Task 1: Written Essay

1.1 List five different approaches to self-manage learning

in bullet point and evaluate three of the approaches to

self-Managed Learning.

Definition of Self-managed learning

Self-management learning is the process through which a person or an individual can manage
his or her own learning. It also indicates the learning process of an organization or a company
which is suitable for their objectives and goals and through which their stuff can develop
their skills with the relation to the goal of that company (Throop and Castellucci, 2011).

For example, Limerick City uses self-management learning to improve the skills of their
staffs. This program helps the staff to use new technologies and new methods to fulfill the
objectives of the organization.

Approaches to self-managed learning

There are some approaches to self-management learning in the practical field of different
companies. Here five approaches are listed below:

 Learning through research

 Learning from others
 Mentoring/coaching
 Seminars
 Conferences

Three major approaches out of these five can be discussed as follows:

Learning through research

Some companies enable their staffs to research about different sectors which are related to
their objectives. This enables the staffs to collect information, analyze that information and
make decisions on the basis of that analysis. It helps staffs to learn new things, face new

scenarios, and to develop their skills through which they can fulfill the objectives of the
company. It is the adaptive learning method through which staffs can adapt new techniques
and systems. Though it is very effective, but it is very costly and time-consuming process of a
rising company (Schermerhorn, 2013).

Learning from others

It is the process of asking directly about different issues to the superior or the colleagues who
are experienced about those issues. It also refers to the observation of others work and the
way of their working. It enables a staff to learn new works and understand the way of
working. For example, an assistant of a local state agency can learn by observing the way of
working of a current property manager. The problem of this method is, staffs can learn wrong
ways of working with their superiors and colleagues.

Learning through mentoring

It is the process of learning by the supervision of superiors or senior managers. It enables the
staffs to get knowledge and develop their skills of a particular profession. It is a very
effective approach to self-management learning (Pearson and Wilson, 2001).

From the above discussion, the most effective and efficient approach to self-management
learning is learning through mentoring. It is less costly and less time-consuming approach of
self-management learning for the local state agency. It enables the company to develop their
staff's skills in a short time and less cost.

1.2 From the scenario propose 5 different ways in which

lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could

be encouraged.

Lifelong learning is the method of continuous learning by a person or an individual in his or

her personal and professional life. It ensures the learning for a long time by an individual.

Encouraging self-directed learning

Encouraging self-directed learning refers to the process where an individual focus on the
development of his or her own skills. He or she try to find out the needs of his or her
skills and try to find out the way to fulfill those needs (McLeod, Fisher and Hoover,
2003).

For example, a property manager of a local state agency always tries to handle more
dealings so that he or she can develop his or her skills by fulfilling the needs.

Continuing professional development

It is the process where an individual takes the initiative to develop his or her skills
continuously. In this process, it evaluates the previous knowledge and skills and
tries to maintain continuous development of the skills by fulfilling the objectives
and goals of the company. For example, as an assistant of a local state agency, I
try to develop my skills continuously so that I can be promoted to the next level.

Linking higher education with industry

It is the process of linking higher skills and education through different training and
specific courses within or outside the company which is related to the property
management (Larrivee, 2009). For example, as an assistant of a local state agency, I
will try to get more knowledge through different courses related to the real state with a
view to achieving the next level.

Further education

It refers to the post-graduation degree related to the specific field. For example, as an
assistant of a local state agency, I can get an MBA degree in the Property Development
Management.

1.3 Evaluate the benefits of self-managed learning to the

individual and organization.

Coaching refers to the direct teaching of the specific skills and knowledge of a particular
profession. It indicates the process of specialized teaching for a particular profession. For
example, specific course of real estate, professional course of property development and
management etc. are the specific courses which an individual can achieve by coaching.

Mentoring indicates the supervision by the superior or the senior managers to direct the staffs
of a company. Staffs can learn under the supervision of the superior or senior managers of the
company (Kruckeberg, Amann and Green, 2011). For example, the senior managers of local
state agency supervise and give direction to the staff and assistance to fulfill the objectives of
the company.

