Provision of Information in Digital Format
AIS Application Specific Messages (AIS ASM)
 AIS messages :
• Over the last few years, the CCG worked closely with
the Canadian Hydrographic Service and Environment
Canada to broadcast meteorological and hydrographic
data through its terrestrial AIS Network.

• Right now, data from 99 meteorological and 79

hydrographic stations are broadcasted throughout the
country.

Provision of Information in Digital Format
AIS Application Specific Messages (AIS ASM)
 AIS messages :
• Last winter season, a trial was conducted with the Ice Recommended Route.
• Prior to broadcasting a real route, a preliminary test was done near Quebec City to
evaluate the capability of ships’ equipment to display the information on their ECDIS
or ECS.
• The main objective is to avoid ship’s officers to manually enter the route waypoints in
their display system → risk of error.

Winter Season 2018/19

• In addition to current procedures, ice recommended routes

will be broadcasted through AIS messages and
consequently, be available in an a digital format

• To display the Ice route on board, ships’ display system

must:
 Be interfaced with the AIS, and
 Have the functionalities to decode the AIS message

• CCG is using the IMO format based on SN.1/Circ. 289
