Advertising

Advertising is something I became interested in over the summer working in retail and seeing how

poorly the company I worked for was in the advertising department. Because I thought it was in the business

school, I never looked into changing my major until I realized it is housed in the journalism school. I made an

appointment to change it and felt less stressed about life in general and really happy that I was figuring out what

I wanted to do.

Starting with the skills and knowledge required for the career, I think it fits my personality. I like to

work under pressure, however I don’t necessarily like spontaneous events so anything medical wouldn’t be a

good fit for me. Retail is something I’m interested in, so I can definitely tie in my knowledge working in retail

with an advertising career. Moving onto the education requirements for the career, I only need four years. Four

years sounds and feels a lot better than the six or twelve that was needed for athletic training and surgery.

Financially, it takes a lot of stress and weight off my shoulders because my parents told me they would pay for

anything needed for my undergraduate degree, but anything after that I would have to get loans for. Looking at

my charts and comparing the three careers I chose, advertising is in the middle. Often I think about how much a

degree is actually worth, and for athletic training I feel as if the monetary value of it isn’t as strong as the pay is.

For advertising, it definitely seems worth it.

I am a very scheduled and organized person, therefore pretty much any job that requires having a desk

or cubicle would be good for me, and having deadlines to do things. Calendars are my best friends and I have

one with me at all times, even if it’s just writing notes about things I know I won’t end up attending.
Advertising is a field where you have to be creative, organized, and have good communication skills. Creativity

and organization are no issue, but communication skills I can definitely work on.
