Experience Design Proposal: Experiencing Music Through Inclusion and Diversity

Designer: Xaiver Williams
* Technologies Used:
 Makey-Makey: This software will be used as a circuit between the coding
software and the project itself. The connection will be made by using aluminum
foil and five color coded wires that will connect to the Makey-Makey as shown
below.

 Scratch: This software is a programming site that uses blocked coding sequences
to create music. This is where the programing of the different cords will get their
“notification” of what sound to make when the circuit is activated. The example
of this coding that is used for my project is pictured below.

 GarageBand: This app will be used to allow the ambient noise to play on a loop. I
plan to download the sounds that I want into the system that way I can have both
the scratch app and GarageBand on one computer.
* Learning Goal:

 MU:Cr1.1.T.Ia Generate melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas for compositions

or improvisations using digital tools.

 MU:Cr2.1.T.Ia Select melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas to develop into a

larger work using digital tools and resources.

 MU:Cr3.1.T.Ia Drawing on feedback from teachers and peers, develop and

implement strategies to improve and refine the technical and expressive aspects of

draft compositions and improvisations.

 VA MUS SOL HIB.19-02 - describing ways in which culture and technology influence

the development of instruments, instrumental music, and instrumental music styles;

* Assessment:

 I plan to collect meaningful data by surveying individuals on how well they

interpreted the concept of the project, overall experience, and if the first three

learning goals were achieved. I will do this by using google forms and will use

my iPad for the guest to use at the event.

* Project Overview and Rationale:

 This project is meant to use two of the five senses to promote inclusion and

diversity. While one of the most pressing issues in today’s society is racial

inequality, I felt led to tackle this inequality by painting wood hands to mirror the

hands of races in America. While the race is an issue faced in our nation, there are

also issues that students are facing in our school system besides race. The current

focus on Learning disabilities within our school system is minimum to none.

Whether it is special needs, autism, ADD, Hearing or Visual loss, there is a

disadvantage to the musical experience these students can have because of this

situation. Combining both of the two, I decided to create something that would

help promote the awareness of inclusion, while also creating something that

would help students feel included in the music-making process by being able to

touch the hands that are on the board. With the hands painted different colors, I

intended to allow the message that everyone can create music no matter your

racial or ethnic background. Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a

beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is a success.” Despite

the inequality for the disability, together we can create meaningful music.

* Plan for Success:

 In order for this project to be successful I need to finish the coding for the sounds

to happen. Once that is finish, I can complete the project by placing the hands into

position and create the circuit for them to work. All of my classes have been

canceled on Thursday (11/21), so I hope to have the project done that night! Once

it is complete, I will use Friday as a testing day with some of my friends in

Wayland Hall.
