2. Locate three doctoral dissertations that examine Firebird by Stravinsky. Provide an annotated
bibliography for each one. Is the full text available online?

Steshko, Joni Lynn. "Stravinsky's “Firebird”: Genesis, Sources, and the Centrality of the 1919 Suite."
Order No. 9976242, University of California, Los Angeles, 2000.

The goal of Steshko’s dissertation is to take steps towards a critical edition of Firebird, including the
suites. The dissertation seeks to catalog and evaluate all available sources for creating such an edition,
including manuscripts, sketches, autographs, and printed scores. The dissertation’s conclusion calls for
future work around reconciling errors between those sources and understanding the substantial amount of
reorchestration and other changes that Stravinsky applied over time. (The full text is available online.)

Bowman, Marcel. "The Human Versus the Supernatural: Intervallic, Motivic, and Harmonic Connections
in Stravinsky's "the Firebird"." Order No. 3746742, The University of Utah, 2015.

Bowman’s dissertation focuses on the leitmotifs of the characters in Firebird. He notes that the music
associated with the human characters has been viewed as diatonic in nature, in contrast to that of the
magical characters which appears to be more chromatic. Bowman argues that melodic and harmonic
relationships in fact bridge the two groups, particularly between the human princesses and the magical
Koschei. (The full text is available online.)
Fletcher, Allison Marie Flores. "Ten Orchestral Excerpts for Piccolo: An Historical and Stylistic
Analysis." Order No. 3307203, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 2008.

This dissertation seeks to provide historical context and musical analysis for important piccolo solos in
the standard repertoire. In the case of Firebird, the author examines the solo in “Variation de l’oiseau de
feu” and analyzes discrepancies between available editions. The author also provides resources for
addressing technical issues in the piccolo part and includes performance recommendations pertaining to
rhythm and articulation.
