TB PHENOMENON

Mother Teresa once said, "The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but
rather the feeling of being unwanted." but is it, these days? TB has been getting out of hand these
past few years. Based on the data gathered by CDC, ¼ of the population in the world is infected by
Tuberculosis, technically 1.8 billion people. 10 million people were infected by TB, to make matters
worse, 1.6 million of them died in 2017 alone, making TB the leading infectious killer in the world.
Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease and potentially severe contagious disease that
mainly affects the lungs, but can also affect the rest of your body. It is characterized by the growth of
nodules in the tissues. The body's immune system may hold back the disease, but it does not kill it.
Some people might not develop active TB, one-half of the carriers will have TB for their lifetime. The
bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB), Mycobacterium tuberculosis, was announced by Dr. Robert
Koch on March 24, 1882.
Tuberculosis was present for at least 15,000 years. The shreds of evidence were found in the
spines of the mummies back to 2400-3400 B.C. Despite its frequency at the time, its cause was
obscure.
Tuberculosis is curable and preventable. We want TB out of our system! Person infected with
tuberculosis should undergo oral medication for at least six months for the medicines to kill all the TB
bacteria. The medication shall be done completely, failure to comply the said duration, the TB
bacteria are still in your body then it could become seriously ill, develop drug-resistant TB or pass TB
on to others. Remember TB can be fatal but can be cured. CDC and some other organizations are
making their way towards making the definition of Tuberculosis, "history".
