CARTA ABIERTA

ix
transmitido a nuevas generaciones.
XII’
oral, ya que utilizaba solo Ia labiolectura.
xiv
I
2 Mindel, Eugene y Vernon, McCay, They Grow In Silence, College Hill Press, 1987.
xv

COMUNICACION NO VERBAL:
xvli
AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) 0 AMESLAN
xvi’
I
brado a utilizar.
COMUNICACION TOTAL: J
lenguaje. Incluye el habla, ampliflcación (audffonos), lábiolectura, gestos, seflas, dele
treo manual, pantomima, lectura, escritura, dibujos y cualquier otro medic para
expresar ideas, lenguaje y vocabulario.
no importa cuál sea ésta.
a. PosiciOn de la mano
b. Orientación de Ia palma de la mano
c. Movimientos
d. LocalizaciOn (dónde ocurren los movimientos)
USO BE CLASIFICADORES:

COMENTARTO FINAL

INTRODUCTION
This book is, the culmination of a wide range of experiences lived throughout
long years of daily work with the hearing impaired and the deaf population of Puerto
Rico.
The book can serve as a teachers’ guide in sign language classes, as a text for
students, and can be of service to all interested. I expect it will help to strengthen the
communication and the exchange of information and feelings between the deaf and
the hearing population. I consider these, essential elements to help us grow and reach
productive lives.
xxu’
DEAFNESS
Deafness is, of all the physical impairments that afflict the human being, the least
understood of them all. In spite of being a physical condition, it is invisible and this
minimizes and blurs the natural empathy we develop towards people with other visible
conditions. Due to the fact that our ears have no natural closings, it is impossible for
us to experience the loneliness and the deprivation suffered by the hearing impaired,
a situation that gets worse when the person is born deaf.
Deaf persons have been considered for years as “deaf-mutes”. This denomination
has been found inadequate and has been changed to “deafs” or “hearing impaired”
inasmuch as the problem lies in the loss of hearing and not in the vocal system. The
oral communication skills will vary depending on various factors such as the age at
which the hearing loss occurred, the degree of the loss, the existence of a secondary
impairment and the special aids provided (such as speech therapy, etc.) since early
childhood.
On the other hand, deaf persons are self-conscious of their different voices from
those of hearing persons. This is one of the reasons they rather use signs when away
from home or in places where they don’t feel at ease. There is no recent census in
Puerto Rico to enable us to determine the actual incidence of deafness in the island.
xxiv
The only study we depend on is that performed by the Department of Health of
Puerto Rico in 1974 which establishes there were at the time 97,962 persons with
severe hearing loss problems. Such study includes children from 6 years on to adults
over 65. It is assumed that such figure may have increased due to the living environment
of constant noise and also the lack of adequate hearing prevention programs.
SIGN LANGUAGE
The term sign language actually applies to the existing forms of manual commu
nication which are covered later in this introduction. However, this term was referred
for years to the American Sign Language, known also as “ASL” or “AMESLAN”,
which is the native language of approximately 400,000 persons in North America.’
Sign language is closely related to the culture and tradition of a country. For this
reason, it cannot be assumed that just because Spanish is spoken in certain countries,
the signs used in Puerto Rico are the same as those used in Spain, Mexico, etc.
Nevertheless, it is possible to have a certain influence from one country to the other
in their manual communication systems. Such is the situation of Puerto Rico and the
United States due to the existing bond between both countries and the constant
traveling of hearing and deaf persons towards the United States.
xxv
Among our deaf population, the most significant reason for the above is the
search for better educational opportunities as Puerto Rico still lacks a special school
for the deaf to have them fulfill their true needs, as well as to allow them reach
secondary and higher educational levels. The constant moving of deaf persons to the
United States has been a determining factor in the way of communication used
by a
great part of our hearing impaired population. Once these persons are exposed and
learn English signs upon their return to the island, they use them, combining indistinctly
signs from here and there, and transmit them to other deaf persons with whom they
relate. Such influence has been felt more among the metropolitan areas where
deaf
persons gather in social groups to share and exchange interests and goals. There
is a
different situation inland due to a much slower affluence toward the United States
and the lack of established deaf groups. This has made the inland deaf person
s
develop and individual sign communication system based mostly in home signs
and
signs learned with the influence of the English signs. Actually, we can affirm there are
various sources which have influenced the communication system of the puertorrican
deaf. These are:
Deaf adults:
Use mostly English signs learned at the original St. Gabriel School for the
Deaf (1902-1956 At the time signs were used in this school) combined
-
with signs learned afterwards when they traveled to the United States for a
period of time. Such knowledge has been shared and transmitted to new
generations.
