CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS
INTRODUCTION

Seafarers come from all over the world spending their lives close to

the seas as they find life at sea to be a unique existence. They come from

different backgrounds and cultures, and they work in varied areas of

shipping business. Being a seaman is all about being away from home.

Usually it is okay. But still we manage to cope it for our dreams of having

a better life/future. Back in the mists of time there were as many people

running away to sea which euphemism for running away to sea from their

problems. People have always gone to sea for many different reasons. For

some there is still a sense of adventure, for others the challenge, and for

others they think this job that sustained their family well, while some are

in for the money and so whatever reason is. They tasted to work in the

sea, away from their loved ones and the job far from the usual. In reality

there are many great things about a career at sea, but one of the

problems of being a seafarer is to cope being not their when spending

holidays from home, family and friends and then when they are

celebrating special occasions. Regardless of the hardship they are still in

the position of doing their responsibility well in the sea. Behind those

impressions of the people about working as a seafarer, they have no idea

1

what it is to be a seafarer. In this third world country most of its citizens

suffer poverty, lack of food, lack of shelter and lack of chances to have a

better future. Nowadays, the youths dream big as far as their

imaginations. Their wants go beyond the farthest destination. They plan

the best for their future and for their family. They want to explore the

world. Maritime education will bring them to their goal. In this profession

they will reach out their dreams. A lot of benefits and opportunity will

come. Maritime students expected that if they are dedicated in this career

they will achieve what they dream. That's why parents work hard for their

children to be a successful person and have a decent job that can sustain

their needs. Indeed, that’s what a Filipino seafarer is. Nowadays, students

and their parents know seafaring is the best and high paying job which

everyone needs to survive. That's why parents work hard for their children

to be a successful person and have a decent job that can sustain their

needs. One of the jobs which every child dreams of is to become seafarer

or even the Captain or Chief Engineer of the ship. Some child sticks to

what they dream of until they reached college but some are not. For some

being a seafarer is what they think is their passion. Considering nowadays,

getting an employment is hard, and choosing a right course is a must. On

this study we conduct a research to know their Level of expectation of

2

choosing maritime education, factors affecting their career choice, factors

that lead them for choosing this course.

Background of the study

This is a study of Reason of Freshmen Student of STI -NAMEI in

Pursuing Maritime Education. This study aims of the research are to

examine the motives of first year students and to identify the key factors

that lead them to maritime course.

The BSMT Program is a FOUR-YEAR COURSE that leads to the

degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation. The

curricular structure is THREE (3) YEARS academics and ONE (1) Year

Practicum or Shipboard Training. Through this program the student will be

able to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to accomplish

their future duties and responsibility of a marine officer.

The BS Mar E Program is a FOUR-YEAR COURSE that leads to the

degree of Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. The curricular

structure is THREE (3) YEARS academics and ONE (1) Year Practicum or

Shipboard Training. This program aims to provide students with the

knowledge and skills that will enable them to operate and maintain the

different machineries installed in marine vessels, including the propulsion

plant, adjunct and auxiliary machineries, electrical and refrigeration

system. In this profession they will reach out their dreams. A lot of

benefits and opportunity will come. Maritime students expected that if

they are dedicated in this career, they will achieve what they dream.

There are some students who are inspired by their neighbour or

maybe there is a generation of seafarers in their blood, some by their

friends or it might be by the request of their parents. Being a maritime

student is not always good. There are circumstances that make them feel

hopeless to finish it. The financial need is a major factor that affects their

studies; others came from peer pressure or unique environment. No

matter what reasons they have they are already motivated to choose

maritime. In maritime education and training, this question is especially

important because of international regulations of maritime professions.

Don't just think of a course because it is where most of your friends

are. Don't just think of going to that specific school and take up that

course (BSMT & BSMARE) just because rumours are overwhelming about

One makes a decision about the work he/she will do in life, it is

important that the decision be based on criteria that suit his personal

values, temperament, wants, and skills. Considering nowadays, getting an

employment is hard, and choosing the right path is a must So, the

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Presented here are the reviews of related literature and studies,

which are deemed important to the researcher to reinforce the findings of

the study and supports insights to the present investigation.

A. Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature

According to Kalvaitene et.al, (2014) the motives of choosing

profession is the great majority of young people, were determined by

economic, social and psychological factors. It is proven statistically that if

the student chooses profession following his emotions’ interest in the

profession and understanding of the advantages of professions, his studies

are more effective, than if he chooses profession accidentally or influenced

by his/her family or relatives.

