CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Now-a-days, Cell phones is going to be an integral part of our daily life as well as university life
and culture. Even a casual observation of today’s high school students will reveal cell phones being used,
both overtly and covertly, in every possible campus setting, including the classroom. (Bohlander, et al.
2012) suggests that high school students frequently use the cell phone during class time despite rules
against doing so. As cell phone technology continues its rapid development, the device appears capable of
‘For example, modern “smartphones” provide students with immediate, portable access to many of
retrieval, file sharing, and interacting with professors and fellow students (McCormick, 2012) (Yeh,
2013). Conversely, recent research suggests that many high school students perceive the cell phone
primarily as a leisure device, and most commonly use cell phones for social networking, surfing the
Internet, watching videos, and playing games (Lepp, et al., 2013;) (Lepp, et al., 2015).
If typically utilized for leisure rather than education, then cell phones may disrupt learning within
academic settings (Levine, et al., 20010). Thus, the potential relationship between cell phone use and
academic performance is not clear. Mobile space handsets were not designed with the consumers’ usage in
mind at the beginning. As at the time it was quite expensive to own handset as individual and the
One of the added advantages of mobile phones is that it has made internet more accessible and
affordable than ever before, thus giving people a voice on the internet. Lots of Nigerians now access the
internet through their mobile Phones or mobile Phones enabled device. Nigerians have also joined the
rest of the world on Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Gmail, and Google with quite a huge number of them
cardiorespiratory fitness in a sample of typical high school students. However, modern cell phones enable
users to access a variety of electronic media at almost any time and any place. Popular activities such as
playing video games, surfing the Internet, and monitoring social media sites are now all easily
accomplished with most cell phones. Although the cell phone is likely to be on hand while high school
students are in class and studying, research investigating its relationship to academic performance is
limited. Intensive cell phone use was related to school failure as well as other negative behaviors such as
Thus, it is necessary to link each of these activities, independent of cell phone use, to academic
performance. Both theoretical perspectives and previous empirical studies suggest that the recent rapid
increase in cell phones has influenced multiple aspects of our daily lives, particularly those of Students.
Hence, the aims of the current study is to determine the influence of the mobile phone usage on their
behavior during class hours among male and female students of Kapatagan National High School.
Mobile phone which comes in different models each for specific functions is one of the basic essential
gadgets possessed by an average school student which relatively might certainly influence such students’
in their behavior. This study therefore, seeks to address the effects of mobile phones on students’ behavior
in grade 12 students of Kapatagan National School. This study entitled “The effects of mobile phone
usage to male and female towards their behavior during class hours among the grade 12 - IA-A students of

INTRODUCTIVE STATEMENT:
1.) There is significant difference among male students’ behavior in excessive usage of mobile
phone.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The independent variable is the mobile phone while the dependent variable is the effects of
excessive usage.
Scientific research study findings direct that the patronage of smart portable phones might result into a
great number of signs and symptoms such as head pains, reduced concentration and memory loss, and also
tiredness (Khan, 2009). Our findings indicated that students are influenced negatively to a great extent by
the mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music and others while their academic
activities are neglected and left to suffer. Also, this study discovered that the use of mobile phone is
uncontrollable among students which are the leading cause of poor academic performance and behavior

