Principles of Management
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
This course focuses on the foundations of management theory. Management is presented as a
discipline and as a process. The course introduces key issues of management from management
ethics to the essential skills of management. Major topic areas will include the foundations of
planning and decision- making, organizational design, managing change and innovation,
leadership, motivation, communications, supervision and control of operations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Explain the changing role of management, the basic principles of organizational design as
well as the different perspectives on change in the workplace
2. Discuss the dynamic environment of business and its effect on management
3. Outline the purpose of strategic operational planning and the tools and techniques used
4. Explain the concept of rationality and the role of groups in decision-making and
implementation
5. Distinguish between management, leadership and supervision
6. Explain the overriding principles of ethics in management

Key Dates:
Late assignment policy: Late assignments will receive a 30% deduction unless extensions have
been approved by instructor prior to due date. All work is due at the beginning of class. Prep
work is to prepare you for class discussion and activities, so you must submit your work before
class in order to participate in class. If your preparation work is not done, you will be asked to
leave class.

Notes:
2. Periodically the instructor may assign a problem in class for handing in, or a “pop” quiz
on the reading to ensure students are preparing for class. All will count and it will a
portion of the Active Participation grade.
3. Bring your textbook to every class.
4. Please be prepared for class, this includes but not limited to reading the chapter before
class.
5. If you are unable to write a midterm or final exam at the scheduled time, please discuss it
with me before the test is to be written. Otherwise, if you miss a test or exam, you will
receive a grade of zero.
6. Assignments are due on the given due date and time. Failure to hand in on time will result
in a grade of zero.
7. March 8th 2019 is the last day to withdraw, without academic penalty. After this date,
students withdrawing will receive an “F” grade.
8. Cell phone usage is not permitted during the class. Please be sure to turn off your cell
phone before the class begins.
9. Cell phones and electronic devices (except a non-programmable calculator), are not
permitted when tests and exams are being written.
10. Students are expected to write the final exam at its scheduled time, during the exam
period.
11. If students are using a laptop to take notes, no social media (i.e., facebook, msn
messenger, twitter, etc) is to be used in class as it is a distraction for not only the student,
but fellow students and the instructor.
