Skill Development Programme on Iron Ore Pellet Processing

To fulfil the dream of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India & President, CSIR, New Delhi Shri
Narendra Modi, a two days “Skill development Programme on Iron Ore Pellet Processing”
was organised by CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar in
association with Pellet Manufacturers Association of India, New Delhi and Indian Institute of
Mineral Engineers, Bhubaneswar Chapter during 3-4th June, 2017 at CSIR-IMMT,
Bhubaneswar. The program was attended by the technicians and shop floor engineers of
various iron ore pellet manufacturers throughout India. The main motto of the program was
to impart and enhance the skills and improvise the technical knowledge of the working
technicians in the shop floor of the different pellet plants. This was being planned to fine tune
different operational activities of various pellet plant to enhance their productivity, so that
300 MTPA of steel production can be achieved by 2030 as per National Steel Policy-2017.

The program was inaugurated by Mr. S. S. Mohanty, Vice Chairman and Managing Director,
Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited, Jajpur, Odisha who is also a key member in Ministry of Steel
for framing steel policy and founder member of Steel Research and Technology Mission of
India (SRTMI). Mr. N.D.Rao, President, PMAI stress on the need for this type of training to
enhance the skill of technical people working in iron ore pelletisation industries. Mr. D.
Bhatanagar, General Secretary briefed about the activities of PMAI for benefit of iron ore
pelletisation plants in India. Shri. S. K. Mishra, Acting Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar
highlighted the need for industry and R&D institute partnership for the benefit of the nation.
Dr. S. K. Biswal, Chief Scientist & Head, Mineral Processing Department, CSIR-IMMT,
Bhubaneswar emphasized the need for collaboration in different activities in mineral
industries and particularly in iron ore pelletization which will help in achieving the target set
by Ministry of Steel. He also highlighted different R&D activities related to pellet industries
carried out and various facilities available at CSIR- IMMT which can be utilised by different
pellet industries in the interest of the nation. Different eminent personalities and industry
experts from pellet, iron and steel fraternity, equipment manufacturers presented their views,
deliberated upon the technical problems faced by the shop floor technicians, operators and
engineers and suggested suitable solutions in operation & maintenance of pellet plant. The
main aim of this type interactive sessions was to enhance their skill to mitigate day-to-day
problems faced in different pellet industry during operation & maintenance. The chief guest
in the concluding session Prof. D. D. Misra, Executive Chairman IIT(ISM) Dhanbad has
given valuable suggestions in regard to pelletisation process with respect to quality as well as
cost to participants and also resource persons. Dr. A. K. Sahu, Programme Coordinator and
Chief Scientist, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar has proposed vote of thanks to participants,
resource persons, guests as well as organising committee.
