Continuing Professional Development

1. Explain the methods of professional development below

Professional Description
Development
Method
Induction training This is when someone starts a new job and
they are taught how to do certain things
mainly by the business.Inductions lasts for
different lengths of time, these can be 1 day
or a few weeks, this is depending on what is
being learnt and to what standard. Induction
training could include a tour of the building,
showing you the different departments. Also
people who you need to know ill be introduced
to you. Sometimes part of this induction is
working for short periods of time in different
departments in order to understand how the
business works. This induction will definitely
include information on things such as fire
exits, where you work, and toilets etc (things
that will be either used immediately/every
day, or that needs to be known for health and
safety). All of this information could be passed
on through talking with a manager or through
a presentation.

Performance This is a meeting that an employee and line

appraisal manager have usually once or twice a year. In
this meeting they Talk about what they have
done well and what they have not done so
well, also they will set new targets to meet by
the next appraisal and review previously set
targets. The employee also gives there
opinions and can request training on
something if they feel they need help
understanding it, some business also let
employees have trials in other departments to
see what it is like working there, so this can
be requested at these meetings.

On the job/ off the Training on the job is when you are working
job training and being trained at the same time. This could
be through shadowing someone to see how
they do their job.
This is usually cheaper for the business as it is
done internally. It also allows them to pass
down knowledge from more senior employees
as otherwise when they retire or leave for
different jobs this knowledge leaves with
them.

Training off the job is the opposite of training

on the job. It is when you are trained whilst
not doing your day to day job and is in a
different place to where you work. this is
usually there to teach you things they
business cant or to a higher level, one
example is a first aid course if the business
needs you to be a first aider. this would be
done off the job as the business can not
legally teach you this and call you a first
order, it has to be trained and examined by a
third party. these course can be based in
many different places, if this is the case then
the business usually pays for thins such as
travel and accommodation, and you are
usually payed for this time taken out for
training courses.

Coaching and This is when a person with experience in

mentoring something is then teaching someone els (or a
group of people) that thing. This however is a
very focused form of teaching and they are
there to offer support and feedback more.
Feedback is usually given after the “coach”
has given the person they are teaching the
knowledge and tools to do it, and is now
watching them to make sure that they have
grasped the knowledge and fully understand
it. Due to this increased attention whilst
coaching the people being coached usually
come out knowing more about the subject
(and even if they don't the monitoring by the
coach will pick up on this and help people to
understand it better).

Graduate training This is basically when a business recruits

programme people who have just recently finished
University and try to basically fast track them
to a high positioned job. this is done through
lots of different training techniques, mainly
working in many different departments for
long periods of time. The length of these
programs varies from business to business, as
to the requirements to get on it. For example,
in Morrisons graduate program, you pick wich
are you want to eventually work in, then you
need a 2:1 degree (in anything), long with
some other requirements which vary between
departments (such as a drivers license), and
they you can apply to be on the two year long
programme.

Management This is when people have been promoted to a

training management role for usualy the first time.
This often means they may lack some of the
people skills needed for a managerial role. So
this training gives them the knowledge of how
to deal with certain situations in an
appropriate manner, and how to deal with
general pressures and new responsibilities
they have as a manager. Also they will
obviously be developing their people skills to
better deal with the people they now manage.

Secondments This is when you are placed into a different

department to the one you work in. This is to
allow you to learn more about the business
and how it runs. This helps with your normal
job as it gives more understanding as to what
others are doing so the process you go
through now makes more sense. For example
someone in sales working in the warehouse to
pack things to send to customers, this is vital
to know as otherwise you may be asking
people to perform impossible tasks or make
easily avoidable mistakes. this is also useful
as if someone is off ill or for any other reason
and something needs to be done urgently then
people who have gone been in the other
departments can go and help in order to avoid
things such as delayed orders going to
customers.

Shadowing This is when a new employee will join a

business and in order to train them on what to
do they will place them in the hands of an
experienced member of staff. This staff
member will then go about their day to day
job and explain everything that they do to the
new person. Throughout the day (or however
long the shadowing goes on for) the new
employee will most likely be given plenty of
opportunities to try to do the things they have
seen the staff member do. The point of this is
that it is easier to learn something if it is
explained and shown to you at the same time
as theory is often different from reality. by the
end of this shadowing the new employee
hould have a better idea of how to do their job
and will need little more assistance. This is
also a cheap way of training someone as you
already have the experienced employee
working there so by placing someone next to
them the only thing this may effect is their
efficiency while the shadowing takes place.

E-Learning This is trining that is completed online. There

are many training courses that can just be
taken online meaning the business does not
have to pay for any travel for them employee
they only have to pay to do the course and
have an internet connection and the employee
can get trained from work.

Vocational & This is when you learn in a practical way how

professional to get the skills for specific jobs that require
courses them. for example you need to be a qualified
electrition in order to start a job as one. So
this training ensures that you gain the specific
skills necessary for that job in a practical way.
This will then give yu the correct qualifications
needed to be a practicing electrition.

Job rotation This is when an employee may get board of

doing the same job for a very long time. So
naturally their attention fades as well as their
motivation. In order to combat this business
have job rotation to stop employees getting
board of their job. This works by allowing two
employees who have different jobs swap jobs
for a specified amount of time in order to try
something new out and combat a lack of
efficiency from board employees. This can be
basically free as no additional costs should be
created as the employees will be on the same
wage and the work that needs to be done
should still get done.

Lifelong learning This is when a business (and yourself) makes

sure you are constantly learning new things
weather this is a skill relating to the
business/your job or just a transferable skill
that is useful to know. A good reason for this
is things such as ICT and technology in
general, this is because this sector is
constantly evolving and growing meaning year
by year knowledge gets outdated sooner and
sooner. So a business wouls want to make
sure that in areas like this everyone is
constantly being updated in order to benefit
the business and themselves to further
personal life and their professional career.
This obviously also includes when an
employee request training on something they
do not understand and would like to expand
their knowledge on.

Retraining This is when people are trained in something

els in order for them to do a different job. This
could happen if an employee is re deployed
after redundancies and is now in a completely
different job. So because it is so different the
employee will have to be fully trained on how
to do this job so that they could work and not
be redundant. This will mean that the wage of
the employee should stay the same, however
the cost of training them could be high
depending on the methods used.

2. Explain which of these methods you may need to

achieve your career aim and why

E-Learning:

I think that to achieve my career aim i will need E-learning, this

is because after going to university i will probably not have much
money left to start paying for transport and accommodation to
lots of different forms of training, so if i need addition
qualifications that i can get over the internet that is how i will get
them. It is not only less expensive but also very efficient as it is
done from my house instantly over the internet.

Induction training:

I think that to achieve my career aim i will need induction

training, this is because when i get my desired job i will have had
no work experience in that business. So i would definitely need
induction training to help me learn about where everything is,
how the business works, who everyone is etc. This will all be to
help me be better at my job once i properly start it.

Shadowing:

I think that to achieve my career aim i will need shadowing, this

is because when i get the job that i want after university i would
have had no practical experience in that job role only theoretical.
So in order to better understand what i do day to day and how to
do it it would be very beneficial to shadow an experienced
member of staff as they will be able to teach me how to do the
job properly and efficiently.
