UJestern Canoclo Summer Gomes Trophy

The Western Canada Summer Games Trophy is awarded to the province or territory that accumulates the
most points over the six days of the Games. This is determined by the provincial/territorial final standings on a
sport by sport basis. Six points are awarded for finishing first, five points for a second place showing and so
on.

At the 1995 Western Canada Summer Games, Team Alberta finished in second place behind British
Columbia.

The following is a list of the flag points awarded to each competing provincial/territorial contingent.

PROVINCE STANDING POINTS

British Columbia 201
Alberta 2 165
Manitoba 3 153
Saskatchewan 4 144
Northwest Territories 5 17
Yukon 6 14

While medals are only indirectly related to the Western Canada Games flag points, it is interesting to look at
the medal summary for all provincial/territorial contingents.

"The Western Canada Summer Games was the highlight of my four years as head coach of the provincial
women's basketball team. am really pleased that we were competitive with all the teams at the games.
I

Any of the four western provinces could have won the women's basketball competition. What will
I

remember most, though, is the great group of people that made up our team. It was a real pleasure to
work with them in preparation for these games."

"Mike Perks definitely took center stage for the team. Not only winning medals in individual events Mike
also coxed the war canoe to a silver medal performance. Mike was the leader of a relatively young team.
This competition holds good things in the future of Alberta Canoeing. Four members of the team will go
on to represent Alberta at the 1997 Canada Games in Brandon. A great job by all mission staff; you put
on a great show!"

COACHES CLIPBOARD
"As a team, our athletes performed well however, we were without some of or top athletes due to a
and had no wheelchair competitors. Off the courts, the athletes and coaches
conflict with junior nationals
were quickly caught up in the frenzied world of pin trading and later in the Games, uniform trading.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Western Canada Summer Games which has a unique
atmosphere and excitement that can not be duplicated in single sport competitions (e.g. tennis junior
nationals)."
