PROJECT TITLE

Saving bodies of water from pollution through the use of floating bin

II.PROPONENT

Two Australian surfer namely Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski has invented a floating
bin which they called as “seabin” that automatically sips rubbish floating on the water into it just
like a vacuum cleaner. The Seabin sips and sucks in water and rubbish, which gets caught in a
catch bag filter. Ceglinski and Turton spent almost four years in creating this “seabin”. They
want to create this product to end the spell of polluted bodies of water and also to educate people
about the damage being done every day to the oceans. Ceglinski and Turton together with their
team mates, Sascha Chapman and Sergio Ruiz Halpern took a risk to let foreign correspondent
join them for what turned out to be a critical week in their journey of turning their dream into a
reality. For Pete, it's been very personal and one that has seen him spend every cent he has, but
because of his strong determination they had able to accomplish this project called the “Seabin
Project”

III.PROJECTCOST

The Seabin is a floating trash bin made from recycled plastic. It uses a water pump to
suck water and trash into its interior, where garbage and other nasty fluids can be filtered out of
the water through a natural fiber bag. Clean(er) water is then pumped out. In creating a modified
floating bin it must include the following materials:

 Wilkins bottle (one gallon)

 PVC pipe (one inch diameter) -350.00 Php
 Battery (nine volts) – 55.00 Php
 Battery snap – 165.00 Php
 DC motor (twelve volts, seven-seven-five power) – 50.00 Php
 Switch – 30.00 Php
 Electrical and Teflon tape – 30.00 Php
 Electrical Wire – 18.00 Php
 Impeller
 Glue stick- 10.00 Php
 Net – 30.00 Php
 Hacksaw and cutter blade– 105.00 Php

The estimated amount for this project is 1,000.00 Php but the actual price is 800.00 Php
because some of the materials needed are already available.

IV.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Water is essential to life. Yet water pollution is one of the most serious ecological threats
we face today. Water pollution are varied and depend on what chemicals are dumped and in
which location. In the Philippines alone, chemical pollution is quickly taking its number on our
limited supply of fresh water. The ocean is filled with eight million tonnes of rubbish-enough to
fill five carrier bags for every foot of coastline on the planet. Due to pollutants that has different
toxic and negative effects that can hurt human health and the environment, resulting in high
economic cost for both the population and government entities. The concept is to complement
the more expensive option of using trash boats, vessels that around harbours scooping up rubbish
with nets built into them. A device called seabin or floating bin has been innovated as a cheaper
and more convenient tool to lessen garbage dumped by individuals and dangerous chemicals
legally or illegally dumped by manufacturing industries, health centers, schools and market
places(untreated raw sewage, industrial wastewater, agricultural wastewater, domestic
wastewater, Non-point sources such as rain and other more sources of water pollution). Also to
avoid destruction of ecosystem (the interaction of living things in a place, depending on each
other for life) because many areas are now being affected by careless human pollution, and this
pollution is coming back to hurt humans in many ways. Lastly by the help of this device it makes
a person job to be more easier and faster in terms of collecting the garbage in the coastlines.

V.OBJECTIVES

Imagine a world where a liter of water costs two or three times as much as a liter of
gasoline because our water supply has become so poisoned that there are very few sources of
freshwater left. People think that it is impossible to happen but it might actually, in the near
future. The following are some of the Objectives of this floating or the so called “Seabin
project”:

 Aims to lessen the rubbish that are being collected in the coastlines
 Aims to protect marine organisms in disruption of food chains
 Aims to persuade people in disposing their waste properly
 Aims to be a much more affordable device to collect garbage;
 And aims to resolve the problem in Water pollution.

VI.REVIEW OF LITERATURE

The V5 Seabin unit is a floating debris interception device designed to be installed in the
water of marinas, yacht clubs, ports and any water body with a calm environment and services
available. The Seabin is not designed or suitable for open water bodies where boat traffic and
large currents or waves may have an adverse effect on the performance of the Seabin.
The Seabin is estimated at catching an estimated 1.5 Kgs of floating debris per day,
weather and debris volumes depending. This equates to over a half ton of debris per year for each
Seabin. The Seabin is installed in a specific “Debris problem area” in the marina on a floating
dock and then because of this strategic positioning, the wind and the currents bring the debris
directly to the Seabin. The catch bag can hold up to 12Kgs of debris and it is advised that the
Seabins are to be checked twice per day and the catch bag changed as needed.
A percentage of oil can be captured with simple oil absorption technology adapted
custom for the Seabins catch bag. As the technology develops, the amount of oils the Seabins
will capture will increase in parallel.
The Seabin is powered by a small submersible water pump underneath the Seabin which
uses either 110V or 220V. Extensive testing with a 12V pump found it unsuitable in performance
and the solar capabilities much more difficult than using the 110/220V pump. The water pump
may be run by cleaner power options such as solar, wind, wave or turbine depending on the
location, current technology and services available.

VII.METHODOLOGY

First, test all equipments if working. Followed by making a blueprint of the actual device.
Then, start creating the modified Water pump using: DC Motor, Battery, Wire, PVC Pipes, and
impeller. Assemble the PVC pipes, then fit the washer through the DC Motor, next make an
improvised impeller, and connect the adapter connection then install everything inside the pipe.
Second, proceed in making the bin by cutting the lower portion of the bottle then put the net
where the waste are trapped then attach the whole bin in a pipe then connect the modified water
pump to the pipe and finalize the details of the floating bin. Lastly, test the device if it is
successfully working.
