Global tea industry overview

A key factor driving the growth of the market is the rising consumption of tea. The global consumption of tea is
increasing. By volume, the consumption of tea increased by around 30 to 36 billion liters from 2013 to 2018. Globally,
tea was the second most consumed liquid after packaged water in 2017. The growth trend in the production and
consumption of tea is expected to continue during the forecast period. Major consumers of tea in terms of per capita
consumption include Turkey, Ireland, Paraguay, Argentina, Kuwait, and the UK. Countries such as China, Sri Lanka,
India, Kenya, and Indonesia are the largest producers and consumers of tea. Exports of tea are also increasing to cater
to the globally increasing demand for tea. The growing consumption of tea is expected to be a key volume driver for
the market during the forecast period.
The introduction of premium tea products is identified as one of the key emerging trends in the global tea market. The
engagement of consumers with beverages is changing globally. The beverage industry is largely driven by premium
products, and the global tea market is not an exception. For instance, in the US, the introduction of premium tea
products is expected to drive the market during the forecast period. Similarly, European tea drinkers are looking for
niche and luxurious flavors in the form of customized offerings. Black tea fusions, fruit/herbal teas, and RTD are among
the tea products that have growing varieties of premium products. Moreover, consumers are also willing to spend on
premium teas, which in turn is contributing largely to the growth of the global tea market. Owing to such factors the
global tea market is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 5% during the forecast period.

Facts and Myths

There are number of brands across the globe who promise weight loss regime with their products using the
term “Detox Tea”, however, this term is a complete hoax. “Detox” is a legitimate medical term that has been
turned into a marketing strategy — all designed to treat a non-existent condition. Real detoxification isn’t
ordered from a menu of alternative health treatments, or assembled from ingredients in your pantry. Actual
detoxification is provided in hospitals under life-threatening circumstances — usually when there are
dangerous levels of drugs, alcohol, or other poisons in the body. These are not products you can purchase in
a pharmacy for personal use. What you’re seeing promoted as “detox” is using medical terminology, but
only to give the perception of scientific legitimacy to medically-useless products and services. Fake detox is
built around a number of easily-debunked premises. Once you can spot the flaws, it’s easy to tell fact from
fiction[2].

Before it was co-opted in the recent craze, the word "detox" referred chiefly to a medical procedure that
rids the body of dangerous, often life-threatening, levels of alcohol, drugs, or poisons. Patients undergoing
medical detoxification are usually treated in hospitals or clinics. The treatment generally involves the use of
drugs and other therapies in a combination that depends on the type and severity of the toxicity.

The detox programs now being promoted to the health-conscious public are a different matter. These are
largely do-it-yourself procedures aimed at eliminating alleged toxins that are held responsible for a variety
of symptoms, including headache, bloating, joint pain, fatigue, and depression. Detox products are not
available by prescription; they are sold in retail stores, at spas, over the Internet, and by direct mail. Many
are advertised as useful for detoxifying specific organs or systems; others are portrayed as "whole body"
cleansers.[3]

The body's own detox system

We tend to forget that the body is equipped with a detoxification system of its own, which includes the
following:

The skin. The main function of the body's largest organ is to provide a barrier against harmful substances,
from bacteria and viruses to heavy metals and chemical toxins. The skin is a one-way defense system; toxins
are not eliminated in perspiration.

The respiratory system. Fine hairs inside the nose trap dirt and other large particles that may be inhaled.
Smaller particles that make it to the lungs are expelled from the airways in mucus.

The immune system. This exquisitely orchestrated network of cells and molecules is designed to recognize
foreign substances and eliminate them from the body. Components of the immune system are at work in
blood plasma, in lymph, and even in the small spaces between cells.

The intestines. Peyer's patches — lymph nodes in the small intestine — screen out parasites and other
foreign substances before nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the colon.

The liver. Acting as the body's principal filter, the liver produces a family of proteins called
metallothioneins, which are also found in the kidneys. Metallothioneins not only metabolize dietary
nutrients like copper and zinc but also neutralize harmful metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury to
prepare for their elimination from the body. Liver cells also produce groups of enzymes that regulate the
metabolism of drugs and are an important part of the body's defense against harmful chemicals and other
toxins.

The kidneys. The fact that urine tests are used to screen for drugs and toxins is a testament to the kidneys'
remarkable efficiency in filtering out waste substances and moving them out of the body.