According to Cristina Dragomir (2014), Young people are not

motivated to follow a seafaring career due to several reasons like they will

be far from their family and friends for long periods and stressful work in

challenging conditions. Seafaring is attractive for young generation due to

the salary.

12
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

Accoding to Mohmad Yazam Sharif of (Universiti Utara

Malaysian april 2016) Career entry process is very crucial for

individuals' working lives. They can decide to choose or not to choose the

particular careers. Based on literature, the match between personality

types and vocational choices has a positive impact on employees' job

satisfaction, which in turn it could lead to lower turnover and higher

productivity of the company. But sometimes people have difficulties

choosing careers. They may choose the careers mismatched with their

personalities or interests. This is because their career choice might be

influenced by gender. The gender differences in perceptions and cultural

beliefs about gender are important factors that influence career choice.

However, the influence of gender on career choice may differ in different

countries where people hold different cultures. The purpose of this paper

is to present a framework for an investigation of gender influence on

career choice of undergraduate students, specifically in Thailand

Local Literature

According to Carlos L. Aguado, et al., (2015), Maritime students

graduated from public schools have significantly higher chance of being

influenced by people in choosing the school and degree program and they

also have a significantly higher degree of interest towards the maritime

13
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

program compared to those graduated from private schools. It is the

student’s choice to enrol in Maritime Program with the support of their

parents. Also, with the advice from their brothers and sisters and as well

as teachers is also considered in making their decision. If they can

practice the profession right and they have the eagerness to make their

dreams come true, there is an assurance that they can come across all

borders.

According to THOMPSON, STEVENG APRIL 11, 2016 In the

Philippines, the school year is now ended. And many high school graduate

students think what course they will take for their next academic step.

School year 2016 is somehow different from the past years. The new

curriculum is now implemented this year, the K to 12 which make a

student be ready to work and for college. Additional 2 years of attending

school will occur. There are many colleges and schools whose implement

this in their programs. If you are wondering to take a maritime course

better start with Maritime School Philippines who have k to 12 program.

Since maritime is what you want, the school will ready you to the course

and future you are aiming. They will teach the students the basic skills in

maritime like desk, engine and catering stuffs. In case you don’t want to

continue another 4 years and want to work immediate, your senior high

14

certificate can help you to get a job. Also, it is the starter path for whose

wants to get maritime course.

B. Related Studies

Foreign studies

According to the study conducted by Yui-yip Lau and Adolf K.Y.

Ng october 2015, based on a single case study, i.e., Hong Kong, and is

an initial attempt to apply the concept of professionalism in maritime

education through an exploratory study. It should provide useful insight to

professional bodies on how to improve the quality of these under- and

postgraduate programs in the future. To increase the generalizability of

our findings, we plan to conduct large-scale longitudinal studies on

maritime education in other countries, for instance, a comparison of

maritime programs offered in Hong Kong and those in other countries

(e.g., Canada, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Korea, etc.). A

comparative study between Hong Kong and other Asian countries should

be of great significance, as the findings will help to plot the general

development of under- and postgraduate studies in maritime education.

By doing so, we can create a strong platform in conducting further

research on this important topic.

15
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

According to the study conducted by Athanasios A. Pallis 2012,

this study reveals the profiles, motivations, and expectations of students

pursuing undergraduate maritime programs. Although a number of

tertiary institutions offer maritime programs, the characteristics and

structures of the demands for such programs remain under-researched.

This paper illustrates and discusses the results of a survey completed by

students pursuing undergraduate programmes in maritime business and

management at three universities in Asia and Europe, and compares them

with the findings of a database examining similar issues towards

postgraduate students within the same institutions. Research highlights

include the tendency of undergraduate students to combine studies and

work, considering real-world experiences as a vital contributor to career

prospects. Shipping (notably tankers, dry bulk and containers) stands out

as the ideal professional paths within the maritime industries.

According to the study conducted by John Dinwoodie, in recent

years, external pressures on maritime businesses have increased their

need to employ high calibre personnel, educated to respond effectively to

these pressures. Set against this requirement, the onus of acquiring a

university education has shifted to the individual, as state subsidies to

individuals seeking to undertake higher education in British universities

have declined, and many corporate training programs have been aimed at

16
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

meeting the needs of an organization rather than the individuals within

them. If the future supply of graduates is to match ongoing industrial

requirements, one needs to understand why students enroll in particular

courses, and how importantly they perceive employment considerations to

be when making their decisions. This paper reports on a survey of why

students at several British universities chose to enroll on undergraduate

courses in Maritime Business and considers the implications of its findings

for ensuring that an adequate supply of suitably educated graduates will

continue to be available to meet industrial needs.

