UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● The Wants v.s. Needs lesson is part of the unit where students learn more about economics. Students will
learn more about the difference between basic wants and needs.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Given examples of wants and needs, students will place felt pieces of different wants and needs on a felt
board and be able to distinguish the difference between wants and needs; this will be assessed by a
rubric and any student who does not make a 3 or higher will require additional instruction.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● K.03 Distinguish between wants and needs.

MATERIALS:
● Felt board(1 per group)
● Felt pieces of different wants
● Felt pieces of different needs
● White board
● Dry erase marker

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● Key concepts are for students to improve their differentiation skills.
● Differentiation
● The lesson will build on previous differentiation lessons.
● For students who may need further instructions, they may need to do a worksheet as well.
● This lesson can be used with all genders; it is gender neutral.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: “ Today we are going to talk about wants and needs.” “Needs are things that we need for
survival such as food, water, shelter and clothes. Wants are something that we don’t necessarily need, but
we want them because they would be nice or fun to have.” “So guys can y'all give me an example of
something that y'all really want?” Let the students respond. “See you may want these things, but they are
not necessary to our survival. We don’t need toys to survive. Water keeps us alive and hydrated. Food
keeps us from being hungry. Shelter keeps us safe from storms and clothes keep us warm when it is cold
outside.” (10 minutes)
● Procedures: Begin by giving the students examples of different wants and needs and write it on the
board(5 minutes). Divide the students into groups of 3-4 (2 minutes). Give each group a felt board with a
bag of felt cutouts that are pictures of wants and needs(1 minute). Give students instructions on what to
do, which is to put the correct pictures under the correct category(2 minutes). Let students work in their
groups to do the activity(15 minutes).
● Closure: Go over the categories and what pictures should have been put in each category as a class(5
minutes.)

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● Go around and look at all of the students boards to see how many they got correct. If they got 3 out of 5
correct then they will not need further instruction(5 minutes).

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master
the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However,
modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.
