How to use the BAT in practice?

Before you use the BAT in practice, it is important to have some rules of thumb in the

keep mind.

Rule of thumb 1. No diagnosis of burnout

BAT sets no diagnosis of burnout, but is a measure of burnout symptoms.

Therefore, we always refer below to "the degree of burn-out 'rather than to' burn-

out 'in itself. The manual is about to read next.

"Of course there can only and exclusively on the basis of the BAT no burnout

be diagnosed. This requires comprehensive assessment with

including a case history and diagnostic interview by a dedicated

trained professional. The BAT can be a valuable tool in

individual his assessment process. "

BAT Manual - Version 1.3, p. 94

A rule of thumb 2. The lumbar l of differ versions of the BAT

BAT can be used both for individual purchase groupwise

decrease. Whether you decrease the BAT individually or in a group, you can

also choose between two versions:

• Work-related version of the BAT

This version is specifically aimed at ' Workers'. The questions refer whatsoever

specific to their workplace.

• Overall, context-free version of the BAT

This version is specifically aimed at ' those currently not working

to be'. Because they are absent for long periods of work, they have no or

binding hardly any more. Except for the scale 'mental

distance 'statements refer not in the workplace.

In addition, questions about the secondary symptoms always context-free.

4
BURNOUT ASSESSMENT TOOL INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Rule of thumb 3. BAT measuring burnout symptoms

BAT measuring burnout symptoms and not the causes or consequences. For this

are other questionnaires - eg. The Energy Compass ( found in

Appendix 1 of this manual) or Short Psychological Inventory to Monitor

hazards ( SIMPH; Notelaers, White, Van Veldhoven & Vermunt, 2007).

In addition, BAT is not suitable for making a differential diagnosis. Through

Just to take the BAT no distinction can be made between burn-

Out on the one hand and depression, enthusiasm, workaholism, and other perceptions

work on the other. Before you need to use separate questionnaires that

Measuring concepts like the 4DSQ (Terluin, 1996), Uwe (Schaufeli & Baker, 2004)

DUWAS (Schaufeli et al., 2011).

1. completing the BAT

Completing the BAT is simple and takes up to 5 minutes. BAT

a paper-and-pencil "questionnaire, so no online tool. You can of course itself

choose to integrate BAT in your digital environment and program

as an online tool which allows participants automatically get to see their score.

Depending on the goal you have in mind (eg. Support for diagnosis,

use in groups, etc.), it may be desirable for certain terms in the BAT (e.g.

' Burnout Assessment Tool ' or ' exhaustion) not to mention. As in the manual

Indeed, this can be described by the respondent (s) have a negative connotation

calls.

"Due to the fact that the term 'burnout' among respondents usually

evokes a negative connotation, this term is not included in the title of the

questionnaire. Instead, it is the neutral 'research work perception "(or

'Mental perception "for general release) is used."

BAT Manual - Version 1.3, p. 79

Therefore you will find in this manual a fill-in version of the BAT without

indication of the title or names of the dishes.

BURNOUT ASSESSMENT TOOL INSTRUCTION MANUAL

1.1. Instruction

There are two instructions depending on the version used. The difference between

both is in reference to the work.

Work-related version

The following statements relate to * how to experience your work and how you

thereby feels. Please indicate how often each statement applies to you by

always tick the most appropriate answer.

* Note: You can also choose 'you' instead of 'you'.

General release

The following statements relate to * how you feel. Please indicate how

often each statement applies to you by getting the most appropriate response

tick.

* Note: You can also choose 'you' instead of 'you'.

1.2. scoring

The statements in both versions are assessed in the same way:

Never Rarely Sometimes Often Always

1 2 3 4 5

1.3. The questions

The BAT contains 5 dimensions, in the form of sub-scales.

• Four core dimensions each with four shells ( exhaustion, mental detachment,

cognitive disorder, emotional disturbance) which separately or together counted

can be interpreted.

• One secondary dimension consisting of two scales ( psychic

stress symptoms and psychosomatic stress symptoms) which ever

aggregated and as a single unit to be interpreted.

6
BURNOUT ASSESSMENT TOOL INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Figure 1: The structure of the BAT

How many bowls you decrease depends on the goal you have in mind. In the

guide we read about.