According to Darren Fizer December 2013, Choosing the right

career path is becoming more and more important for young students

today. Students have to take into account many things when choosing a

career and college major. Many factors can influence a student’s decision,

including parents, coaches, religious figures, or any role models in a

student’s life. Participation in agriculture clubs such as FFA and 4-H can

also have an effect on students’ career choices. The objectives of this

research study were to determine what factors affect agriculture students’

choice of career path. A questionnaire was developed to examine areas of

interest and attributes that may have influenced students when choosing a

career path. The questionnaire was completed by 128 students in the

freshman studies classes of The University of Tennessee at Martin who

17
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

plan to major in Agriculture. Chi-square tests were used to examine

relationships among study factors. According to this survey, students are

most influenced by family when choosing a major; 22% chose family as

the most important factor influencing their choice of major. However, 21%

of the students chose “a career that is personally rewarding” and 20%

chose “FFA/4-H experience” as the most important factors affecting their

choice. FFA played a bigger role in choosing a major than 4-H. Farming

background and the size of schools did not play a role in choosing a major.

However, students with a farming background were more likely to plan on

working in production agriculture than students without a farm

background. The students who completed the questionnaire had a positive

outlook on their career. Students believe their projected careers will make

a positive impact on the world. Students also believe that there are

excellent career opportunities in agriculture.

Local Studies

According to the study conducted by Edwin M. Agena, et al.,

(2015), he found out that Marine Engineering students have higher

positive attitude because of the professor giving fair grades while the

Marine Transportation is having doubt in their grades and they want to

discuss and reorient how the professors make their grades.

18
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

According to the study conducted by Teruel, Melba O. 2011, this

study determined the influence of perception of the maritime students of

St. Therese-MTC Colleges. The study revealed that the participants of this

study were average in their academic performance and they seem to have

moderately favorable perception of the maritime profession. There was no

significant relationship between their academic performance and

perception of the maritime profession. Significant difference was noted in

the perception of the maritime profession and academic performance

when the students were grouped according to their secondary scholastic

achievement. Student with lower perception of the maritime profession

than those who had higher secondary scholastic achieve seemed to have a

lower perception of the maritime profession than those who had higher

secondary scholastic achievement. No significant differences were noted in

the perception of the maritime profession and academic performance of

the students when grouped according to high school of origin, presence of

seafarer in the family, socio-economic status, and mother’s highest

educational attainment.

According to the study conducted by Joseph Cezar L. Deligero

July 2015 Several factors may be considered in selecting school and

degree program like quality education, the people from the environment,

personal choice; and accessibility of the school from students' residences.

19
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta

This study utilized a descriptive type of research method with Freshman

Maritime students as respondents. Findings revealed that it is the personal

choice of the students to enroll in maritime program in Lyceum of the

Philippines University-Batangas (LPU-B) with the support primarily from

their parents wherein quality education through being known as home of

board topnotchers and its standards are considered big factor for their

decision. They also believed that finishing maritime education would bring

them in employment abroad which is basically the nature of duties and

responsibilities of seafarers. High interest towards the degree program is

also manifested among the maritime students. Maritime students

graduated from public schools have significantly higher chance of being

influenced by people in choosing the school and degree program and they

also have a significantly higher degree of interest towards the maritime

program compared to those graduated from private schools.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

This chapter briefly presents the different methods and procedures

used by the researcher in doing his investigation. It consists of the

research design, the research locale, and the subjects. It also includes the

instruments used in the collection and gathering of data, as well as the

statistical tools used in processing and analysing the data. Specifically, this

research chapter covers the following discussion: the research design, the

population and respondents of the study, the sample and sampling

technique, the research instrument and techniques, the source of data,

the statistical.

Research Design to Be Used

A survey questionnaire was used in gathering data. The respondents

selected through convenience sampling because the researcher depended

on the accessibility and proximity of the respondents inside the school.

The survey questionnaire was collected right after the respondents

finished answering the questions.

The data gathered from the questionnaire was arranged, tabulated,

classified and analyzed.

21
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

Description of the Respondents

The participants of the study were 50 randomly selected freshmen

students, 36 BS Marine Transportation and 14 BS Marine Engineering of
STI-NAMEI.