Other
For some time now, we have had other religious groups (such as Evangelical
and Baptists) that have come from Canada and the United States to teach
and work with the deaf. These groups have also affected the use of signs in
Puerto Rico.
xxvi
It can be concluded that the. communication needs of the puertorrican deaf
depend mostly on the place from which they come, their level of education, if any, and
their past or present social and religious interaction whether in the metropolitan area,
inland or even the United States.
Years ago, before knowledge on deafness was acquired, it was the general belief
that deaf persons could not be educated as they were not able to talk nor think and
thus, had no ideas on their own. Most of the time people were either afraid of them
or the deafs were subject to mockery.
During the 16th century, italian Girolamo Cardamo expressed himself against
the old theory related to the lack of thought and oral skills of the deaf and designed a
code which never was used.
In the 17th century, Juan MartIn Pablo Bonet, developed the one hand manual
alphabet which still prevails with very few changes. Bonet wrote a book on the
education of the deaf, but at such time education was only available to a select group
of rich people who could afford paid tutors.
Public education for deaf children started in France and Germany where contro
versy on the different communication methods was initiated. This situation still pre
vails.
In 1775 Abbe L’Eppe founded in France the first public school for the deaf. He
is considered the father of public education for the deaf as well as of modern sign
language. He invented sign language based on natural gestures and pantomime.
Meanwhile, in Germany, Samuel Heinecke is considered the father of oralism as he
used only speech and lip reading.
In 1902, a group of Sisters of the Sacred Heart came to Aguadilia, Puerto Rico,
to establish the first school for the deaf. Shortly after, these sisters moved to Santurce
so as to have the school more accessible to all the deafs throughout the island. In
1913, St. Gabriel School for the Deaf/Mute was established in San Jorge Street on
Barrio Cangrejos of Santurce. These sisters used English sign language in their
teaching. In 1956, an administrative and educational change took place in the school
as a result of two important factors: the true mission of the American sisters was not
to educate deaf children and there was being created a language barrier between the
deaf students and their parents and relatives.
It was at this time that Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (Her
manas Franciscanas de Ia Inmaculada Concepción) came from Spain to Puerto Rico
to take over the education of the deaf. The movement brought along a drastic change
in the predominant educational philosophy existing at the time. Sign language gave
way to oralism, and the first was totally eliminated. In spite of this, deaf people
continued using and disseminating the previously learned sign language system.
Our education model in this area is the United States where deaf people have
opportunities to achieve maximum educational levels. The largest educational center
xxviii
for the deaf in the world is in Washington, D.C. It was established by Thomas Gallaudet
in 1864 and it includes academic levels from pre-school to graduate school. This
institution serves as an international model on the education of the deaf.
Just until 15 years ago, 85% of the schools for the deaf in the United. States
availed only of the oral 2method. Neither gestures or signs were allowed in the
classroom and parents were discouraged so as not to use signs at home. The reason
to reject the signs was based on the educators’ belief that such a practice would
stimulate and make speechreading easier.
Now-a-days most deaf children attending residential and other schools in the
United States develop speech reading skills with the assistance of sign language. This
change has come as a result of the request of teachers, parents and deaf adults who
appealed to legislation in order to require equal opportunities in the schools.