"The BAT total score can be used to determine the degree of burnout

set, while the scores for the four core dimensions, possibly supplemented with

Secondary symptoms may further refine this. such

Differentiation will be particularly important for individual diagnostic use

BAT. "

BAT Manual - Version 1.3, p. 80

Wish you so only the degree of burnout 2 fix, you have enough to

the average score combined for the four core dimensions. Do you want a lake

differentiated image, you can also make a separate assessment for each

the five dimensions (four core dimensions and one secondary dimension).

2 Technically, this concerns "the degree of burnout symptoms, but to make as simple as possible this manual, we talk about" the degree of burn-out '

1.4. Interpretation

While completing the BAT takes only 5 minutes, requires

correct interpretation of course more time.

As mentioned above, you may, depending on your goal, different scores

calculate and interpret. The manual is about following explanation.

"The average scale scores of the BAT scales are calculated by the

scores on scale all the items by adding to one another and dividing by the number of

Items from which the respective shell is made. If scoring categories

are used: 1 'never', 2 'rarely', 3 'sometimes', 4 'often' and 5 'always'. Which

means that the value of the scale scores ranging from 1 t / m 5. Due to the

BAT score on all items or counting and dividing by 23 the total score

obtained, which also lies between 1 and 5. The same applies to 10

secondary symptoms. "

BAT Manual - Version 1.3, p. 80

In essence, you must calculate an average score every time - which always between 1 and

5 is - before you can interpret it. On the basis of the fictitious respondents

X, Y and Z we explain this below.

Step 1. The average score (s) calculate

• If you want to determine the degree of burnout, So you take the total score on the

four core dimensions

O First you count on every score on each question

respondent X Y Z

Total score (TOTAL - NUCLEAR) 55 60 75

11
BURNOUT ASSESSMENT TOOL INSTRUCTION MANUAL

O Thereafter we divide this by the number of questions - in this case 23 - and

We conclude on two decimal places.

respondent X Y Z

Average (TOTAL - NUCLEAR) 2:39 2.61 3:26

• If you want a more differentiated picture, you need for each

five dimensions to separately calculate an average score

O You hereby follows the same steps as above. First you count the score

each question for the relevant dimension and v ubsequently share your

that score by the number of questions that dimension.

Dimension Mental Exhaustion emotional cognitive Secondary

distance disruption disruption symptoms

Number of 8 4 or 5 * 5 5 10
questions

Note: * The global version of this dimension BAT has only four questions.

O Take for example the dimension exhaustion

• Then we add the score of each question in this dimension.

respondent X Y Z

Total score (EXHAUSTION) 20 25 28

• Because depletion contains eight questions, go so each score parts

by eight.

respondent X Y Z

Average (EXHAUSTION) 2:50 3:13 3:50

Step 2. Interpreting the average score (s)

You can average score (s) you calculated in step 1 in various ways

interpret. You can choose standard or limits 3.

3 More information about the distinction between norms and values can be found in the manual BAT under Part III: Practical Use

12
BURNOUT ASSESSMENT TOOL INSTRUCTION MANUAL

• Choose for standards then compare your score (s) the average Flemish

or Dutch workforce. There are thereby four categories: low,

medium, high and Very high. "Low" means that the corresponding score

with the 25% lowest scoring Flemish or Dutch workers, and 'high'

that it corresponds to the 25% highest scoring employees.

O Standards are interesting because they provide information about how the score

of an individual or a group is related with respect to a certain

reference and therefore are often interesting for example. Organizations

wanting to know if they 'scored better or worse than the norm.

O The disadvantage However, they do not know or really score

is "problematic". So you can eg. High scores relative to

Flemish average worker without a problem this score

forms.

• Choose for limits then compare your score (s) in patients with

severe burnout symptoms.

O Limits are therefore of interest because they indicate when one

"Problematic" scores: score one too high or not? They therefore play

an important role in individual clinical diagnosis.

O Based limits are three categories,

analogously to a traffic light: green ( no risk of burn-out) Orange

(Risk of burn-out) or red ( very high risk of burn-out).

For the work-related version of the BAT are there standards ( Flanders &

Netherlands) and limits ( Flanders) available. For the overall

version of the BAT there are only limits ( Flanders) available. Others

norms and values are under development.
