Philosophy of Teaching

I have never been a traditional learner nor do I think anyone is. Most classrooms

use the same teaching skills that have been implemented since our parents were kids.

Powerpoints have too many slides and lectures all class long is a good way to lose

students’ attention. Recently in the development of teaching new methods have been

put into action. More hands-on involvement in the classroom starting as young as

kindergarten with STEM/STEAM activities teaching the importance of science, math,

technology, and art. Important educational topics that go along with the future. The

introduction of flexible seating in the classroom takes away boring desks that cause

back pain switching them for Bosu balls, twisty chairs, even bean bags. This is the new

age of education that I take a lot of ideas from for my teaching philosophy.

If I were to develop a lesson it would consist of just this. Start off the day asking

about the students nothing educational yet just a check-in to see how everyone feels

and make the atmosphere comfortable. Then introduce the topic of the day with either

an educational video, bellringer or a short interactive powerpoint. Then the majority of

the time would be spent on the lesson. The lesson would consist of one hands-on

activity, a note worksheet to gather the overall information from the day, and a separate

group works to create team collaboration. We would finish off the day with either a book

or exit ticket. I would consistently check on the students while they are accomplishing

their tasks to make sure that they are getting the information and feel comfortable with

the work.
From personal experience, I have struggled in the classroom. The information

doesn’t come to me as fast as others causing me to fall behind, while I never reached

out for help because every time I did I became more confused. I have had a couple of

teachers that are extremely smart and knowledgeable about the topic that they are

teaching but lack the ability to teach. Just because the teacher knows the information

doesn’t mean that the student does. Teaching is meant to activate a kid’s brain. The

purpose of a teacher is to be the spearhead of education for the student at a particular

age. Each year students should be learning something new while still reflecting on the

past information they had learned the prior year. Good teachers don’t just tell

information they aid the development of the idea in the student’s brain.
