INTRODUCTION

An organization is a group of people working together for achieving common objectives which is already
defined by the organization. To run the organization properly without any wastage of resources, proper structure
and hierarchy is to be properly defined in an organization.

An organization is an entity where two or more persons work together to achieve a goal or a common
purpose. If there is an organization, there must be some people who work as a whole for a common purpose, so
there must be a defined purpose. If an organization does not have any purpose, it will not survive in the long
run. To achieve the purpose by using people, the processes are needed.

The organizational study was conducted at Torry Harris (pvt) Ltd, Eramallor. Torry Harris is committed to
value addition through an exclusive network of bridges across the ocean. Bridges that strategically link the
entire journey, from the point of catch to the point of consumption. The Torry Harris operates today across
USA, Europe, and Asia. Over the years, the company has earned a reputation for high quality and strong
customer focus. Torry Harris offers a wide range of products ranging from shrimps to squid to cuttle fish to
lobsters and crabs. At Torry Harris, they believe that the future of the sea food industry is centred on a simple
theme: customer service – Reliable, need based service to sea food buyers around the world. Torry Harris
begins by identifying processors close to the point of catch, working across the Indian coastlines. The company
also works in Dubai, South East Asian Countries and Vietnams.

1.1 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

 To acquire the knowledge regarding the functional as well as the managerial aspects of the
company.
 To have an understanding on the profile of Torry Harris and various activities.
 To get an idea about the organizations various departments, especially HR department
 To get the feel of actual working environment.

1.2 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

An organization may be considered as a productive and planned system of individuals, deliberately designed
and coordinated for achieving common goals effectively. Every organization is a purposeful system, it is
created and made functional for seeking the purpose or objective in the minds of the individuals or groups of
individuals involved in it, and it is only for realizing objectives that various resources are mobilized and utilized
through purpose because the organization operates in an environment, which is outside and is constituted by
various significant forces. Some of these are competitors, customers, vendors, financial institution, regulatory
institution, and the government.

The main characteristics of the environment affecting its structure are environment complexity, uncertainty and
time horizon. The study aims at gaining knowledge and awareness on each department of the organization.
Organization study on all the department of an organization will definitely lead to gain more knowledge about
the functional aspects in details. A study on all the departments of an organization helps to improve the existing
condition and thereby giving an opportunity for overall improvement of an organization.

the details collected from each department. Each and every activity of the department is studied carefully with
the available data. This study is beneficial to the future managers as they are put into real life situations. A study
on the entire department can help to improve the process and there by overall improvements in the company
performance can be made.

1.4 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The main limitation of this study is:

 Time limit – To understand an organization and its working, the period of one month is not enough. So
that time was most important limiting factor in this study.
 Lack of data–Some of the data are treated as confidential hence the researcher could not get the details
of the same. The organization financial details were not provided.

2. INDUSTRY PROFILE
2.1 SEAFOOD INDUSRY IN INDIA

Seafood includes any form of food taken from the sea. The seafood is any form of marine life regarded as food
by human beings. The Seafood include fish, octopus, shellfish, shrimp, lobster, sea cucumber, sea urchins,
edible sea plants such as some seaweeds and microalgae, also seafood, and are widely eaten around the world,
especially in Asia (see the category of sea vegetables). In North America, although not generally, in the United
Kingdom. The term “Seafood” is applied also to fresh water organisms eaten by humans, so all edible aquatic
life may be referred to as seafood.

Marine products exports contribute a significant share in increasing India’s foreign exchange resource. Till the
end of 1960, export of India marine products mainly limited to dried items like dried fish and dried shrimp.
Although frozen item was present in the export basket from 1953 onwards in negligible quantities, it was only
since 1961 the export of dried marine products was overtaken by export of frozen items leading to a steady
progress in export earnings. With the devaluation of Indian currency in 1966 the export of frozen and canned
items registered a significant rise.

GLOBAL SCENARIO

India with a fishery production of nearly 13 m tonnes a year is now the 3rd largest fish producing country in the
world. However, it is ranked 16th interims of seafood exports with a 4% share in global marine trade. Seafood is
perhaps the largest international commodity with fish trade exceeding US$60 billion per year. Almost 200
countries supply fish and seafood products to the global market place consisting of more than 800 commercially
important species of fish, crustaceans and moll scans. Through the current day, the supply of fish has kept up
not only with a rapidly increasing population but also with increases in per capita consumption. However global

4
capture is fisheries are at their maximum sustainable yield and while aquaculture to grow, it will have difficulty
keeping pace with global demand.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO), consumption of fish and fishery
products increased from approximately 38 million tons in 1960 to 137 million tons by 2003, an increase of 2.0
percent representing an annual growth rate of 3.0 percent. This rate of growth is significantly higher than the 1.8
percent rate of growth of the global population. While a portion of the increase in demand has been fuelled by
population growth another factor is that a greater concentration of people are living in coastal settlements with
40 percent of the world’s population now living within 100 kilometre of the sea fish production has kept pace
not only with population growth, but also with growth in consumption as per capita fish consumption has
increased from about 12.7 kilograms per year in 1960 to about 21.7 kilograms per year in 2003.While most of
the increased demand has been met by growth in capture, or “wild” fisheries the last twenty year have been the
rapid expansion of global aquaculture.

