The text book that I decided to review was “Interactive Text” by California Science, this

textbook is labeled for students grade 1. However, I believe it is geared towards students 1-3rd

grade due to the type of activities provided, vocab used, and more especially if used for ELL

students. This text book is colorful and full of pictures and labels. Each page has multiple

picture and the labels on the pictures are direct and point out specific parts. This is useful to ELL

students because many times there are images but no labels, therefore, if the image was to show

the root of a plant but had an entire plant showing, a ELL student would not be sure what part of

the image to look at. The books pace is normal and has checkpoints for understanding, the

students will be able to use these to check their comprehension.

The good parts about the lesson that I chose are that it begins with a picture and a words

definition. This is helpful to a student because they are able to read the word and its definition

and then correlate it with a picture. However, the problem with this is that the photos alone do

not match the word. For example, as shown by Macmillan (p. 15) there is one image with 3 dogs,

if an ELL student were to look at this image without seeing the definition they would

automatically think, “puppy”, however, the text book used this image as a “mammal”. Another

problem that I can see occurring, stated by Macmillan (p. 17) are the guiding questions, one of

them is “name a bird” however, the book only talks about one type of bird, which is a duck,

therefore the only answer that could be is a duck.

Overall, the text book is a great tool that teachers can use to guide students, this textbook

is very useful. The pictures are large and clear and even have labels on them. The book does not

need any supplementing in my opinion because it has all the pictures, guiding questions and

more. The book would be a great tool for 1 st grade teachers and then for 1-3rd grade teachers of

ELL students because of the images used and their effective labels.
