BMKG to Install New

Earthquake and Tsunami
Detectors Across Bali
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and
Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will install new
devices to detect earthquakes and tsunami across
Bali next month, as the agency hopes to match the
island's system with that of the Indonesian capital
of Jakarta.
“We're planning to make Bali a back-up. Should the capital city
becomes ineffectual in the case of a disaster, so Bali with the
same infrastructure will be the [alternative] information center for
disasters in Indonesia,” said BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati,
as quoted by state news agency Antara.
Dwikorita explained that the new devices will be installed in
Bangli, Karangasem and Buleleng, as well as Nusa Penida
island. She said the new devices would be able to issue an
earlier warning and quicker detection.
“Right now, the installed sensors are mostly for high-magnitude
earthquakes, and we will reinforce this with censors for low-
magnitude earthquakes, so even small tremors would be
detected,” she added.
Last Thursday, northern Bali was struck with a 5.1-magnitude
earthquake, tremors of which were felt in other parts of the
island, including Denpasar.
According to a report from Tribun-Bali, more than 60 houses
were damaged in the quake, with the Regional Disaster
Management Agency (BPBD) in Buleleng putting the total cost
of material damages at IDR1.6 billion (US$114,021).

The 14-man Australian squad
selected for the first Test against
Pakistan at the Gabba has left plenty
of people baffled, including Cameron
Bancroft himself.
In a surprise move, Bancroft was
selected in the squad for the season,
despite last week admitting it would be
“highly unlikely” he would make the
squad.
Hohns said Bancroft was picked as
the extra batsman due to his
ability to bat anywhere from
opener to no. 6 but the
decision has still baffled
legends and fans alike.

innings of the Australia A tour
match against Pakistan as
the side were bowled out for
122.
He only had the opportunity
after Nic Maddison withdrew
for mental health reasons.
Despite being a club
teammate of Bancroft,

Australian star himself that
he was selected in the squad.
“I'm absolutely surprised that he's
been picked because he's had a
technical flaw since the Ashes series
and I don't feel as though he's rectified
it and I don't feel as though he's spent
enough time in the middle in Shield
cricket,” he told SEN.
“I think a few others have been hard
done by. I think Pucovski would have
been in front of him if it wasn't for the
mental issues that he's pulled himself
out with as well. Big call to put
Bancroft in.”
The decision saw Marcus Harris and
Usman Khawaja dropped — despite
Bancroft's miserable start to the
season.
While Harris has 266 runs in five
innings at an average of 53.20,
Khawaja has a horror record of 59
runs at 11.80.
But even that surpasses Bancroft's 57
runs at 11.40 to start the Shield
season which had some fans baffled.

Hogg believes Khawaja is a spent
force for Australia — unless he can put
a mountain of runs of the board.
But Hogg's biggest criticism came in
for Joe Burns with “too much between
bat and pad for an opener”.
Burns has 202 runs at an average of
40.40 this year but he was cleaned
bowled for a golden duck in the first
innings with Hogg saying Pakistan
were “all over him in the second
innings as well”.
While he admitted he wanted Burns in
the team, he felt for Harris.
Hogg said while Burns has often been
praised for his four centuries in 16
Tests, he has had plenty of scores
under 10.
“I don't understand why they've gone
back to (Joe) Burns when Burns
hasn't really knocked the house down
with a mountain of runs,” Hogg told
SEN Afternoons.
“Harris is in form in Shield cricket, he
is scoring runs left, right and centre at
Shield level. You pick Australian
teams from performances at Shield
level and they haven't done this – I
don't think Joe Burns is ready with the
technique as I said earlier today.
“With the bowling that Pakistan have
got, I just think they'll be licking their
lips with Joe Burns at the top of the
order hoping they can get into Steve
Smith with a hard new ball.”

Robertson spoke to Fox Sports News
and admitted that he though Langer
would back Bancroft and he would
open the batting during the Test at the
expense of Burns.

