TWO/THREE LESSON SEQUENCE – Classifying Living Things

By: Al Rischia Nigel Panganiban

1.) Description of learners – A class comprises of 25 students both ranges from the age
of 7-9 years old. Students belong to a normal class where everyone can read, talk, and
write.
2.) Rationale – This lesson will help the 3rd grade students in classifying living things that
can be found on Earth. This also aims to help the students differentiate and know the
traits between a living thing and a non-living thing. Another aim is to let the students
to identify how each of the kingdoms differ from each other.
3.) Learning Intentions
 Students will differentiate living things from non-living things.
 Students will classify which kingdom each living thing belong.
4.) Success Criteria
 Students should be able to analyze what a living thing is.
 Student should be able to classify the five different kingdoms.

Lesson 1: Classifying Living Things

All living things can be classified into five group known as Kingdoms.
Five Kingdoms

 Plants – These living things uses air, water, and light to make food. They don’t have
sense organs like eyes, noses, ears or mouths, and they cannot move from one place
to another. They are attached to the ground because of their roots. Plants grow from
seeds and they have different parts such as stems, leaves, and roots.
 Fungi – These living things don’t have sense organs and they don’t have the ability to
move from one place to another. They get their food from other living things example
of these living things are mushrooms and moulds. There are fungi that are microscopic
like yeast. This means that they can’t be seen with the naked eye.
 Animals – These living things can move around in order for the to find food, shelter,
and to reproduce. Animals give birth to their young while other animals lay eggs.
 Algae and Protists– are protist that live on water. They are like plants because they
can make their own food. Algae look like plants but they do not have roots or leaves.
Protists on the other hand, are microscopic and they feed on other living things to live.
They live in different habitats and examples of these are amoeba and paramecium.
 Bacteria – They are microscopic organisms that can live in different types of habitats.
Some can make their own food while other can get their food from another beings.
