Prevention and Repair of Cracks in Building 2

Problem Statement:
Cracks in the building are common occurrence of problem in a building. Some
unavoidable and faulty steps reasons for a crack which starts to display on some
structural and non-structural parts of buildings.
Cracking Problem in a building is becoming a very complicated issue for an engineer
to solve. We all want safe building structure but it is not easy to accomplish this
task well. Cracks forms are different so it is very difficult to resolve issue for a
specific form because each form of crack need different repairing materials and
techniques.

Introduction:
To minimize and prevention from the crack it is important to know about the crack
mechanism and its causes. There are some principle mechanism that cause a crack
in some non-structural buildings and that are followings.
 Elastic deformation in a building
 Creep
 Chemical reaction
 Moisture
 Vegetation growth
That’s way, it is important to understand first the cause of cracks and then the
effective measures should be adopted for the prevention. There are three
classification of crack which depends upon its width.
Classifications Width of Crack
Thin Crack Less than 1mm
Medium Crack 1mm to 2mm
Wide Crack Greater than 2 mm

Although cracks in concrete couldn’t be prevented completely but they can be

prevented by using specific material and methods of construction and using specific
criteria.

Prevention and Repair of Cracks in Building 3

Aims & Objective:

We all need of a house that should be structurally safe and apparently beautiful
but it is not as easy. So, identification of such cracks and adopting preventive
measures is essential on time.
In this project we’ll discuss about the problems which engineers are facing like
crack after construction and what techniques should be taken to cure these cracks
so that we could avoid from a major destruction.
In this designed project we want to solve the issues of crack with our research and
ideas so that crack on building could easily be cured. We have chosen “Prevention
and Repair of cracks in Building” with modern techniques for our proposed project.
And for this we have to understand the most important thing in this project and
that is cause and some measures that need to be taken for prevention and repair
of crack.

Literature review:
There are some researchers that have already worked on such related topics about
the causes of cracks such as cracks and its controlling techniques done by some
researcher named as Kazem Reza Kashyzadeh and Neda Aghili Kesheh in 2012 [1].
This paper describes about the cracking and some instructions to civil engineering
for such building that are cracked and how to improve this.
Similarly in concrete structure evaluations of cracks in building done by “Sayed
Mohd Mehndi et al.” in 2014 [2]. This paper tells about some techniques that how
to evaluate these cracks and how ultrasonic Testing and crack Compactor
techniques are used for these cracks.
Study about the cracks controlling through visual Inspection and identification
done by “Kishor Kunal and Namesh Killemsetty” in 2014 [3]. This research tells that
how this inspection is helpful to categorize and identify the different parameters of
building. Some reaches shows that many cracks are similar by appearance but
causes are different [4].
According to an American journal of engineering research most of the cracks in
buildings are actually the result of human negligence in all the steps of
construction. Similarly In this journal it is mention that according to results of the

reconnaissance survey most of the cracks are located at the left side elevation of
the building than at right side. And the nature of the building cracks shows that
91% cracks are dormant cracks, while 9% cracks are active cracks [5].

Methodology of Project:
Methodology consist of following important thing that need to know before cure.
1. Area of study.
2. Identification of building cracks and their causes.
3. Location of crack.
4. Strength Assessment of that Building where crack is present.

Instruments and equipment:

 Saw
 Low viscosity monomers
 Resins
 Concrete
 Drill machine (to hole both sides of crack)
 Flexible sealant (for epoxy injection)
 Grinder
 Monomer (Methyl Methacrylate)

Expected result:
Our research work on this proposed project concludes that Cracks on buildings can
be handled by proper construction and modern techniques that should be used
after complete analysis and deep study of existing parameters of cracks. With old
methods it is difficult to control the effect of building cracks. We’ll conduct several
research and experiments to minimize the effect of such cracks by modern
methods and techniques and finally we’ll get better result as compare to old one.