Benefits of Coaching and Mentoring to individual

Coaching and mentoring are the most effective approaches to self-management

learning. It enables an individual to learn from the best people of specific sectors.
Through these, an individual can understand the nature of working and fulfill the
objectives of their own as well as the objectives of the company. It increases the
confidence level of an individual and enables him to develop his or her skills (Johns,
2012).

Benefits of Coaching and Mentoring to organization

Coaching and mentoring enables an organization to develop the skills of their staffs.

3.3 Reflect critically on own learning against original aims and

objectives set in the development plan

Own progress on areas of development:

The development plan and other objectives will not work properly if I focus more on my own
learning than the main objectives of the organization. Here the own progress on the areas of
development may be the development of motivational skill, development of high ambition, as
a leader, and lead the staffs forcefully to reach the personal objectives which will go against
the fulfillment of original goals and objectives.

(1) Short term objective needs

One of the most important and short term objectives is to increase potential buyer in 7%.
Some of my personal objectives can hamper this main objective. The personal objectives like
development leadership skill may indicate the unethical forceful leading to the staffs to
achieve the main goals which will destroy the efficiency level of the staffs and may affect the
fulfillment of main objectives.

(2) Long term objective needs

One of the important long-term objectives is to increase sales up to 5%. My recent

motivational and communication skill may hamper this objective. If I cannot communicate
with the existing and new buyers and cannot convince them effectively then the sales will fall
down and it will be very difficult to increase. I need to motivate the sales department of the
organization so that they focus more on the objective of sales.

Task 4

4.1 Select solutions to work-based problems

Work-based problems that are problem within the organization is the most critical
problem for an organization. The problem of the local state agency can be solved by
the following basic generic problem-solving method:

Problem identification

To solve the problems, at first state agency need to identify their problems. The
major problems can be listed below:

 Underperformance of the Staffs

 Losing actual and potential customers to the competitors
 Missing deadlines of the projects
 No development programs through CPD for staffs
 Poor communications between employees and employers
 High level of turnover
 Reduced productivity and Poor performance

In this case, the researcher will focus on the poor communication problem between
employees and employers.

Generating alternative solutions

Unit 13: Personal and Professional Development – January 2017

London School of Science & Technology

There is some various solution which can be used by the local state agency. These solutions
can be listed below:

 A state agency can control its staffs and employees to communicate properly and
effectively.
 It can arrange different training program to train an employee to develop good
communication skills.
 Can arrange continuous supervision and mentoring the staffs of the company.
 Apply different communication theories

Evaluating

Supervision and mentoring will be the best and cost effective solution for the state agency.
Basically, it will take no extra time to train the staffs of the organization, it will work
automatically when the staffs are being busy in their work (Hughes and Youngson, 2009).

Selecting an alternative

The best alternative solution for the state agency will arrange different training program for
developing the communication skills of the staffs. Though it is costlier than any other
approach but it is very effective due to solving these kinds of problems. If it does not work
then the agency can apply different communication theories internally.

Implementing

The implementation must be done effectively and efficiently so that the company can train to
face the recent problems of the company. It must be implemented as soon as possible
(DeCenzo and Silhanek, 2002).

Following up on the solutions

The state agency must monitor the situations after solving or implementing the processes. It
will enable them to find out the actual result and the most recent situation of the organization
through which they can find out the gap between implementation and can solve those as soon
as possible.

4.3, D3 Evaluate and use effective time management

strategies

Time management Strategy is the method of managing time in an effective way

which leads the organization to the ultimate success. It will help the organization
to achieve the goals and objectives within a predefined time. There are some
strategies to manage the time of an organization. The first strategy is Prioritising
workloads. It refers to complete the important job first. The second strategy is Setting work
objectives (Daft, 2014). It enables the state agency to complete the work in time by
evaluating the objectives. it also ensures the productivity of time. Using time effectively
is another strategy which ensures the proper using of time and it leads an organization to
the point where they can waste their time. Making and keeping appointments enables a
company to make appointments for different works so that they can complete within
time. The last strategy is Reliable estimates of task time which mean estimating the
required time for different work (Bolton, 2011). These all strategies are very effective
in the time management process. A local state agency can apply these to manage their
time. But if we talk about the best then it will be the Reliable estimates of task time
because it ensures the proper use of time more effectively than any other strategies.