The bottom line

The human body can defend itself very well against most environmental insults and the effects of occasional
indulgence (see "The body's own detox system"). If you're generally healthy, concentrate on giving your body
what it needs to maintain its robust self-cleaning system — a healthful diet, adequate fluid intake, regular
exercise, sufficient sleep, and all recommended medical check-ups. If you experience fatigue, pallor,
unexplained weight gain or loss, changes in bowel function, or breathing difficulties that persist for days or
weeks, visit your doctor instead of a detox spa.[3]

17 Best Detox Teas of 2018

Here are the most effective and best detox teas of this year. These selections were a result of the highest
ratings for detox power, taste, popularity, and having no preservatives or artificial ingredients. Rotating

probably the most delicious. Organic burdock and dandelion aid the liver, while juniper berry purifies the
kidneys. A great way to integrate this

Unlike the Twinings tea above, this is a very complex tea, that blends sour, salty, roasted, sweet, and bitter

ability.

Be careful though, this product contains senna leaf, which is a natural laxative and can get things moving too

9. Herba Frame 14 Day Tea Tox

Special Review: Personal Testimony

Every once in a while a product catches our eye and we get the chance to do a full test and review about it.
The Herba Frame 14 Day Tea Tox was tested by our Owner and writer, Ray. She was offered this tea to review
for her unbiased feedback:

The 14 Day Tea Tox is definitely one of the best ones I’ve tried so far. I am a big tea drinker, and have used a
variety of detox teas, everything from name brand to local blends, just to help my digestive system get on
track. Here are some of my first impressions of the Herba Frame 14 Day Tea Tox:

Pros:

Attractive Packaging– you can see from the photos that the round box has a simple yet attractive design. It
is easy to store and carry with you for an on the go beverage. The container, unlike many bagged versions,
is cardboard and recyclable.

Pre-Measured Portions- Within the container are 28 pre-portioned tea bags (2 for each day), skipping the
part where you need to carry a measuring spoon with you.

Whole Herbal Ingredients– As you can see from the photo I took below, the herbal blend uses large, whole
pieces that won’t leak into your drink. I love the contrast of colors and ingredients they use. It’s easy to look
at the tea, and the ingredients list and know you’re getting exactly what is advertised. You can read more
about the ingredients they chose, and what they can do for you on their website.
Taste– the flavor of this detox tea is pretty mild compared to others. It helps that they recommend brewing
it in 200-400 ml of water- which is quite a lot. Keep in mind, a big part of “detoxing” is really a balance of
diet, and drinking more water is a huge part of finding this balance and staying fuller longer.

Regularity– The tea helped my digestive system to regulate, and I noticed significantly less bloating and
stomach irritation. It also helped with my water intake and developing better habits with that.

Cons:

Mesh Tea Bags– As far ask I can find, these silk detox tea bags could be biodegradable, but silk takes a long
time to break down. Tea bags are often coated in non-biodegradable sealants to keep them from dissolving
in water, as well. If we can find more information regarding this, we will update this portion of the review.

Steeping Time– the time frame of the recommended steeping time is 3-10 minutes. When it comes to a
detox tea, I prefer to have a brew temperature, and more precise time frame so I know how to get the best
results. At the start, I was brewing about 300 ML and steeping for 6 minutes. Near the end I switched to a
400 ML brew at 5 minutes for a slightly weaker tea.

Overall Weight Loss– as is similar with many detox teas, the weight loss while taking it was minimal, but I
really am an advocate that it be used in conjunction with a healthy eating and living routines. A detox tea
should not be used as a meal replacement. I also think results might vary based on steeping time, and
perhaps I was not making a strong enough brew.

Overall recommendation:

I still very much liked this two week detox tea, and would recommend it to others to try. It’s especially great
for those who want to try a detox, but aren’t a big fan of strong tea flavors.
10. HEY GIRL Cleanse – Detox Tea + Reduce Bloating

Competitor Analysis:

Search Results of last 5 years

Result:

Out of all the brands we found that yogi tea has the highest search results on google making it the primary
competitors in the market.

Skinnymint tea is a new entrant in the segment which market it’s product with “28-day detox program”
which have no scientific evidence. People do lose weight but due to the laxative and diuretic properties of
the ingredients used in the tea blend which is unhealthy way of losing weight causing long term dehydration
and increase in appetite. Moreover, the claims of losing weight in “28-days” have no scientific evidence as
no biomedical research was conducted to back these claims. They are just using marketing gimmick and
targeting female audience to buy their product. Due to excessive marketing, they did have a good initial time
but later one the interest of the consumers reduced since they are getting more aware about the actual
facts.

