1. Problem Statement:
As we have many wireless devices nowadays, this increased the need of an all in one remote.
With so many wireless devices around the house, we do wish a better way to control them, so
we came up with the idea that is Universal IR remote for Home Appliances in which we can
control all the devices through a single remote.

2. Introduction and Background:

Our project is basically based on IR communication. Infrared (IR) communication is a widely
used and easy to implement wireless technology that has many useful applications. The most
prominent examples in day to day life are TV/video remote controls, motion sensors, and
infrared thermometers. With a simple IR transmitter and receiver, we can make remote
controlled robots, distance sensors, heart rate monitors, DSLR camera remote controls, TV
remote controls, and lots more.

Practically all consumer electronic devices in a household are controlled via infrared remote
controls. In particular media entertainment systems have a large number of functions that are
able to be controlled remotely. Consumers may have many devices and a number of Remote
Controls having various functions and layouts.
By combining these technologies, a single control interface on a smart phone and then provides
a new control interface to consumer’s home entertainment systems. Or any other devices that
are capable of being Infrared Remote Controlled.

3. Brief description of existing approaches:

ZigBee-based IR remote control repeater and its control message frame format
To control IR-based legacy consumer devices regardless of the line of sight, a small
ZigBee-based IR remote control repeater is attached near the IR receiving part of a legacy
consumer device. It receives the control message via ZigBee protocol and converts the
received message into IR signal which is transmitted to the legacy consumer device. To
be available for any IR-based consumer device without any modification, it should be
made universal and generalized. In this paper we propose the IR remote control repeater
and the control message frame format applicable to all types of IR-based legacy
consumer devices Many legacy consumer devices are controlled via IR remote controls.
A user needs one IR remote control per one legacy consumer device and has to
guarantee the line of sight towards legacy consumer devices.

Gesture-based universal optical remote control: concept, reconstruction principle and

recognition results
The concept of an easy-to-use optical remote control and results of gesture reconstruction and
recognition are presented. The hand-held universal remote control (“SmartPointer”) has a
pencil-like shape and emits infrared (IR) light with a particular spatial pattern. A cost-effective

receiver in the vicinity of the devices to be remotely controlled records the spatio-
intensity changes while a gesture is being carried out. From these intensity changes
in the receiver plane, the trajectory of the pattern is calculated and the gesture reconstructed.
This approach also helps eliminate intra- and interpersonal trajectory variabilities which might
be large for the same intended gesture. At present, the gesture test set comprises 24 intuitive
gestures (classes) including numerals and several characters for the control of basic
device functions. Results are derived from simulations and experiments carried out with 36
test persons aged from 7 to 85.
The aim of the project is to control IR based devices through Wi-Fi. Nowadays many devices are
based upon IR receiver like TV, setup box, air conditioner, DVD, home theater etc. and each
device consists of independent IR blaster (remotes) which is very difficult to store remotes at all
places. For every remote IR frequency is independent to others whereas for every device it need
a remote to control. This is smart IR device by which it can control all applications like TV, setup
box, air conditioner, DVD, Home theater etc. the entire application is based upon AVR
microcontroller and WiFi module and IR blaster. Where it can control multiple devices at a time
and also used by multiple users
Low cost smart glove for universal control of IR devices

In the paper we have seen that the students who have done work on this project have been come up
with an idea which is unique and easy to use. They have built a system which is controlled by gesture
recognition and which will communicate with user appliances. The device can be controlled using many
different gestures. Gesture signed were identified using simple contact sensors and is passed on to an
encoder, used to convert parallel data into serial data and the data then broad cast using the RF
transmitter. The main important thing they are using in this glove is different sensors for different
actions. The system described in this paper uses a custom designed, low cost sensors, called contact
sensors. Custom designed contact sensors are used which produces output only when they are in
contact with another sensor of similar type. These sensors are positioned on the fingertips of each
finger to uniquely identify gestures. In the design implemented, strips of copper foils are placed at the
tips of each finger, and thumb carries the highest potential, and rest of them carry zero potentials with
resistors grounded.

4. Proposed approach to solve the problem:

To ease consumer’s frustration and to make remote controls simpler, consumers are
able to use a Universal Infrared Remote Control that combines a number of remotes
into one.
The use of home wireless networks, Smart Phones and Tablets enabled with Wi-Fi has
grown. Wi-Fi communications can provide a control link to a Universal Infrared Remote
Control that can use multiple modules i.e manual and via Bluetooth app.