INDIAN SCENARIO

India is the third largest fish- producing nation in the world, exporting to more than 10 countries. It has the
potential to grow further in view of the growing demand in trading blocs such as the European Union, United
States, Canada and Middle East. There has been huge transformation in the Indian seafood industry over the last
few years many of which have not been highlighted or marketed in the international arena in 1997. The EU
banned Indian Seafood, citing lack of hygienic and python-sanitary measures in the industry; this was a
landmark as thereon India has come a very long way. The challenge was India spearheaded quality control and
HACCP was put into place. Today we have excellent facilities, competitive labour and our infrastructure is
catching up fast. The Indian coastal Eco-regions with – 8, 129 kms of sea-coast, the Indian seafood Industry is
the 3rd largest seafood market in the world. India has the largest number of EU approved processing plants in
the world with a 3m tone annual capacity, however only 20% is being currently utilized. It is estimated that by
2010, 25m would be invested in this sector by the local market alone. The MPEDA and Government of India
are currently focused on enhancing production and boosting exports to make India the top global seafood
exporter. The aquaculture industry has been identified as a sunrise area; the potential is impressive. India has

5
yet emerged as the 2nd largest world producer of farmed fish according to FAO but its total production is one
twentieth of China which is the number one exporter.

India still promotes Black Tiger rather than vannamei unlike other countries. Black tiger is a high valued
product unlike vannamei. Apart from black tigers India has cultivated 30000 tonnes of fresh water scampi.
There is an immense potential for shrimp farming. India is also one of the countries where eco-friendly
cultivation is going on. We have small farms with low stocking densities, low use of chemicals and sustainable
practices. The rising demand for seafood and other marine products will lead to collapse of today’s commercial
fish stock by the year 2050, unless better management practices of sustainable developments are in place.

STATE SCENARIO

Kerala is the only region in India where fish resources are rich and no other state possesses fish workers as
intelligent and work conscious as those in Kerala. Kerala is one of the leading maritime states in India. The state
of Kerala situated in the south west part of peninsular India has a slender stretch of land with a long surf beaten
coast on the western side and a lush green mountain range on the eastern side. The marine resources of Kerala
are obtained from a coastline of 560km. The state has a geographical area of 388635km. The Kerala coast
popularly known as Malabar Coast from very early times provides one of the richest fishing zones in the world.

The coast of Kerala constitutes approximately 10 percent of India’s total coastline. The coast line of 560km and
the Exclusive Economic Zone extends up to 200 nautical miles far beyond the continental shelf, which covers
an area of 218536 sq km provide opportunity in traditional fishing in inshore waters from ages. The continental
shelf area is 39139 sq km the area within the 18m depth range accounts for 5000sq km. The marine potential of
Kerala is enormous and only a small part of it is currently being exploited. In Kerala the marine waters offer a
very lucrative fishery, south west monsoon coupled with north-westerly winds and the oceanic currents because
upwelling along the coast which brings the nutrient rich deep waters to the surface, with flourishing primary
production and followed by a good fishery. Kerala coast has major fisheries of the shrimps, cuttle fish, sardines,
mackerels, anchovies, soles sharks, rays etc. On an average of 6.02 lakh tones of marine fish is produced
annually by the state.

6
A lot of changes have taken place in the fisheries sector of Kerala. Primarily those happened in the catching
strategy of which the most important one is the mechanization process. As a result the marine fisheries sector of
Kerala was divided into two sectors, namely traditional and modern. The modern sector was introduced in 1953
at Neendakara-Shakthikulangara region under the initiative of indo-Norwegian project accordingly are
mechanically operated new boats new fishing nets and the Norwegian model ice factory with a cold storage
plant.INP has introduced new methods of fish processing and forms of distribution. The successful trawl carried
out at the fishing village of Kannamali in Ernakulum during 1979-80 attracted the fisherman community.

