Data Gathering

A letter of request together with the survey questionnaire was sent by the researchers to the
Division Office of Pasig City for approval in conducting their research of Sta. Lucia High School. The
selected Grade 10 students for the first and second grading period from their mathematics teachers.

Letters of approval was shown to the subject teachers and explain what survey was still about
and its purpose. The researchers discussed the items on the questionnaire, then the respondents was
given enough time for answering the questionnaire.

The collected data from the answered questionnaires was classified tabulated, analyzed, and
interpreted using statistical tools.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The statistical tools were used to treat the data and answer the question in the statement of the
problem.

The statement of the problem number 1 weighted mean was used to describe how the students
perceived the reward and punishment by their teachers.

The formula is as shown:

∑WX
x̅=
∑W
Where: X̅ = Weighted mean
W= Weight of frequency of each option
X= Value of each option

The statement of the problem number 2 was used percentage to determine the performance
level.
The statement number 3 the Pearson r Correlation was used to determine the relationship
between the reward and punishment to the students performance in mathematics. The Pearson r
Correlation shown:
N ∑xy −∑ (x) (y)
r=
√[N∑𝑥 2 − ∑(𝑥 2 )] [𝑁∑𝑦 2 − ∑(𝑦 2 )]

Where: r= Pearson r Correlation Coefficient

N= number of value in each data set
∑xy= sum of products of paired scores
∑x= sum of x scores
∑y= sum of y scores
∑𝑥 2 = sum of squared x scores
∑𝑦 2 = sum of squared y scores
The researchers was used the scale below to interpret the result from the Pearson r
Correlation and to find out a correlation between the reward and punishment to the student
performance in mathematics.

Interpretation for Pearson r Correlation

Scale Interpretation
±1.00 − ±0.81 Very High Correlation
±0.80 − ±0.61 High Correlation
±0.60 − ±0.41 Moderate Correlation
±0.40 − ±0.21 Low Correlation
±0.20 − ±0.00 Very Low Correlation

Scale above was taken from the book Assessment of Students’ Learning: A practical
approach by Alberto A. Rico (2011).

The significant relationship, t – test for relationship was used

r√𝑛 − 2
t=
√1 − 𝑟 2

Where: r= Correlation Coefficient

n= number of pairs
