Designated Term Pastor - Job Description

The bylaws of Second Congregational Church, UCC state that our pastor will
become a member of the church and will have all the rights and privileges that
accrue to a voting member in good standing. They will be the spiritual leader of the
congregation. Our Pastor will have the welfare of the church and the pastoral care
of the members and friends of the congregation as a special charge. They will
preach the Gospel, oversee all phases of the worship, and administer the
Sacraments. They will be an ex-officio member of all standing boards and
committees.
Accountability:
● Our pastor is accountable to the congregation through the Church Council
and the Board of Deacons.
● Our pastor's performance will be evaluated annually by the Board of
Deacons. The review will be based on fulfillment of the responsibilities set
in this document as well as goals mutually agreed upon annually by the
Pastor and the Board of Deacons.
Pastoral and Liturgical Ministries:
● Plan and conduct worship and special services, in coordination with the
Deacons, Music Directors, Worship Team, and Pizza & Prayer Team.
● Officiate at weddings, funerals, and memorial services.
● Administer the sacraments.
● Oversee pastoral care, including premarital and grief counseling, visitations
of the sick and shut-in, and other visitation as may be needed.
● Develop and implement, in collaboration with the boards, committees and
teams of the church, programs designed to live into God's mission for
Second Church – with a special focus on our four key missions:
o Community Meal Program
o Pizza & Prayer
o Community Speaker Series
o Family Promise North Shore
● Guide the congregation through difficult conversations and conflict
resolution.
Administration:

● Help transition the church and congregation to a new pastoral staffing
structure.
● Delegate tasks to a Pastoral Assistant and encourage greater ownership and
participation from the broader congregation.
● Guide the church leadership through the process of updating the bylaws.
● Responsible for supervision of the Pastoral Assistant, Parish Administrator,
Music Directors, Nursery Supervisor, Custodian/Sexton, including annual
goal setting and evaluation. Responsible for supervision of a seminarian, in
applicable.
● Assist the Boards and committees in the development of appropriate short
and long-range plans and programs.
● Participate with the Prudential Board in the development and
implementation of stewardship programs.

Outreach Ministries:
● Assist in the development and implementation of outreach programs and
activities in conjunction with the boards, committees, and teams of the
church.
● Represent the congregation at community events and multi-faith activities,
as appropriate.
● Actively seek potential new members, as well reach out to past attendees,
with the goal of drawing more people into the church.

Christian Education:
● Work with the Christian Education Board and Church School teachers to
assure the delivery of a meaningful Church School Program.
● Prepare or facilitate a Children's Message in worship.
● Develop and participate in a Confirmation program for young people and
mentors in collaboration with the Diaconate and Christian Education Board.
● Organize youth ministry events and encourage participation in the missions
and ministries of the church.
● Facilitate or lead (as appropriate) spiritual growth opportunities including,
but not limited to, as Bible and book studies.

Professional Growth:
● Maintain a program of professional development and growth with the
guidance and support of the Diaconate.

Tenure:
● Our Designated Term Pastor’s call is for a period of three to five years, with
the option to become the settled pastor upon mutual agreement with the
Congregation.
● The Designated Term Pastor’s call may be terminated on 90 days notice in
writing by either party.