“To me, they're probably saying 'we

causing for the 30-35 year-old people
up to 70 who have watched cricket for
a long period are lost.
“It's an interesting way selections is

told the news.
The 21-year-old university student
can be forgiven for needing a moment
to compose himself after hearing he'd
just given up a potential $50,000
payday.
Arrington-Holmes has a bright future
ahead of him in the field of medicine,
but he is going to have to do
something drastic to ever be
remembered for something other
than being the guy that gave away
a piece of sporting immortality for
peanuts.
Arrington-Holmes has been
revealed as the one-time owner of
the racquet used by Serena
Williams when she blew up during
her 2018 US Open final loss to
Naomi Osaka.
The racquet, which Williams
demolished on Arthur Ashe
Stadium, has found its way to an
online sporting memorabilia
auction site.
The problem is, the auction
development is news to Arrington-
Holmes.
The long-serving US Open ball boy
has revealed to The New York
Times he was given the racquet by
Williams after the turbulent
women's final and eventually sold it
for $500.
The artefact of sporting legend is
now being auctioned off online by
Goldin Auctions this week.
Goldin Auctions founder Ken
Goldin has said the item could reach a
price of up to $50,000 when it
concludes on December 7, despite
bidding beginning at $2000.
Arrington-Holmes has admitted to The
Times, he wishes he could go back
and never sell the racquet the way he
did.
“Looking back I wish I'd had someone
help me with the process,” he said. “I
was not familiar with how any of this
works. I just wanted to get rid of it.”
As a student, he says, some spare
spending money was all he was
thinking about.
As a ball boy at the US Open since
2013, Arrington-Holmes says he
developed a casual friendship with
Williams and was particularly fond of

players that took the time to learn his
name and greet him when their paths
crossed at Flushing Meadows.
After speaking to her after the match
and posing for a photo with the 2018
US Open runner-up, Arrington-

think much about it again until this
year when he sold it to Brigandi Coins
and Collectibles in Manhattan.
He jumped at the offer of $500 and
handed over the racquet as well as a
witness statement letter of genuine
authenticity about the origins of the
famous fluro green Wilson racquet.
He says he didn't think of it again until
contacted by the New York Times
recently where he soon learnt he
could have turned his memorabilia
item into $50,000.
Ouch.
The racquet is expected to reach such
a high price because of its place at the
centre of one of tennis' greatest
controversies.
Williams broke the racquet after
slamming it down hard into the court's
surface during a moment of frustration
during the second set against Osaka.

After losing the first set, the tense
contest reached boiling point when
Williams was handed a warning for
being coached from the stands by
long-time mentor Patrick
Mouratoglou. Williams famously
failed to grasp in that moment that
she'd actually been warned.
A few minutes later Williams was
handed a second code violation when
she pulverised her racquet. She was
docked a point as penalty for the two
violations.
After sitting down to replace the
racquet, Williams walked back onto
the court to only then realise she'd
forfeited the point as a result of the
two warnings.
After spinning around and angrily
complaining to chair umpire Carlos
Ramos, Williams was issued a
game penalty for a third code
violation when she called the match
official a “thief”.
All hell broke loose from there as
Williams demanded tournament
officials hear her cries.
Williams also demanded an apology
from Ramos during their argument.
“You owe me an apology. I've never
cheated in my life. I have a daughter
and stand for what's right for her,”
she said.
In the press conference following
the match, Williams doubled down
on the comments.
“I've seen other men call other
umpires several things. I'm here
fighting for women's rights and for
women's equality,” she said.
“For me to say 'thief' and for him to
take a game, it made me feel like it
was sexist.
“He's never taken a game from a man
because they said 'thief'. For me it
blows my mind.”
She was hit with a verbal abuse game
penalty for her outburst and did not
shake Ramos' hand after the match.