Studies in the United States presented in the book They Grow in Silence by
Eugene Mindel and McCay Vernon, establish that existing theories based on the
learning of sign language in relation to the development of other communication skills
are false. The following are some of the results of such studies:
1. Sign language, as well as spoken language, is learned best during the early
years of life
2. Teachers may simultaneously vocalize and use signs so as to make the
teaching of English grammar easier
3. Children exposed to simultaneous communication can learn and understand
this type of combined communication. How well they do depends on the
persons with whom they practice
4. Reading can be made easier to signing deaf children as it does not depend
on their ability to speak and hear, but on their ability to understand sign
and speech together or sign alone
The conclusions may help to provide the deaf child with the necessaiy tools to
reach an independent, productive life in society, full of negative myths which have
adversely influenced their education.
2 Mindel, Eugene and Vernon, MeCay, They Grow in Silence, College Hill Press, 1987.
MANUAL COMMUNICATION METHODS
MANUAL SPELLING
Manual spelling is the system that can be combined with other communication
methods. It consists of the spelling of words, one letter at a time, using the 27 hand
configurations which represent the alphabet commonly used in Spanish and English
(the latter has no “N”). Manual spelling is used when no specific sign to express a
concept is known. Example of this are proper names and technical terms pertaining
to a particular discipline.
Manual alphabets used in Puerto Rico and the United States are the same, thus
only one hand is used. This varies in other countries where both hands combined may
be used.
Hearing persons usually learn ASL signs without studying its grammar rules to
use it later following the syntax of their own language which is the case in this
communication system. To use signs following the language syntax, Spanish or English
• in this case, provides a visual form for children to learn the language, though the
success of this purpose has been questioned by several investigators. An example of
“PIDGIN” in Spanish is:
Spanish “Ayerftthnos al cine con los ninos”
(Yesterday we went to the movies with the children)
“PIDGIN” is the way of communication most commonly used between the deaf
and the hearing.
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
GROUP OR FAMII
Y SIGNS
4
These are particular sigus pertaining to a group or a family. They usually are a
combination of established signs and signs created by the group with the addition of
common gestures, pantomime and facial expression. These are not easily understood
by persons not related to the group or family.
xx
AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) OR AMESLAN
This communication system has been defined as the natural language of the U.S.
deaf and has been accepted as a full language with its own structure and syntax
es. Its
history goes back to the 19th century when it originated as a result of a combi
nation
of American and French signs.
It is important to point out that ASL is used either by persons with competent
oral skills as well as by those who lack these. To a person, unaware of this inform
ation
it may seem that the deaf person who uses ASL does not know how to speak
correct
English. Yet, we must accept these rules the same way we accept those
of other
languages.
ASL makes little use of manual spelling and omits articles. In fact, it conden
ses
as much as possible, availing of signs combined with facial expression, gesture
s, body
language and the use of space to deliver the message.
This system combines standard signs with ASL following exact Englis
h syntax
and it includes inflections, suffix and prefixes. It is the complete represe
ntation of the
elements which make up the English language and it is used to teach this
language to
deaf children. Also made-up signs are used to express those concepts
which tradition
ally have no signs. In many instances the first initial of the word
is used, this being
accepted by a great number of adults and yet rejected by those who prefer
true ASL
signs. We have already mentioned the influence of this system in Puerto Rico.
xxxil
The above communication system as well as the PSE results less frustrating to
the beginner sign language student whose primary language is either English or
Spanish. ASL is a more difficult language since the student has to learn the vocabulary
with a different structure to what he is used to.
TOTAL COMMUNICATION
TEXT FORMAT
The text is divided into 24 chapters, some in relation one to the other, and some
in alphabetical order. The vocabulary includes the explanation in Spanish of the sign
along with its drawing and then the explanation of the sign in English when it varies,
also with the corresponding drawing. Examples to better illustrate the meaning are
also included.
The English drawing is shaded so as to distinguish it from the Spanish sign. Other
signs which are derived from the English language are also included, but not shaded
because they are indistinctly used with those in Spanish. The reader will find signs
with only one drawing. This shows there is no difference between the sign used in the
United States and the one used in Puerto Rico.
The signs showing a square at the right of the explanation are puertorrican signs
and may or not have an English translation. Not all of them include their origin as no
intent to investigate this phase was performed.
The index appears in Spanish and English and besides, each concept has its
definition in English so as to facilitate the learning of both languages.
