A. Introduction (Concept)
This experiment aims to find out what will happen when the blade put on the surface of
the given liquid sample (kerosene, ethanol, and water), when you put the drop of given liquid
sample in the plastic cover, and when you drop the given liquid sample near the charged comb.
B. Materials
Liquid samples: water, ethyl alcohol, kerosene
 Three burets
 Beakers or glass jars with wide mouth
 Three pieces blade
 Small piece of wax paper or plastic sheet
 Three droppers
 Plastic comb, cloth to rub comb
 Glass rod
 Some newspapers to catch drips and spills

C. Procedure
 Liquid and Charged Object

1. Place a liquid sample in each of the buret.

2. Rub the comb on a piece of cloth.
3. Open the buret stopcock and allow a thin steady stream of liquid to flow.
4. Place the rubbed part of the comb close to the stream of liquid. Make sure to rub the comb with
the cloth before using it with the next liquid.
5. Observe and record how the rubbed comb affected the stream of liquid.
 Liquid and Drops on Wax Paper

1. Lay a piece of wax paper flat on the surface of the table.

2. Using a dropper, place a drop of a liquid sample on the wax paper. Do the same for the two other
liquids. Make sure a different dropper is used for each of the liquid samples to avoid
contamination.
3. Observe and record the appearance of the drops of the liquid samples on wax paper.
 Liquid and blade on the surface
1. Place some of the liquid samples in a beaker or a wide mouth glass jar.
2. Carefully place a blade on the surface.
3. Did the blade float on the surface of the liquids? Record observations

D. Result

Liquid and drops on wax paper

Liquid Observation
Kerosene When the drops of the kerosene put in the
plastic cover, the drops spread out on plastic
cover.
Ethyl Alcohol When the drops of ethyl alcohol put on the
plastic cover, the drop of ethyl alcohol spread a
little unlike the kerosene and has a larger
diameter than water.
Water When the drop of water put on the plastic
cover, the drops of water forms spherical shape
and has a small diameter than ethyl alcohol.

Liquid and blade on the surface

Liquid Observation
Kerosene When the blade put on the kerosene, the blade
immediately sinks.
Ethyl Alcohol When the blade put on the ethyl alcohol, the
blade floats.
Water When the blade put on the water, the blade
floats.

Comb
Liquid Observation
Kerosene The flow of the kerosene was straight and
doesn’t have attraction on the comb.
Ethyl Alcohol The flow of the ethyl alcohol are also straight
like kerosene and there’s no attraction occur
between comb and ethyl alcohol.
Water The water bend because the attraction occurs
between water and comb.
E. Discussion and Conclusion

The blade floats and sank in the given liquid sample due to their differences in the strength of
their surface tension. The water has greater surface tension so, when the blade put on the surface of
the water it will float because the blade doesn’t have enough force to pierce the surface of the water.
In contrast, when the blade put on the surface of kerosene and ethanol the blade sank because their
surface tension was lesser because there are surfactants that reduce their surface and the blade has
enough force to go through on the surface of the water.

The flow of the water bends when it is closer to the charged comb because there’s an attraction
occurred between water and charged comb while in the flow of kerosene and ethanol there’s no
attraction occurred.

When the drop of water put in the plastic cover, the drop of water forms spherical shape and has
small diameter while the drop of ethanol spread a little when it put on the surface of the plastic cover
and the drop of the kerosene spread out over the surface of the plastic cover.

Therefore, we conclude that the properties of liquid is the main reason why the blades sank and
float in the given liquid sample, why was the given liquid, form spherical shape, spread a little and
spread out when it put in the plastic cover, and why was the liquid attract and doesn’t attract by the
charged comb, all of these happens because of the different properties of given liquid sample.

F. Recommendation

In order to have a good and successful experiment, the materials needed should be collected
completely. All of the materials that supposed to be used in process must be prepared and in a well-
functional state. The one who will perform the experiment should wear the proper laboratory attire
and also they need to know the process of the experiment to prevent mistake and delays.