The unnamed 52-year-
old, from China, smoked
continuously for 30 years.
After being declared
brain dead, medics set
about removing his
organs, which he opted to
donate.
However, they quickly realised his
lungs were too diseased to be
used.
The viral clip, which has been
viewed more than 25 million times,
has been called the “best anti-
smoking ad ever”.
“Many smokers have lungs which
look like this,” Dr Chen Jingyu,
from Wuxi People's Hospital in
Jiangsu said.
“Our team decided to reject these
lungs for transplant.
“Look at these lungs, do you still
have the courage to smoke?”
After the patient was declared
brain dead, tests initially
suggested his lungs would be
suitable for donation.
“Oxygenation index tests were
okay, but when we harvested the
NOVEMBER 2019 organs, we realised we wouldn't
be able to use them,” Dr Jingyu
said.

revamped Davis Cup
began a new era in
Madrid.
It wasn't all perfect,
though, with Gerard
Pique, Barcelona player
and co-founder of Kosmos — the
group that spent $A4.4 billion on a
25-year deal to makeover the
longstanding tournament — taking
to Twitter to defend the revolution
on opening day.
Changes to the Davis Cup had
already been met with some
opposition in the lead-up, so
criticism was to be expected on the
first day of action, which saw
Russia, Croatia, Belgium,
Canada, Italy, and Colombia
compete.
One-time French Open semi-
finalist, and now writer Dewulf Filip
took to Twitter to highlight the
empty seats prior to Belgium v
Colombia.
“Not the biggest crowd...yet. 15
people sitting on this side of the
stands,” Filip tweeted.
Of all people, it was Pique who hit
back; keen to quell any
criticism.“Are we sure there are
just 15??” Pique asked, along with
a photo of a full stadium.
Current pro Alize Cornet replied:
“Dear Gerard, I can see that you've
never been to a REAL Davis Cup!
And that's not it.”
The Times' tennis correspondent
Stuart Fraser was in Madrid, and

Walker and Farruko. Shakira will
perform in the closing ceremony

modernisation being promoted by
the new organisers.
The goal is to make the traditional
team competition more attractive -
and lucrative - by having all nations
play at the same time and in a
single venue.
The change helped attract new
sponsors and made it easier for
top players to include the Davis
Cup in their busy schedules. Prize
money of nearly $20 million in

Critics, including some
players, complained the
new format would take
away from the great

Max Verstappen wins the race of the year in Brazil —
but you don't know the half of it
Max Verstappen led from
pole in Brazil and won the
race. Sounds simple, right?
However, from lights out to
the chequered flag,
absolutely everything
happened in between.
A late-race Safety Car following a
hydraulics failure for Valtteri Bottas
left both Red Bull and Mercedes
gambling on the result, and
opened the door to some drama –
and a Ferrari incident that stole
headlines.
World champion Lewis Hamilton
started third, with Sebastian Vettel
sandwiched between Verstappen
and the world champion. At the
start, Hamilton snatched second
at Turn 1 as Verstappen cleared
out at the front.
There was early drama for Daniel
Ricciardo, whose ambitious move
on Kevin Magnussen on Lap 8
ended with the Haas driver facing
the wrong way, with the Renault
forced in for a new front wing. The
Australian was then hit with a five-
second penalty for the incident.
One story was how Charles
Leclerc vaulted from 14th after he
not only butchered his chance at
pole, but also copped a 10-spot
grid penalty due to an engine
change. By Lap 12, he was up to
sixth.
Mercedes brought Hamilton in on
Lap 21 for new soft tyres, but Red
Bull looked to stave off the
undercut and pitted Verstappen a
lap later. However, the Dutchman
nearly came to grief when Williams
released Robert Kubica into the
path of the Red Bull, with Hamilton

However, as the German moved
left, the slightest of touches saw
both red cars cop punctures, and
the Scuderia squad could only
watch on in shock as Vettel and
Leclerc retired.
