Uttar Pradesh (/ˌʊtər prəˈdɛʃ/; IAST: Uttar Pradeś [ˈʊtːəɾ pɾəˈdeːʃ] ( listen)) is a state in

northern India. With roughly 200 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in India as well as
the most populous country subdivision in the world.[18] It was created on 1 April 1937 as the United
Provinces of Agra and Oudh during British rule, and was renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950. The state
is divided into 18 divisions and 75 districts with the capital being Lucknow. The main ethnic group is
the Hindavi people, forming the demographic plurality. On 9 November 2000, a new
state, Uttarakhand, was carved out from the state's Himalayan hill region. The two major rivers of the
state, the Ganga and Yamuna, join at Allahabad (Prayagraj) and then flow as the Ganga further
east. Hindi is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state, along
with Urdu.
The state is bordered by Rajasthan to the west, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi to the
northwest, Uttarakhand and Nepal to the north, Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south, and
touches the states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to the southeast. It covers 243,290 square
kilometres (93,933 sq mi), equal to 7.34% of the total area of India, and is the fourth-largest Indian
state by area. Agriculture and service industries are the largest parts of the state's economy.

The state has several historical, natural, and religious tourist destinations, such
as Agra, Ayodhya, Vrindavan, Lucknow, Mathura, Varanasi, Allahabad and Gorakhpur.

 The leading gold market of Asia is located in Meerut. It is leading exporter of music
instruments and sports related items.
 Bulandshahr is popular all over world for its Khurja Pottery. It is exported to many foreign
countries such as United Arab Emirates, Australia, USA, United Kingdom, UAE etc.
 Moradabad city of Uttar Pradesh is popular globally for its brass work. Its handicraft items
are exported all over the world. Not only brass, it is producing many other products such
as iron sheet metalwares, wood works, aluminium artworks, and glasswares.Cities like
Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Allahabad, Ghaziabad, Noida, Lucknow etc are also center of many
institutes.
