man attain happiness.

in the form of the secord War which destroyed the whole of Europe. Tagore's speech was
prophetic in this respect.
Tagore says us of against material progress: However only by achieving the Infinite. We can
make the mate rld a happy one. Merely by t@_help of scienc'é the world will wither like a tree
without too as to listen to the inner voice of God. This is the true source of happiness. Only
those wh te the spirit of humanity will prosper.
