How to choose the right testing instruments for your laboratory

Choosing the right test instruments for your laboratory becomes really challenging
sometimes especially when you have many other issues to deal with in your plant like
production, finance or logistics.
Laboratory instruments are capital expenditure, so taking the right decision while choosing
them is critical since they cannot be replaced for a long time.
While choosing the testing instruments the below points should be kept in mind :
1. You should be clear with the product that you wish to test, the testing requirement should
be clearly understood viz. what is to be tested.

2. The test parameters have to be clearly defined. This can be done by taking the test
specifications from your buyer or asking him about the standard that needs to be followed.

3. You should have the LATEST copy of the standard purchased online, as many a times the
standards available with you might be outdated.

4. The standard has to be thoroughly read and you need to find out what type of testing
instrument is recommended in the standard and the specifications thereof. List them down.

5. Look for a manufacturer of testing instruments ( not a trader ) who can provide you the
instruments matching your specifications and also service them for years to come.

While buying testing instruments it is always advisable to visit the supplier as it gives you an
insight into their reliability and ensures a lasting relationship. You may carry samples with you
to test them first hand and evaluate the results.
Word of caution : Do not go for low cost Chinese products as product reliability is also a
challenge as they do not follow standards and simply copy known brands. Getting spares for
such products is always an issue & your investment gets wasted with no returns.
