Plantation Park Elementary First Grade Math Date: 10-17-19

Teacher: Mattie Spriggs Time: 1:20 p.m. – 2:50 p.m.

Lesson: Mod 1. Topic G. Review
Objective(s): Students will be able to write corresponding subtraction number sentences with 80% accuracy.
Standards: 1.OA.B.4. Understand subtraction as an unknown addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8
by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
1.OA.C.5. Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2)
Materials: Expo Markers, personal white boards, Fall Math Common Core Pages 8, 9, 17, pencils, clipboards
Application Problem: - Whole Group
*Show word problem on the projector.
“8 acorns fell off a tree onto the ground. 4 were taken by Squirrels. How many acorns are still on the ground?”
1. CUBE the equation
C- circle the numbers
U- underline the question
B- box in the math words
E- evaluate
S- solve

 Write the number bond.

 Find the missing part by counting on
 Write the subtraction equation.
Answer: 8 – 4 = 4

4 4

 Half will be on the chrome books learning through Zearn, and the other half will be in small group with
teacher.
 The Lightening group will be on the chrome books first.
Concept Development:
Give a scenario, for example:
There were 6 frogs in a pond. 2 jumped onto lily pads. How many were still in the pond?

1. Draw the total in a subitizing way.

2. Mark out the number of frogs that left the group.
3. Draw and complete number bond.
4. Use the parts and whole number to form a subtraction equation.
5. Use the words “related equation” to write an addition equation. Explain that the largest number is almost
always first.
Example:

4 + 2 = 6: 6
2+4=6
6–4=2
6–2=4 4 2

Repeat the process by telling other change unknown stories for students to solve. Be sure to have students
separate one addend from the other. They may use any method we have learned. For example, the students may
use any of the following methods: counting on, drawing subitizing circles, the number path.

*Be sure to review each equation.

Independent work: Fact Families #1 Worksheet. (Fall Math Common Core Pg. 17) First two problems will be
done together. The students will finish the rest of the page and flip over to obtain the “Exit Ticket.”
Exit Ticket: Number Sentence and Bond Worksheet (Fall Math Common Core Pg. 9) The student will
complete the exit ticket independently and self -assess.
Homework/Assignment: Let’s Make Numbers (Fall Math Common Core Pg. 8)
Assessment: Observation, oral responses, individual practice, exit tickets
Accommodations: Preferential seating, extended time, peer assistance