SIGNS EXECUTION
In most of the signs, one hand is predominant or active in its movement and the
xxxii
other is passive. So, the left handed person must reverse the directions shown in the
book. Not necessarily the left handed person uses the left hand to make the sign. What
is important is that while beginning to learn signs, consistently uses as dominant the
hand which makes him feel more at ease.
Signs have a similar function to that of the words of spoken language. Words are
made up of units which function in different ways to make each one of them different
to the other. In this same way there are four factors which make the difference in each
sign. These are:
C. Movements
D. Localization (where movements occur)
An omission or alteration of any of the above can change the meaning of the sign
to one completely different. Besides these manual factors there are other non-manual
characteristics which includes: movement and facial expression (gestures), eyes, head
and body posture. These characteristics can change the meaning or the emphasis
given to a particular sign. Examples of these are: raising the eyebrow to express
doubt, questioning, etc.; frowning the forehead, biting the lips, head movements to
show a negative meaning, among others.
It is important to remember that the only way to acquire good skills in sign
language is to practice it preferably with deaf persons. These persons usually are
flattered when a hearing person shows interest in learning sign language and are most
enthusiastic and willing to teach it.
USE OF CTASSLFIERS
The reader will notice in a great number of signs that the ‘7” (conjunction) is
used in different positions to indicate different signs. “Y” conjunction is one of the
various classifiers utilized in ASL. Classifiers are different manual positions that may
substitute a noun once it has been identified (in this case the classifier will function as
a pronoun), and a verb because it also has the quality of movement. Besides, classifiers
can convey information about how the action takes place (ex. fast, slow). 3 Finally,
3 Baker, Charlotte and Dennis Cokely, American Sign Language, T. 1. Publishei5, Inc., 1981.
xxxiv
classifiers show where people or things are located in space, and how they relate to
each other in terms of localization.
When we use classifiers we indicate quantity (singular or plural) by: using one
or both hands; repeat the classifier in different positions; or alternate its movements
using both hands.
Besides the “Y” hand position, other examples of classifiers are the index finger,
the clawed hand and figure number “3”.
1. In many signs both hands are used with similar movements, as well as with
the same hand position and localization (ex. family, important).
2. Other signs carry the same movement but alternated and in opposite
directions (ex. conversation, discussion).
3. Some names and adjective signs can be used to describe size, shape, color
and other elements. (ex. yellow if the movement is slow it may indicate it
-
4. Some signs are directional: they may show direction towards the person
who is signing, to other persons or among a group of persons which alters
the meaning (ex. to give movement towards oneself is “give me” but if the
-
movement goes towards the other person is “to give you”. If the sign is
exchanged in front of the person it means “give one to the other”).
5. Some signs may be repeated to show continued action or feeling (ex. wait...
wait.., wait, which means to wait for a long time; cry... cry... cry indicates
crying for a long time).
6. In ASL; only past, present and future is established before or after the verb,
contrary to Spanish or English language which expresses time changing the
form of the verb. (Ex. In Spanish “Ayer fuimos al parque y comimos
-
helado”. In English “Yesterday we went to the park and we had ice cream”.
-
7. The verb “to be” is only used when following the Spanish or English order
but not in ASL. Pre-lingual deaf persons (those who have acquired deafness
prior to developing language) hardly ever use it.
8. Numbers from 1 to 9 are made with the palm facing out; from 11 to 15 are
made with the palm facing inside; and from 16 to 19 are made turning the
palm from inside to outside. From number 20 on, are made with the palm
facing out. Calendar years are made combining the first two numbers (ex.
17, 18, 19, and then the next two, 55, 64, 88).
9. When performing the manual alphabet, the palm should face frontward
except letters C and 0 where the palm faces left and G and H where the
palm faces inward.
10. When there are repeated letters such as double “R” or “L” these are simply
moved towards the right.
11. Fluency and rhythm must be kept when making signs or spelling manually.
It is very important to complete the sign and to utilize adequate space for
them. The size of the signs will depend on the distance which separates the
persons which are communicating. If it is a short distance, signs must be
kept near the body, but if far apart, signs must be made larger.