This study focused only on the Grade 12 Students of Kapatagan National High School who were officially
enrolled in the year 2019-2020. The data records are based on the questionnaires answered by the
respondents.
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
In assistance for better understanding in this work, the following terms are defined according to their used
in the study:
MOBILE PHONE – a telephone with access to a cellular radio system so it can be used over a wide area,
TECHNOLOGY – the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry
SMART PHONE – a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a
touchscreen interface, internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded
applications
SOCIAL NETWORKING – the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users,
SURFING – alternatively referred to as web surfing. Surfing describes the act of browsing the internet by
going from one web page to another web page using hyperlinks in an internet browser
The study entitled “The effects of excessive usage of mobile phone in academic performances among the
grade 12 students of KNHS” was conducted to know how can over using of mobile phones can effect in
the academic performances of the students specially to those ACADS based strands in the Grade 12
curriculum. Also the research would be a great help to the following persons or individuals:
STUDENTS: This study can help the students because it gives them an easier work making their
TEACHERS: This study can help the teachers to have an easy access to their upcoming lessons
PARENTS: This study can have a huge help to the parents because through mobile phones they
COMMUNITY: It also helps the community because most of the people now have their mobile
The mobile phone was originally made for adults for business use. This is extremely similar to the
fixed telephone in the early 20th century, where telephone engineers explained that the telephone was
made for the business world and not for social conversation. The growth of mobile phone technology is
demonstrated by the fact that in 2002 the number of mobile phone users worldwide, surpassed those fixed-
phone users. It has been predicted that by the end of 2010, the number of mobile phone subscribers
There have been some significant studies on problematic mobile-phone use. One such study by
(Jumoke,2015 et al) explored that mobile phone use was significantly and negatively related to academic
performance of the students. Their findings highlighted that academic performance of the students usually
gets impaired due to excessive internet usage through mobile phones. The first finding of the study
revealed that problematic-mobile-phone use had a significant negative relationship with academic
performance of the students which means that as the mobile phone use among students increases, their
academic performance decreases. This finding is consistent with many other researches (Lepp2015 et al)
Although cellphones have been shown to produce a negative impact on the student’s learning, they
continue to play major role in the lives of a students. According to the Pew Research Center, 72% of the
students and a global average of 43% of individuals report owning a cellphone (Poushter2016).
Additionally, three quarters of students use the internet on the cellphone several times a day, averaging at
least 5 h per day (Andrews, 2015 et al). In addition, it was found that social networking mobile
applications were very useful to make communication easier and enhancing the effective flow of
information and idea sharing among students. But usage of social networking mobile application had a
negative influence on the academic performance of the students (Yeboah, 2015 et al). Students spend most
of the time in chatting, music and mailing which divert their concentration during the study.

METHODOLOGY
Presented in this chapter are the research design, research settings, respondents of the study,
research instrument, data gathering procedure, and the statistical treatment of data.
Research Design
This study employed a quantitative research design. The designed used was exploratory research,
as the name implies, intended to explore the research question and does not intend to offer final and
conclusive solutions to existing problems. This type of research is usually conducted to study a problem
problem which is not clearly defined. It is conducted to have a better understanding of the existing
problem, but will not provide conclusive results. For such a research, a researcher starts with a general
idea and uses this research as a medium to identify issues that can be the focus for future research. An
important aspect here is that the researcher should be willing to change his/her direction subject to the
Research Setting
This study was conducted in Kapatagan National High School is one of the public schools in
Lanao del Norte. The school has a land area of 6.03 hectares. Kapatagan is one of the twenty-two
municipalities located in Lanao del Norte. It is a third class municipality with the land area of 25,048.4
The participants of this study were the Grade 12 students of Kapatagan Nation High School
School year 2019-2020. The total number of the students were 20-30. The respondents was randomly
selected.
Research Instrument
This study using questionnaire-checklist as the principal tool in the gathering of data from the
respondents. In the framing up of the questionnaire-checklist, the researchers earnestly read several
references like books, magazines and will be asking to approved theses as well as through internet
Having found the questionnaire valid, the researchers then start gathering the data by giving the
questionnaire to the respondents personally. After collecting the accomplished forms, the researcher tally
the responses, put into tables for statistical computation as basis for analysis and interpretation of the data.
Ethical Considerations
In this research, the ethical issues student-participants were resolved during the data gathering. The
researcher made them aware of the nature their participation and consent forms were given to provide a
proof of their voluntary engagement in the study. Privacy and confidentiality of the participants was also
Data Analysis
The study made use of the survey responses from the participants as the main data sources. To
examine differences between Mobile phones and Computers for playing online games and using Internet,
two sample I-test was calculated Mobile phones and Computers was used as the dependent variable for
each test. A standard convention level of p<.05 was used for evaluating statistical significance of all the
l. T-test is a statistical test which is widely used to compare the mean of two groups of samples. It is
therefore to evaluate whether the means of the two sets of data are statistically significantly different from
each other. This was used to determine whether there is a significance difference between the student’s
