I. ABSTRACT

In many systems today, solutions play an important role. A solution is a homogeneous

combination of two or more separate substances ' molecules or atoms. In a solution, minimum of two
substances are present. A solute is any substances dissolved by the solvent. While a solvent is a medium
into which the other substances are dissolved or mixed. Water is the most common solvent but not all
materials is dissolved to water.
In this experiment, we dissolved cupric sulfate pentahydrate, potassium permanganate, sodium
chloride, sodium hydroxide and sucrose in water individually. Each solid had different reaction with
water, some of the solution turned into violet, blue, pinkish etc. in color. The volume also changed
because of the reaction between the solid and the liquid.

II. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENTS

 Glass rod
 Graduated Cylinder, 10-mL, 50-mL
 Top-loading balance
 Test tube, 20-mL
 Watch Glass

III. PROCEDURE
1. We calculated the mass of cupric sulfate pentahydrate, potassium permanganate, sodium chloride, sodium
hydroxide and sucrose using their molecular weight and their given molarity.
2. Using a clean and dry watch glass, we cautiously measured the calculated mass of solids using the top-loading
balance.
3. On the other hand, we filled out the graduated cylinder (10 mL) with 10 mL water and placed 0.5 g
of cupric sulfate pentahydrate.
4. We stirred the solution using the glass rod until the solute is dissolved in distilled water.
5. We transferred the 10 mL solution in a 50 mL graduated cylinder and added water to reach 20 mL.
6. And after that, we filled out the test tube with 10 mL of the solution.
7. The solution was set aside and observed for its change in color and volume.
8. We repeated the process with 0.32 g of potassium permanganate, 0.12 g sodium chloride, 0.05 g
sodium hydroxide, and 0.68 g sucrose.