Similar trend could be observed with Lyfe Tea “14 day detox” program as well.

SkinnyMeTea is popular only in Australia (Being the Headquarter), the below demographics shows the
stronghold of Yogi tea on the entire global market in a span of 5 years.
Kahwa Tea Scientific Study Conclusion

Kahwa is a traditional polyherbal drink, can scavenge free radicals and may prevent us from any diseases
such as neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, arthritis, diabetes and cancer, etc. It showed antioxidant
property that may be ascribed to its phytochemical composition, especially polyphenols and flavonoids that
are believed to play an important role in radical scavenging activity. Moreover, it was observed that kahwa
ameliorates H2O2-induced haemolysis and DNA damage. Kahwa is also found to have an appreciable amount
of polyphenols and flavonoids, which may be responsible for its biological activities.[5]

What makes YogiTea a great Branded Experience? 3 elements stand out:

1. Niche: YogiTea is a special tea based on unique Ayurvedic tea recipes. They have 44 different teas, based
on the three doshas. The tea I drink and like the most is Bright Mood. The essence of the tea is “Everything
is Good”. Every specific tea has an appealing name and a meaning. These teas are drank by many Yoga
practitioners in the world. This is a growth market. More and more people acknowledge the positive effects
of practicing yoga and so this niche market is a great place to be.
2. Brandvalues: Their Brand Promise is not 100% clear but when looking at the YogiTea story, they promote
individual wellbeing. “Feel good, be good and do good” is what they are about. I always feel good when
drinking their teas. They are good with the ingredients and how they handle their business partners. They
do well from a CSR perspective and provide support and funding for people in need across the globe. When
reading their website they are very specific on Brand Values and they are distinctive! Impressive how they
translate these in a practical manner in their business and products.

3. Packaging: YogiTea has great tea as their product, but what I love most is their packaging. This is where
they make a BIG difference. Everything is about promoting my wellbeing. A real branded experience in this
little box with 17 teabags. The packaging shows an easy Yoga Posture and have a look at the barcode: that
is also a Yogi! To make the experience even better, every cup of tea delivers a branded experience! The tea
label shares an inspirational quote; mine was “You are unlimited”. These quotes always show a smile on my
face.

Focusing on a real niche market, being clear and straight about their Brand Values and being distinctive in
packaging makes YogiTea one of the best practices in branded experiences. This doesn’t happen by accident,
but every time I buy a box of YogiTea, they deliver. They wow me and make me happy.

In the tea market, Traditional Medicinals faces direct competition from wellness and natural brands like Yogi,
which promotes how its teas “support” benefits like “energy, clarity, awareness and general feel-goodness.”

How is the health market being driven by ‘healthy teas’?

With strong growth and drive towards living a ‘cleaner’ and healthier lifestyle over the past decade, the
healthy teas market has seen a clear boom across the globe. According to research analysts in Europe, both
fruit and herbal tea sales were valued at €1.6bn in 2016, while the fruit and herbal tea market grew by 6.8%
in value overall.

Much of the growth of the fruit, herbal and detox tea market can be attributed to the trend of a greater
focus on living sustainably. This also means purchasing sustainably- buying from a brand that is in-line with
these values. Pukka Herb Tea is one such company that has shown exponential growth in recent years due
to their focus on meeting consumer demand when it comes to health and wellness, sourcing and
manufacturing their products ethically.
Marketing, branding & variety

The growth of the healthy teas market had also been pinned down to an increased range of variety, and
subsequent marketing thereof – essentially offering a tea for all times of the day. No longer is tea reserved
as a mid-morning pick-me-up or post-dinner wind down, in today’s market there is a herbal or fruit tea for
every occasion.

There has been a noticeable increase in teas that are branded for specific requirements. For example,
Ginseng tea branded as a ‘rise and shine tea’ is now on offer, ubiquitously, and is not a ‘speciality’ tea which
can only be purchased from a ‘specialty’ store. Marketing around the healthy teas market has become niche-
orientated – if the consumer has a common ailment e.g. Sleeplessness or anxiety, a marketing focus is being
built around this.[6]

This type of marketing, combined with creative, attractive branding has paved the way for healthy teas to
break through as a group of mainstream, in-demand beverages that cater to every occasion.[6]

Along with this, tea producers have made it their mission to emphasise the benefits and functionality of their
products. Brands such as Pukka Tea, Health & Heather, Dr Stuart’s and Yogi have become well-known as
sophisticated teas and have thus put healthy teas on the proverbial map in sales over recent years.[6]
