HALF AND FULL BRIDGE INVERTERS

AIM: To simulate single phase half and full bridge inverters and 3-phase inverter with various
loads.
APPARATUS: MATLAB Software.
THEORY: An inverter changes DC input voltage to a symmetric AC output voltage of desired
magnitude and frequency. The output voltage waveforms of ideal inverters should be sinusoidal.
But, however practical waveforms contain several harmonics.

Half-wave inverter consists of 2 switches with antiparallel diodes. When one switch is on,the
other will be off simultaneously. The output varies from +V/2 to -V/2, based on this switching,
thus producing an AC output. But, in case of R-L load, the output current doesn’t follow the
voltage waveform. This is because the inductor gets charged when switch S1 is on and it doesn’t
allow any sudden change in current.

In full wave bridge inverter, there will be 4 switches which are unidirectional (we take IGBT as
switch). 2 switches will be on simultaneously and the other two will be off. So, the current flows
through the 2 switches and the resultant output will be +V in first instant and –V in the other.
Diodes come into picture in case of R-L load.

PROBLEM:

A voltage source inverter is switched to provide a 50Hz square wave AC output voltage across a
load of 2ohms. Given a source voltage of 100V, simulate and analyze the circuit. Find rms
voltage, rms current.

PROBLEM:2:

Now, if an inductor of 25mH is connected to the resistor in series in above problem, what
happens to the output voltage and current waveforms? Perform the experiment and observe the
difference in the output waveforms and also find the stress on each of the switches.

FULL BRIDGE INVERTER WITH RLC LOAD:
PROBLEM.3

A 3-phase bridge inverter delivers power to a star connected resistive load of 10ohm/phase from
a 100V dc source. Determine the rms value of load current, switch current and load power for
180 degree mode of conduction.
OBSERVATIONS:

1. The IGBT, which we use as a switch here, allows current to flow only in one direction.
2. The output current follows the output voltage when the load is resistive.
3. Diodes are useful only if the load is inductive.
4. For an inductive load, the current can’t change immediately with voltage. So, the inductor
acts as a current source even if the voltage source is turned off.
5. Inductor acts as a current source till it gets completely discharged and the path of that
current is through the diodes, because IGBT is unidirectional.
6. At any instant of time, 3 switches will be on because of 180degree mode of conduction in
3-phase inverter.

RESULT:

Thus, the half and full bridge inverters are simulated in matlab along with 3-phase
inverter involving different loads. Also, the output waveforms are observed with and without
inductor in the load.