INSTRUMENT TO BE USED

The questionnaires would be the major instrument used in this study

so that we are secure despondence to certain questions. The draft of the

questionnaire was drawn out based on the researcher’s readings, previous

studies, professional literature, publish and unpublished thesis relevant to

the study. The questionnaires that was designed to determine the reason

of freshmen student in pursuing maritime course. Open-minded question

would be used to give the respondents the opportunity to give their

responses and suggestion.

A Likert scale was made used of the researcher to rate the different

reasons of the respondents. Each of these questions would then have a set

number of responses for people to choose from, respectively (Strongly

Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree). The responses

for each statement were weighted and had corresponding ratings. The

scoring for positive statements are as follows: 5- strongly agree, 4-agree,

3- neutral, 2-disagree, 1- strongly disagree; The survey composed of 28

questions which the researcher categorized it into three parts; factors that

22
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

lead them in pursuing maritime, reason of freshmen students in terms of

personal and profession.

It is a non-probability sampling technique where subject are

selected because of their convenient accessibility and proximity of the
researcher.

Gathering Procedures

During data gathering procedure the first step that we used was to

conduct an informal interview to the freshmen students of STI- NAMEI.

After we get the data the researcher would provide questionnaires to the

students who involve to this study. The researcher personally distribute

the questionnaire to the respondents and facilitated by retrieval of

responses.

Statistical Treatment of Data

To determine the result of the study the researcher used a

convenience sampling. The following responses was recorded in tally

sheets before the data put in tabular for statistical treatment. The

researcher also used tabular presentation to easily determine the

categories of the gathered data.

In probability and statistics, the population mean, or expected value,

is a measure of the central tendency either of a probability distribution or

23
STI-NAMEI
P.Sanchez st. corner Pat Antonio, Sta
Mesa Manila

of the random variable characterized by that distribution.[2] In the case of

a discrete probability distribution of a random variable X, the mean is

equal to the sum over every possible value weighted by the probability of

that value; that is, it is computed by taking the product of each possible

value x of X and its probability p(x), and then adding all these products

together, giving .[3] An analogous formula applies to the case of

a continuous probability distribution. Not every probability distribution has

a defined mean; see the Cauchy distribution for an example. Moreover, for

some distributions the mean is infinite.

A weighted mean is a kind of average. Instead of each data point

contributing equally to the final mean, some data points contribute more

“weight” than others. ... Weighted means are very common in statistics,

especially when studying populations.

A z-test is a statistical test to determine whether two population

means are different when the variances are known and the sample size is

large. It can be used to test hypotheses in which the z-test follows a

normal distribution. A z-statistic, or z-score, is a number representing the

result from the z-test

Conclusion

The researcher conclude that the major factor that lead to the

respondents in pursuing maritime course is good wages and good benefits

fallow by having an opportunity to travel abroad for free. The study

determined that the reason of the respondents is to become a

captain/chief engineer and the seafarer need to be versatile and must

willing to face different straggle. The study show that the respondents had

a goal to get the highest position in shipping organization and that title is

captain and chief engineer and if there achieves their goals the good

wages will fallow and they will have the opportunity to give their family a

good financial assistant that hard to achieve in the different profession.

Recommendation

From the findings and conclusion presented, the following were strongly

recommended:

Researcher’s - recommend and promote to the following people

who will benefit this study for maritime students to encourage their friends

to take up maritime course because based on the survey that we

conducted ‘’my friend/ classmate encourage me to choose the same

course and school as them’’ got the lowest weighted mean.

For maritime students - The Researchers would also like to

recommend to the aspiring maritime students to gather more information

about maritime courses not just the positive side of it but more on how

the reality on-board ship has. Taking up the right course that suits your

personality make you ease to success. On a personal note of each

students, majority of the respondents want to go on-board ship to have an

opportunity to travel on-board for free.

To the future researcher/s - Researchers also recommend to the

future researcher/s that the questionnaire must contain an easy question

that is relevant to the study. Have more respondents as many as you can,

it can help to identify easily on what factors lead them for choosing

maritime courses, use another method to collect data that would increase

the sample size. And lastly, give some advice to them when taking a

maritime course, let them know what’s the real life onboard ship and not

only the positive side of it.

High school institution - Researcher also recommend to the high

school institution to have a briefing about maritime courses, so the senior

high school student have a brief idea about what kind of profession is

maritime education is all about.