OVERVIEW OF SEAFOOD INDUSTRY

India is blessed with a coastline of over 8118kms, 2.02 million sq.km of EEZ, 0.5 million sq, km. Continental
shelf estimated to have exploitable resources to the tune of 4.41 million tons of which about 3.40 million tons
are presently exploited. The estimated potential brackish water area suitable for shrimp farming is about 1.2
million hectare of which around 14% is utilized for farming, producing about 5 lakh tons of shrimp and scampi
which is going to the export basket. India’s total fishery production was 9.58 million tons from both marine and
inland during 2012-2014, in which inland sector contributed 6.14 million tons. India’s seafood industry has
become one of the leading suppliers of quality seafood processing plants that follow quality control regimes
complaint to stringent international regulatory requirements.

Seafood exports from India during the year 2014-2015 reached to an all time high of US$5.5 Billion. 106
countries in the world taste Indian seafood, SE Asia, EU, USA, Japan, China and Middle East being the major
markets. India is the second largest aquaculture producer in the world, largest exporter of shrimps to Europe and
the 4th largest exporter of shrimps to Japan.

Frozen shrimp holds the major share in India’s export earnings and frozen fish is the principal export item in
terms of quantity. Frozen cephalopods are also contributing a major share in the export earnings.

7
MARKET STRUCTURE

Before 1960, the markets of Indian marine products were largely confined to neighbouring countries like
Srilanka, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Singapore etc., when our exports were dominated by dried items. This
situation changed with the development of technology/modernization; dried products gave way to canned and
frozen items. The products shift also resulted in market shift. More sophisticated and affluent markets viz.
Japan, USA, Europe, Australia etc., became our important buyers. Several sea food processing units with
modern machinery for freezing and production of value-added products were set up at all important centres in
the country for export processing.

For a long time, USA was the principal buyer for Torry Harris Ltd frozen shrimp, but after 1977, Japan emerged
as the principal buyer of the product, followed by the European countries. Japan retained its position till 2001-
2002 as the single largest buyer for Torry Harris Ltd. Marine products accounting for about 31% of the total
export value. During the year 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 USA emerged as the European Union has collectively
become the largest importer of Indian marine products and it retained its position since 2005-2006. During
2006-2007 Europe accounted for a share of 33% in value terms followed by Japan 16.18%, USA 16.12%, China
13.48%, South East Asia 7.3%, Middle East 4.44% and other minor countries 9%. Exports to USA dropped by
20% compared to the previous year due to the dumping issues in US on shrimp.

FUTURE OUTLOOKS OF TORRY HARRIS

FAO and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) forecast a net increase in world seafood demand
through 2025. Increase will come from a combination of population growth and per capita seafood consumption
an increase of approximately eight percent. The biggest increase is expected in China where IFPRI forecasts per
capita consumption growing to 35.9kgs by 2020, an increase of approximately 10kgs over the current level.
While the demand forecast for increased seafood consumption is bullish the availability of supply is far less
certain. Under current fishing regimes the potential worldwide harvest from marine capture fisheries is no more
than the current level of 90 million tonnes, but even this level cannot be sustained indefinitely. It is difficult to
estimate the potential increases that could be achieved through a combination of improved management,
reduced wastage from discards and post-harvest losses and recovery of depleted stock. An optimistic estimate is
that under much improved management conditions capture fisheries might yield an additional 15 million tonnes
over the next 20 years. Thus, in the most optimistic scenario, where the oceans are wisely managed and
8
aquaculture flourishes in a sustainable manner, the worlds demand for fish will not be met of concern is that the
optimistic scenario proposed by FAO is unrealistic based on progress in global fisheries management to date.

Following are the three primary concerns that are not currently being addressed:

 Even if effective management were introduced immediately, if will take time for the depleted stocks to
recover.
 Given current fishery management regimes and the difficulty in achieving multi-lateral consensus and
enforcement action, over- fishing is likely to get worse.
 Higher real prices for fish will continue to create financial incentives for further investment in
industrial scale fishing.

AQUACULTURE

Indian Aquaculture is highly promising and has grown over six and half fold in the last two decades with
freshwater aquaculture contributing over 95% of the total aquaculture production.

India’s aquaculture production can be classified into freshwater and brackish water production. The
development support provided by the Indian Government through a network of 429 Fish Farmers Development
Agencies (FFDA) and 39 Brackish water Fish Farmers Development Agencies (BFDAs) have been the
principal vehicles for the development and growth of fresh water and coastal aquaculture.

The three Indian major carps, namely catla, rohu (labeorohita) and mrigal contribute as much as 87% of total
fresh water aquaculture production. Shrimps, Black Tiger and Vannamei, remain to be the most favourite
among the developed countries and earned 3.08 billion US$ to India’s economy. Though India has huge
Aquaculture resources are utilized, implying huge potential water resources are utilized, implying huge
potential for the growth of this sector.
