LEARNING PLAN

Subject Area/Level: Mathematics 10 Date/s: June 01, 2018 Week No. 1

Unit Topic: Sequences and Series Quarter No. 1 Lesson No.2
Reference/s: E-Math 10, Oronce and Mendoza
Instructional Materials: Power point, Illustration board

I. Learning Competency/ies II. Learning Objectives

a. Generates patterns a. Supply the missing numbers in a sequence.
b. Evaluate expression involving sequence.

III. Preliminaries: B. Review

A. Drill Have a review on recognition of patterns.
“SKIP COUNT CHALLENGE”
Let the students answer the challenge within 2 minutes.

IV. Lesson Development:

A. ACTIVITY/MOTIVATION (Show me the number)
Show number sequences and let the students identify missing number/s.

1. 9, 18, 27, ____, 45

2. 99, 199, 299, ___, 499

B. ANALYSIS (Inquiry Approach)

Ask the students:
1. What have you observed from the prior activity?
2. Why is it important to recognize patterns?
3. How are patterns used in the sequences of numbers?

C. ABSTRACTION (Learning Discussion Method)

Discuss the different terms and word problems that would lead to better understanding.

A sequence maybe generated from shapes, patterns and rules.

Understanding mathematical patterns allows someone to identify such patterns when they first appear.
Patterns allow someone to make educated guesses.

A number sequence is a list of numbers having a first number, a second number, a third number, and so on called the
terms of the sequence.

Finite Sequence – having finite number of terms.

Infinite Sequence – having infinite number of terms.

Example#1.
What are the next two terms of each sequence?
a. 4, 7, 10, 13, ____, _____

ASSURED, CONSISTENT, AND QUALITY EDUCATION Page 1

Let the students analyze and generate patterns to answer the problem.

Ask them, how did they come up with their answers?

Example #2.

List all the indicated terms of each finite sequence.

an = 2n2 – 1 for 1 < n < 5

Explain to the students that expressions can also be used as patterns.

Example #3.
Find the 17th term of the sequence.
8, 16, 24…

Explain the importance of using a formula in finding the nth term of a sequence.
Examples:
If Linda deposits $1300 in a bank at 7% interest compounded annually, how much will be in the bank 17 years
later?

D. VALUES INTEGRATION

how do you make a sequence/order with regards to your schedule to develop time management?

E. APPLICATION (Teach a friend)

Practice Exercises
What are the next two terms of each sequence?
a. 4, 7, 10, 13, ____, _____

List all the indicated terms of each finite sequence.

b. an = 2n2 – 1 for 1 < n < 5

List all the indicated terms of each finite sequence.

c. an = 2n2 – 1 for 1 < n < 5

V. Evaluation: V. Assignment:

I. Supply the missing terms in a sequence. Answer Test III on p. 22.

1. 8, 13, 18, ___, 28, __
2. 1, -1, 1, -1 ___

II. Evaluate each expression.

3. 3n – 2

if n = 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
