Pressure 2017

1. The figures shows a block of weight 30 N placed on a table in three different orientations.
a) Calculate the pressure exerted by the block in each orientation.
b) Explain the relationship between the orientation of an object and the pressure exerted by it on the
table.

2. Hidayah has a mass of 50 kg. She has two pairs of shoes which are high-heeled shoes and sport shoes.
The high-heeled shoes cover 500 cm2 of floor area and the sport shoes cover 1500 cm2 of floor area.
a) Calculate the pressure by the high-heeled shoe and the sport shoes on the floor respectively.
b) Which of the two pairs of shoes is suitable to be worn on the beach? Give a reason.

3. The water level in the water tank in the diagram below is 8 m above the tap. What is the pressure that

forces water out from the tap?

4. The deep end of a swimming pool has a depth of 2 m. What is the pressure exerted by the water on
the bottom at this depth? The density of water is 1000 kgm -3.

5. A rectangular block with base area A of 25 cm 2 is submerged in water of density 1000 kgm -3 as shown
in the diagram.
a) Find the
i) pressure p1 due to the water acting on the top surface of the block.
ii) pressure p2 due to the water acting on the bottom surface of the block. (Take gravitational
field strength, g = 10 Nkg-1).
b) What is the resultant pressure on the object?
c) Calculate the
i. force exerted by the water on the top surface of the block.
ii. force exerted by the water on the bottom surface of the block
